And thanks to everyone with comments about my outfit! I'm pretty sure I won't keep the skirt. It takes too much thought to get an outfit together. What wasn't shown is that beneath the belt, it has a big elastic band waistband, same width as the belt.

I ended up changing into jeans for evening errands because it was cool out, and I kept the shirt untucked and loved it! It's funny, because I bought a Gibson blazer the same day as that red shirt, and I've worn the jacket to death, sometimes more than once a week. I have to challenge myself to NOT wear it, LOL. Yet the shirt only made its first outing yesterday thanks to this challenge!

Goldenpig, I really like your look! (And I love the baby gym that's in your outfit shots now. ) I wonder if it would work better with a fitted tee? And this doesn't help, but a smaller size might work better, too. What I see in the bomber-over-full-skirt formula is the banded edge ending just above or right at the hips, and it looks a little lower on you.

Regardless, I would try again because it looks like such a fun jacket!!

Will pop back but my first responses are for Firecracker....that tunic is fabulous! How about layering over it not under? I would wear this over skinny jeans and booties with a drapey long cardigan over the tunic;).

And K, your style has truly transcended the tweed skirt. I think you can happily send it off to a new home.

Cooking dinner, but will be back. Great thread Karie:)

Goldenpig: I think the bomber looks great with the skirt. My one thought is that you might wear a little heel to dress up the look more deliberately, if the bomber made you feel a little casual for work. I think your jewelry choices were excellent for dressing up the outfit. Also, with the tucked shirt, you kept the look shapely and feminine, too--far from your fear of dumpy.

La Belle: The jacket is beautiful on you. Yes, you do look like a million bucks--at least! I had the same thought, you could try wearing it with jeans sometimes (for a date or to go shopping, maybe) instead of saving it for super special occasions.

Mona: I like how you've styled the necklace. It's perfect with that top and sweater, and love the white jeans with the blues. However, I wonder if it's the length and style that make it hard to wear. I don't wear my necklaces that length, either, unless I can double them and wear them shorter. Is that the case for you?

Shedev: I have those oxfords in brown! I like them as styled with those jeans. I wear mine like that, with my boot cut jeans that have shrunk too much to wear with heels anymore. And I love wearing them with skinnies, so you might try that, too. I like the top on you as well, and I think you could wear it under jackets or by itself, with jeans or black trousers.

Pastrygirl: Love the first outfit on you! But if it's not comfortable, it doesn't pass my personal test for wearing. I just don't get out the door in uncomfortable clothes. Your last outfit is a keeper, too, especially if you felt more like yourself in it.

Karie: hooray for animal print as a neutral! And the jacket is fab on you. Agree the blue skirt is fun for casual wear.

Joy: I like the checked shirt best with the two jackets. Just dynamite! I LOVE your use of it for pattern-mixing. To me it seems a little preppy with the citron jeans, and it's very cute that way, but I wonder if that's the style you're going for. Personally I'm attracted to your eclecticizing of it! (But you might guess that, coming from me, huh?)

K, you are looking so, so fab in the third outfit! What a contrast. Yes, unfortunately, the lace and tweed is just not the right fit or shape to achieve the same level of fabness.

Elle, I think your look is perfectly boho. If the hat doesn't work for summer when you like to be more boho, then you might need to swap it for a lighter version. I'd hang on to the jeans; I've been seeing some boyfriend-style boot cuts, and these might work that way--unless you need some slouchy cutoffs sooner!

Thanks to all who gave me feedback on the tunic. I'm glad it's working (more or less) with the skirt I have. A pinafore look I don't really want, but a skirt in the same color is probably not going to fall into my life. (Even fabric options aren't that ideal, alas.) K, I really appreciate the link--that gives me a great image to try to copy.

Natalie, I have a different black/grey lace bomber. You might start by pairing yours with denim or black jeans, skirt or clams with a neutral top. Don't you have polka dots? Try it with dots. Will it work with your Kate Spade oriental print?

