The only one I saw was Get Out. As my BFF put it - it wasn’t as good as it should have been. I think part of that has to do with the marketing. I was expecting sharper wit not an actual ‘Scary Movie’ type scary movie.

My mum invited me to see Three Billboards Sunday. Actually, what she said was ‘do you want to see...?’ And I said no. So I didn’t see it. She came back shaking her head.

I feel like a lot of movies are trying too hard to be deep or they’re pure fluff these days.

The only movies I’d be willing to see in a theatre are Dunkirk and Coco.

My BFF loved Call Me tho. Said it actually wasn’t cliche. Said he’d send me money to see it, lol. I’m still not really interested. I think the big topic of the day should be Impotent Apathy. That’s where the music is certainly... anybody see Bjork’s new video? About texting romance? Appalling and apropos...

I haven't seen any of the Oscar nominations this year. I've seen very few movies recently. We've gotten out of the habit of going to the movies (hard with 3 kids) but we haven't even watched any at home. I'm determined to watch more movies this year and we've watched a movie every weekend in January so far. Dunkirk is on my list to see.

I took the kids to see Coco and we all loved it. My 4-year old is terrified of movies (it's surprising how scary even most animated movies are when you really think about them) but we watched the trailers for Coco before we went and talked about it (he was scared of the skeletons) and he was able to get through it without problems.

Fran = No brainer for best lead ' I got the job done without being molested by Harvey ' creepy bastard for all time ' Weinstein. "

Gazza should get a well deserved golden phallic nod for playing WW2's most awesome 70+ year old fart.

The West Wing's Ally Janning for best " holding the rest of you lazy bludgers " up.

I remember that you didn't like Manchester. I can 'do' sad, but absolutely cannot do violent, that's why I stay away from many shows that are too gritty, or war movies (might have to gather my courage though and go see Dunkirk upon your enthusiasm).
It is fascinating to me as well. We all bring our baggage along and it merges with a movie or book and produces very different reactions, isn't it? Just yesterday we discussed recently seen movies during a gathering and a friend (45 y. old male) said that he sobbed through half of Call Me by Your Name. It obviously struck such a strong and emotional cord with him. I also know that I can have quite a different reaction to a film from one day to another, depending on my emotional state.

chouette22, thanks so much for your opinions. I ate them up, and savoured every word. It's fascinating to me. I enjoy gritty TV shows more than movies, but it's been a very good year for movies. LOVING all the strong female roles.

Casey Affleck is a very talented actor - (one of the best if we for a moment ignore the very disappointing allegations against him) - but I didn't love Manchester By The Sea. Extremely sad, and thought Michelle Williams was not up to par. My 10/10 movie for that year was Sing Crazy. And the year before that, Whiplash.

I'm with you on Get Out at 7/10. VERY happy it's nominated, and it was very clever - but it didn't grab me as much as other movies. Mollys Game was better - 8/10.

Mockumentary - brilliant word.

Dunkirk 20/10 :)

Darkest Hour: 10/10.

Kind of want to skip The Shape of Water too.....but am very curious about Three Billboards. Keep you posted.

I LOVE going to the cinema! I give a film my
fullest, undevided attention there and I enjoy the social setting.

Just as a reference, Manchester by the Sea was a 10/10 film
for me last year.

This is my take on the Oscar-nominated films so far:
Three Billboards – I really enjoyed this dark comedic drama. Loved the acting! 8/10

Get out – I usually avoid horror movies, but my family dragged me to this one and I could handle and even liked it. Unexpected. Excellent acting. 7/10

I, Tonya – This very well-known story (by some of us) is
told from a mockumentary perspective which is interesting and wants you guessing what the truth actually is. 7/10

Ladybird: I had very high expectations and was ever so slightly disappointed. I was hoping for emotional resonance and that didn’t happen, but I still really liked it. 7/10

Call Me By Your Name – Languid, long, sunny summer days with nothing much to do, which reminded me of my childhood. A love story. Tri-lingual. A very accepting, incredibly respectful child-parent relationship. Beautiful! 7/10

-Dunkirk: I usually don’t watch war movies and will very likely not see this one. Happy to hear how much you love it!
-Darkest Hour: I will see it soon.
-The Shape of Water: I friend, whose opinion I value, didn’t like it at all back in December when she saw it and I thought I’d probably skip it. Now with all these nominations I will give it a chance and am very curious to see my reaction. I didn’t understand the number of nominations for La La Land last year, and I wonder about this one.
-Molly’s Game: Want to see.
-Phantom Thread: Cannot wait to see this film and my expectations are very high! I’ll report back.
-The Post: I will probably catch that on DVD at some later point after hearing your take on it.

Robin F, I thoroughly enjoyed your opinions. YES. The Post could have been sooooo much more dramatic because it's and excellent story -(and has Meryl). It was just okay, I thought.

