I hope you feel better soon, Kim! Sports injuries are SO annoying!!!

I have a verra verra small sports injury at the moment -- jammed my finger on a medicine ball at boot camp class yesterday morning and it is all purple today. Very festive. Fortunately it's not too painful and I have almost full motion so I'm pretty sure nothing is broken.

Still keeping up with my exercise, though. A session with Trainer Dave AND tap class are on the agenda for this evening! Eating is not awesome but not awful. Weight still where it has been.

Well, I'm icing my foot as I read and type here, since my foot it acting up again, after two years of being good. Went to physio yesterday, and was told I have weak ankles and tight calves, all leading to plantars faciitis....Ugh. Should have kept up the stretching and strength work they gave me at physio two years ago I guess. Laziness finally caught up with me and it'll be a while to recover now.

So my fave, running, is out for now. Oh well, it's been too hot to be fun anyway and I'm not training for any races. (Do I sound convincing?? I LOVE running...sigh).

Dug out all my DVD's and will be doing a lot of strength and Jillian training to keep up. Thankfully, as Mo put it, I like a full body approach and can still stay fit, regardless of no running and no plyo moves. Just takes being a bit more creative.

So my plan is strength training for 45 minutes (full body) 3x next week and cardio on my recumbant bike (while watching The Big C series) 2 or 3 x next week.

My eating has been good and I'm working on not being so fixated on food and have stopped weighing myself everyday, so I will see how I've done tomorrow, at my once a week weigh in. Eventually I want to be able to throw the scale away, and I think that may be in my very near future.

Nice work to all of you ladies, keep it up!!

I did a pump class and a few minutes on a stair climber this morning.

On the downside I had a baking day and had way too much mixture to eat. However it is mostly for school lunches so will soon be cut up, wrapped and frozen and thus out of my reach!

Did my leg weights workout and a interval and hill session on the treadmill after.

Trying to work out when to do a pump class tomorrow. a 6am start would give me the whole day to catch up with things at home, which would be really helpful, and the 9am class is really crowded and it can be hard to get the right weights BUT waking up really early, for me (5:35am) does tend to make me very tired as it is so hard to go to bed early enough to get enough sleep. And I have already done it mon, tue and plan to do it on Thurs. A later start on wed could be helpful in getting me through the week.

Great news Sarah.

I was pretty good for exercise. I went for a run/walk on Sunday, did hot yoga on Wednesday, run/walk Thursday and Friday and I golfed on Sunday morning. I wore my HR monitor to run Thursday and Friday and realized that if I get my heart rate up high on the run/walk segments, it stays up in the 130+ range for the walk home. I have been running only 1.5-1.9 miles in short intervals but the HR is up in the 160-170 range. I run away from home and do a big loop walking back so cover about 5 miles in total.

My eating is still not very good but one thing at a time. I plan to run later today, yoga on Wednesday and hopefully I will run again on Thursday and Saturday.

The pump on the pool filter conked out on the weekend so I need to get that fixed.

I have a treadmill in the house but only use it if I am desperate. I find it much more interesting to run outside even though it is harder work. When it is too cold to run outside, I usually go and run on an indoor track. At least I can see people there. :)

I am also thinking I need to get my bike down from the hooks in the garage and try riding a few times to change things up.

I started off the week right -- woke up to a lovely 68 degrees this morning, so I went for a run. Just 3 miles, and it's definitely warming up (going to be 88 today), but it's a good start to the week!

I did one hour workout on Monday at the gym and a 2 mile run Wednesday. Then Saturday walked around throughout the day. However, I was a little bummed because even though I've upped my physical activity levels the past three weeks... I've still managed to gain 3 pounds!!! Grrr.... I think I need to put more focus on my eating. Oh well. Today is a new week. Good luck everyone with your week's health goals!

Makrame, I'm training for a half marathon too! It's my first ... yikes! I've been running 3 days a week (up from 0 days per week 6 weeks ago!). My goal this week is to still get the 3 runs in despite going on vacation Thursday till Monday! Weight has been holding steady which is good because I've not been eating too healthy (beer and cookies last night at the big family dinner).

Sarah, good to hear that your son is getting better!

Sarah, so glad to hear about your son.

Una - LOL. There have been days when I have had a beer, and told myself that it *does* have carbohydrates.

In spite of good -- no, great -- intentions, my workout schedule last week was the pits. I managed one good run and one really good weight training workout (I take an awesome class), but that was it. I only managed about 50% of my at least 4X week workouts. This week has been busy, and everything takes longer than I think it's going to. Bleah.

I'm traveling for work this week; I have brought my running gear and I am staying in a hotel with a gym, but I detest the treadmill and it might too hot for this spoiled Northern Californian to run. I did run in India and Africa this summer, though, in much warmer temps/ humidity, but I am hoping that I will not wimp out. I'll be eating restaurant meals and drinking wine, so that should be motivation.

Sarah, glad to hear about your son!

I have mysteriously lost 2 pounds. Not sure what could have caused this. I am training for a half marathon but normally that leads to a small weight gain. Perhaps the more intense training schedule this time (more mileage) is helping. I also made one small change in my eating - I have been reading some not-so-positive things about large amounts of dairy intake (possible effects on insulin resistance etc.) and decided that my old habit of eating 2-3 servings of homemade yogurt a day should probably be modified to reduce dairy to 1-2 servings per day. I cut out my afternoon snack of plain yogurt with berries and replaced it with a portion of unsalted nuts (walnuts, almonds etc.). Now I can't figure out whether it is the nuts or the miles that led to the weight loss. :)

I am also interested in trying to find a source of grass-fed milk for making yogurt and was surprised to find that it was not available at my favorite, chock-full-of organic foods supermarket. Need to see what they have at the health food store.