Here's my first outfit for Karie's Orphans to Outfits challenge. I was
rushing out the door to work so I did not have time to sit and think
about this outfit. I bought the lace bomber that Angie has and wore so
well in this outfit,
and this is sort of a copy of her outfit with the lace bomber over a
full skirt. But for some reason I am just not feeling like this outfit
is "me". I'm finding this lace bomber so hard to style with my other
tops and dresses, because most of them are patterned themselves and kind
of clash with the lace pattern. Plus the silhouette of the bomber with
its lack of waist definition makes me feel a bit frumpy. Help, please
analyze what went wrong with this outfit, and I'd love suggestions on
how to wear this bomber because it still feels like an orphan to me. I
only wore the jacket for a few minutes to go to work and then took it
off inside (basically wore #2), because I wasn't sure if it looked
professional enough (plus it was hot today).
Thanks for your comments and suggestions!
Lace bomber
WHBM white blouse and blue pleated skirt
Born silver flats
The Sak black purse
Pewter bracelet and pearls

Very insightful comments (as always!) Suz. I don't know if the beige jacket fits my developing style persona, that's something that I plan on taking the time this summer and figuring out. I think I need to write my "style persona" out - adjectives, descriptors, etc. At least for now, the jacket works because I need it for these still cool spring days. I do like the color and the 3/4 sleeves. I have plans for future jacket purchases though - and they include popping over the border this summer to Kingston, ON to find a Danier store! White leather jacket, I'm talking about YOU!

Shedev, you look good in the VC top! Hope you will wear it more often. And the oxfords are great, too.

Firecracker, I have a Simpli tunic that is more or less an orphan, too. Mine is very similar to yours except it has sleeves! And that doesn't seem to make it easier to style. Hmmm. I love what you have done here, though!

Karie, that jacket definitely works. But I wonder if it fits your developing style persona?

Joy, I like the checked shirt in all its incarnations, maybe especially with the full watercolour skirt and raspberry jacket -- that is a very fun outfit. You pattern mix with the very best!

Pastrygirl, I actually love the shirt tucked into the skirt, but maybe it feels too bombshell for everyday wear? It looks good either way.

Elle, I like the jeans! Agree that you may use the top throughout the summer. It does seem more boho than your usual style now, but it would work for outdoor music.

Just popping on to say I've loved everyone's outfits today. LBD - glad you found a way to wear that glamorous jacket. You would dress it down even more with jeans.

Mona - love the necklace on you and think with its colours you might wear it more in spring/ summer. Really like it with the blues today.

K - isn't that sad about the tweed skirt? But yes, it no longer fits. I had that issue when I lost weight too - styles that once worked, no longer did. Even in the right size, in some cases.

Firecracker, I can sew like you in my dreams only - I really like the tunic paired with the skirt that you made.

Elle, I'd like to see a pic of the blouse with shorts, before the final "pass along" vote. I think it looks dated, not current boho, with the jeans. I vote pass on the hat.

Pastry, I'm going against the grain here and saying I like your shirt better belted over the skirt, rather than tucked in. I also love the necklace.

Shedev, great oxfords, great shirt. What is it about them you don't like? I like them a lot, and the jeans with buttons are fab.

K, I think the skirt in #1 and #2 looks a little big to me. I would either alter it or pass it along. The skirt in #3 looks perfect!

I know what you mean about the necklace, Diana - I have several orphans in that area. I like it and think it looks great the way you're wearing it. It looks great with that T shirt, so I'd keep it for at least another season.

Thanks, everyone for your help with responses! My work schedule is crazy this week as it is nearing the end of the school year (I should actually be doing work right now but this is way more fun) but I'll try and check in as often as I can.

Mona, I love the necklace on you and I love how you paired it. I would keep it. However, I should disclose that I have the hardest time passing on jewelry. I keep it in a second jewelry box, waiting for it to come back into style. I'm not sure that is the best idea. I have a young daughter, though, so I figure it is cheaper to keep it now than to get rid of it and have to buy more later. ;)

Elle, thanks!
Karie, I love the jacket. I wouldn't worry that you can't zip it up. A jacket is like a cardigan or any other topper, not every one has to fully close. I have at least one cardigan that was super flattering in a size that was to small to button fully, but otherwise fit. I have worn the heck out of it. As for the skirts, I love the red. The blue seems a bit short for work, but it really depends on what your work is and what you do physically at work. It wouldn't fly in my law office, but it could be perfect in a more casual workplace.

Joy, I love the check skirt and I love it with everything but the geometric print skirt. That seems like the scale is too small and the pattern too similar for the pattern mixing to work. I'm surprised that you think the color is too springy. I really like it, and I think that your light hair and glasses make it a very flattering hue. I have something similar that I wore all last year with white jeans, white shirts, and denim and I loved it. It is high on my list for this year too.