Good to hear you liked Three Billboards....it's going to be VERY interesting, and I can't wait to report back. Glad Daniel DL gets your love....

I, Tonya sounds really unique, and I remember the story sooo well back in 1983. Funny, sad, and horrible.

Lots of love for Get Out on this thread. I did think it was good and interesting, but it's not a fave. Glad to see a it get recognition though.

I have only seen a few of these but hope to see a few more before the awards, makes them more fun to watch.

I liked "Three Billboards", thought it was engrossing and very well acted but, yes quite violent.

I liked "The Post" too but it was a little more low-key than I expected. I'm a Meryl Streep fan and like almost everything she does, she is so believable. But truthfully I hope someone else wins this year (I guess I am assuming she is up for best actress?), I usually prefer an underdog :)

I loved "I, Tonya" just a fun, sad yet funny movie. I remember the actual events like they were just a few years ago! Allison Janney as the mom was great as was Margot Robbie as Tonya.

I'm a big Daniel Day-Lewis fan (Last of the Mohicans is one of my all time favorites) but haven't seen that yet and not sure I will, they seem to be pushing it with the commercials. Also not really a fan of war movies but maybe I'll have to try for "Dunkirk" or "Darkest Hour". I'd like to see "Lady Bird" and maybe "The Shape of Water".

Oh yeah, loved "Get Out", it was so original and such an interesting statement on race

(also quite violent). It would be fun to see them win some awards.

Sal, I saw that movie on the plane. Rachel was quite the baddie.

Viv, I loved reading your thoughts. Thanks for sharing. I don't feel like seeing The Shape of Water, but might force myself to. The Post was such a good true story - but I didn't think the execution of the movie was compelling. I enjoyed seeing Get Out get nominated too. Unique. What did you think of Three Billboards?

ClaraT, I could have written your review of The Shape of Water! I enjoyed it for the same reasons you did (plus, I just loved the escape from reality it provided) - and also saw the limitations you did (plus, some credibility gaps in the plot, leaving aside the whole sea monster thing). Ultimately, a great night at the movies for me, but probably not a best picture.

I thought Get Out was incredibly smart, surprising, and well acted. It had great dimension. I really hope it wins a slew of awards.

I'd like to see Willem DaFoe win supporting actor for The Florida Project, which was by far the most difficult film to watch that I saw this year. Truly provocative and arresting film about poverty in America. DaFoe was the calm center at the heart of the story. (I think, I hope he was nominated?)

I really enjoyed Ladybird (though some difficult scenes), Dunkirk, and the Post. I have always been interested in the career of Katharine Graham and I loved learning about how she rose to such a position of power in print media. Also, I am not a Tom Hanks fan but I really kind of liked him here.

Thanks, Isabel. My film critic client in Mexico City loved Three Billboards - she has a soft spot for Frances McDormand. The jury is out for sure. I like Sam Rockwell A LOT, but suspect I won't like the movie either...

Three Billboards was a huge disappointment and there were some completely noncredible story lines. Frances McDormand was great but Sam Rockwell gave the winning performance by far.

I feel a bit out of the loop this year with films - I have not seen ANY of the nominees which is a little unusual for me. It is hard during summer to get there and many of them are only just out.

I am trying to think back to what films I did see in 2017 at the cinema

Thor Ragnorak
The Greatest Showman
The Battle of the Sexes
Lego Batman
Viceroys House
Victoria and Abdul

Not my best year and I didn't even get to the International Film Festival sadly.

I want to see The Darkest Hour and I, Tonya and hope to get there this month.

Clara T, I hear you - no pun intended. Good thing there wasn't a lot of dialogue in that movie. Although the sounds of battle go right through your soul, don't you think? I felt the same about Darkest Hour - Kirsten Scott Thomas offered some welcome comic relief. Can you even imagine the pressure and stress people like Winston Churchill were under??? The nurses on the battleships of Dunkirk. Making a decision about which wounded people to save - (save seven standing soldiers or one wounded soldier on a stretcher). The selflessness of the civilian boats crossing the channel to rescue the troops. The sacrifice of 4000 men at Calais. Horrific, devastating and sobering. I have shivers up my spine writing this to you.

Greg has already seen Dunkirk twice. I will see it again soon - and Bladerunner 2049 for that matter.

I can see how one could feel about Dunkirk the way you feel, Angie--it is exactly how I expected to feel! Sometimes other factors affect how one percieves a movie (it was really loud, for example, when I saw it), so I appreciate your perspective!

Clara T, I thoroughly enjoyed your opinions. Very interesting, eloquent, and passionate. Thanks for sharing. I gobbled them up!

Fascinating to me that I felt quite the opposite about Dunkirk - it was extremely emotional, (also know the story well - both parents lived through WW2 quite hectically). I thought the characters were unbelievably good, especially since they hardly spoke. The timeline was unique. The cinematography and editing was incredible. The honour and horror of the historical event was captured perfectly - right up to the end - (but no spoilers from me). And the story complements Darkest Hour beautifully. It was SUBLIME. I haven't seen as good a movie for a very long time. Christopher Nolan is a genius.