I was at a conference this week, which means 1) I got in a couple of great runs, and 2) I drank a crapload of beer with old friends. Oh well, the two activities seem to have offset one another, and I didn't gain much weight. But, now it's time to get on track in that department.

The great news is that my son who has had some sort of post-viral fatique for 2 1/2 months seems to finally be out of the woods. He's had an entire week of his old, energetic self and all the tests came back negative except for a low vitamin D. With that stress finally gone from my life, I can get my eating back on track!

I remember when I first moved to Oregon in '96 and had no gym nearby or affordable. My neighbor who was a windsurfer said the gym is in your backyard (The Columbia River). He was right, but it took me several years to come around. I haven't been a gym member in over a decade. To top it off, I vascillate between living in way too hot and way too snowy. As a runner, that's pretty limiting, but I don't own a treadmill. I especially realized when I couldn't walk after spraining an ankle that it's a whole body approach, not just hours in the gym.

Crazy work week for me, so wasn't able to go to the gym at all. But I did short 10 minute bits at home (crunches, running up and down the stairs, run around the house with the cat) most mornings. Eating well-ish; stayed at home to work 3 days, harder to eat well when in 5000% work mode. Lots of spinach and fish and tea, less beer. Overall I would guess this was more of a maintenance week than a loss week, which is fine with me.

(Una, I need to visit you pronto!! Do you like microbrews? If you end up coming to Seattle, I'm definitely going to make sure we have some homebrew on tap that I can share with you!)

As I reported last week my hike last week has played a number on my leg...

My food intake is turning out healthy, and my portions sizing is on track...

Thanks, Janet! I run outside, of course, but no chance of outdoor swimming. And the whole getting wet and changing in a locker room - bleah. I hate the treadmill too. Hiking is really the most fun for me. I wish I could get back to mountain biking but that is really a sport where you can't just go out and have fun unless you're in shape for it already; otherwise it's just suffering.

I'm actually more comfortable swimming than running. It does get repetitive to swim laps, but I try to just change up strokes when it gets boring. Plus, I'm outdoors and get to enjoy the trees and plants and birds in our backyard. Oh, and one of my pugs likes to run from one end of the pool to the other to greet me as I reach that end -- so she gets her exercise too!

I hate the treadmill. That's part of why I'm swimming so much these days. I just don't do well running in this heat and humidity, and the gym really isn't much cooler AND it's boring to run on the treadmill. I'd much rather be out where I can experience the outdoors while I run.

Yes, the four food groups in my house are smoothies, alcohol, bacon and chocolate.

*makes mental note to run extra miles*

XOXO back at you, Janet - it was fun to "party" with you last night!

A question for the swimmers: do you find it boring to swim laps? I run with the dog and music, but otherwise any repetitive exercise is hard for me. I much prefer to hike or rock climb or ski, rather than lifting weights or run on a treadmill. But I feel like swimming would be better for my joints.

I went to my circuit class at the gym on Tuesday (after a multi-week absence) and ran 3 miles on Friday. I should go run today too but am feeling lazy. I suppose this is where the accountability comes in - if I don't run today, you will all know it. ;-)

Update: I ran this morning. 3 miles. Now when do I get to start seeing the difference?

Una, have I told you lately I love you?

A spinach smoothie and beer. Hey, I won't knock it until I try it.

Janet, of course it does! And it negates the wine. I had a spinach smoothie and a beer (or two) for dinner. *eyeroll*

Um, I'm eating salad right now, so maybe that counts for something?

I upped my swimming this week -- still every other day, but now I'm doing 80 laps (our pool is not olympic-sized, obvs!) which is about 40 minutes. No breaks of anything more than a few seconds.

Food wise, I've been better. I had a chicken cheesesteak yesterday; hence, the salad today.

I'm in! I've done a fairly good job of eating healthy (mostly I just need to cut out sugar), and I've gone for three good runs with the dog, as well as a hike. Something about running again motivates me to eat better. I'm not so much weighing in as looking at size and shape overall... at least for now.

Thanks for starting the thread!

I missed a couple of workouts this week. I had to take Hubby to the ER on Thursday so I missed tap class (he's fine), and we were there until 3 a.m. I did do my trainer session on Friday but I was wiped out and slept through boot camp on Saturday.

Wine is my downfall, too, but I am getting a reprieve since Hubby can't drink while he is on his meds for a week or so and I don't like to drink alone! ;)

Eating has not been stellar. I have been holding steady at a pound or two below the emergency zone but 2-3 pounds above where I'd like to be.

CGDC, I'm glad you bought that bag -- it's great!

I do my weigh ins on Monday so we'll see. I did little to no exercise (unless you count using the stairs at work more than usual) but ate pretty well. More salads for dinner and a LOT less candy this week. I am organizing all my workout dvds in a place that I can use easily so no excuses. It's also near the treadmill - now I just have to make time for it. Easy right?
Congrats on your losses and habits.

Warm weather keeps me indoors also. I love to run but it's been so hot so i get on the dreaded treadmill. Luckily, our treadmills at work have tv screens and I usually have good running music on.

Wine is my downfall. I try to stick with an occasional glass of wine once or twice a week but sometimes I indulge. I've been drinking more beer this summer too but usually when I go out and never at home.

Good luck to all.