I'll keep you posted on my thoughts on the other movies.

I'm not interested in seeing Phantom Thread for now - not a fan of Daniel Day Lewis. But maybe at some point.

My thoughts:
I was medium on Dunkirk--the characters didn't grab me. I'm usually an emotional mess at the movies, but I did not get caught up in this one bit. Maybe because I'm so familiar with the story? I'm not sure. The response to the death of the one character (trying not to have a spoiler) was too subdued to be realistic in my mind. That said, the special effects were great and I"m glad I saw it AND Darkest Hour as they were *very* complementary (plus I'm watching the first season of The Crown). Yay British history. Dunkirk is an amazing story to be sure.
Ladybird: Poignant. As a woman, it brought me back to those fraught teenage years. Gave me a heartache but made me smile, too.
Three Billboards: Amazing acting. Disturbing and violent in ways that I did not anticipate. Frances McDormand is magnificent. Did I mention that it's violent? It's violent. Be forewarned.
The Post: Meh. Well done, but if you've seen the preview, you've seen the movie. And I love Streep and Hanks--maybe my expectations were too high. I recommend it, but nothing in this movie surprised me.
Get Out: Very important movie in my mind in terms of insights into race relations from (for once) an AA point of view. Funny/not funny at all...
The Shape of Water: Very whimsical, characters were *not* subtle (the monster with a good heart, the evil scientist, the worker who follows his conscience, the AA worker who is jolly and strong, the woman with a disability who is underestimated, etc.) I enjoyed it, but it's not everyone's cup of tea to be sure and is very heavy handed character and plot-wise. I loved the fantasy aspect and can appreciate a good vs. evil movie. Loved the ending, too.
Haven't seen the others (but plan to!)
Love this thread, Angie--it is always interesting to see what others notice about movies--sometimes others' insights change my perspective.

Lisa p, you're not the only one who failed to see the buzz of Three Billboards. My documentary director and producer friend - (who has won Emmys for her work) - felt the same way, and did not like the movie. She said I probably won't either. She also loved Dunkirk and Darkest Hour - but her favourite movie was Call Me By Your Name.

All sooo interesting. There is no right and wrong - just LOTS of opinions and often opposing ones. It's fascinating to me. Greg and I both want Dunkirk to win everything.

I"ve only seen Dunkirk and Three Billboards. I enjoyed Dunkirk, but fail to see what all the buzz is about Three Billboards. Even Frances McDormand's acting seemed one-note to me. I'm a harsh critic, yes

JAileen, I heard Michelle Williams was excellent. I adore Christopher Plummer. Saw Get Out. It was quite good. Nice to see a horror movie nominated.

I had high hopes for The Post. It was just okay, I thought.

Molly's Game not really in the nominations - (only one nomination) - but it was great.

Lots of mixed feelings about Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - which is why I want to see it.

I, Tonya was my generation and I remember the story well - so I want to see it.

Ladybird looks like a sweet coming of age movie.

Coco I want to see because animations are usually brilliant.

The Shape of Water - I want to see because of all the hype, although the subject matter does not grab me.

Not sure if I want to see Call Me By Your Name.

I saw All the Money in the World. I thought it was very good, and it’s amazing to think Christopher Plummer stepped in at the end. He was tremendous. I also thought Michelle Williams was excellent.

I loved Get Out. I watched it on an airplane. It was riveting!

I love watching the Academy Awards, although I much prefer TV shows to movies. That said, it was a year of better movies.

Here are the nominations:

https://www.vox.com/2018/1/23/.....ominations

VERY pleased that Dunkirk got 8 nominations - I want them to win EVERYTHING. Best movie of the year by far in my book. Absolutely bone chilling, sobering and magnificently executed right till the last scene. It was mind blowing.

VERY pleased that Gary Oldham is up for Best Actor in Darkest Hour - He was SUBLIME, and that's not giving him enough credit.

VERY pleased that 88 year old Christopher Plummer is nominated. WOW. How brilliant - have a soft spot for him.

VERY pleased Darkest Hour is up for Best Makeup - very impressive. Gary Oldham is unrecognizable as Winston Churchill. I believe it took 4 hours every morning. He had to get up at 2.30am to be ready to shoot the movie in regular hours.

VERY pleased that Blade Runner 2049 is up for Production Design, Visual Effects, Sound Mixing, and Cinematography. I vote the most visually beautiful movie of the year.

Fun to see War of The Planet of the Apes get nominated. It was a good movie, and deserves recognition.

Movies I still want to see:

Three Billboards, Outside Ebbing, Missouri

The Shape of Water

Ladybird

I, Tonya

All The Money in the World

Coco

All thoughts welcome, and all in good fun. xo