Firecracker, the tunic looks great on you. Have you considered wearing it with slim black pants? Beverly Like Hills wore something similar here: http://www.beverlylikehills.co.....ot-on.html She paired it with slim, ankle length trousers and I think something similar would look great for you. I can imagine that working a layer underneath the tunic would be challenging and layering over it as well. I do like to layer, but I think you pretty much have it with your current layer. A slim cut tee with elbow length sleeves or as short as you feel comfortable with works beautifully. The tiered layers make layering the typical button downs under or jacket/sweater toppers over hard. I would be a little stumped like you.

Elle, I see that whole outfit as having a lovely '60s boho vibe to it. I know what you mean about the top. I have a similar one that I really love the pattern on and it is lovely silk. However, I'm tired of the empire waist, so I am passing mine along. It looks good with a pencil skirt, if that look appeals to you, and I could see it with a fuller, looser midi skirt. However, both of those read pretty boho. I love the hat--I have one like that and go for the full on '60s or '70 look with it, complete with big sunglasses. It looks great with a maxi dress, if you wear those. Finally, the jeans. I really like them on you. Cutoffs are definitely an option if you think you'll get lots of wear out of them. They would make it easier to take the jeans from boho to rock and roll and back again.

Pastrygirl, I love the top, necklace and belt. It is hard to get used to the volume of woven shirts tucked in, but with a fitted bottom to anchor them (or a fitted waist on a non-fitted bottom, they really work very well. I've taken to pulling the excess volume toward my back to make them fit more flatteringly. I don't try to tuck in evenly all around (i.e., side seams lined up on the side). That makes the transition into tucking and volume work better for me. Maybe give that a try. As for the skirt, it is not so much with me. I think that tiers and animal prints is a lot going on. Too much for me. I would probably pass it along. You have a great slightly '50s retro look and it seems too boho to me.

And then there is my orphan. *SIGH* Loved this skirt. It's tweed! It has lace! And then I tried to pair it with something and no luck. It works well with a black turtleneck or scoopneck or drapeneck and seemingly nothing else. I tried it today with what I hoped would work as a similar neutral--my denim skirt--and booties to kick it up a bit. Not so much. Then with my leopard wedges. Again, not so much. I've lost weight and it is now too big to flare out, so it just hangs there limply, looking sad. I think it is begging to be passed along to a forever home, and I've decided it is time for it to start its journey.

Pic 1 and 2, the orphan. Pic 3, what I really wore today, which is a current favorite and not an orphan at all. The contrast between its fabulousness and the tweed and lace skirt's not-fabulousness sure highlights that tweed and lace needs a different home.

K.

I haven't read the other comments yet:

Karie, I love the jacket on you, particularly with your red skirt. Fab sandals, too!

Joy, I think the shirt is a keeper. It is a fresh color, and I think you've styled it really well!

Firecracker, it definitely works! Beautiful tunic and great layering. I think it would work well over skinny pants, too.

Elle, I think the jeans are super. Definitely keep! The hat and top are cute, but if you don't feel the style anymore, it might be time to let them go.

Pastrygirl, I think your shirt and skirt are fab, both of them. The belt ties the outfit nicely together. I prefer the belted look, to me it seems more on trend, but both are nice. Maybe you could tuck and use a narrower belt?

Shedev, I like both the top and the oxfords. I think you have styled them really well, but how does the top look without the vest? I love the buttons on the jeans' leg!

I wore my red skinnies today, they haven't seen much light in a while. No photos, sorry!

Pastrygirl. Keep the blouse. I prefer it tucked, you might get used to the blousing it has when tucked. You do not look wide in the skirt at all. The silouhette on you is gorgeous, but, I think the print & the tiers are too much. One or the other would be better. I don't know enough about jewelry to comment on that. The wide belt is fab too. I don't love the untucked version as much.

I bought the blouse less than a year ago after being told on YLF that a tee with shorts was too casual, too teenage. I wonder if I should keep the top for shorts. I wonder if I haven't worn it because it hasn't been shorts weather. It got the keep vote on YLF when I bought it but maybe that was because I was new & my style was more boho as it was Summer & nobody on here knew much about my style. I could perhaps keep it for shorts & work outfits where tees are not appropriate? But...I could also find more modern woven tops for shorts & work right?

Here's a 3-fer!

Light red (pinkish hue) button-up shirt. Fit OK when I bought it, gained weight so never wore it. Lost weight, so I'm trying again. As much as I think I *love* button-up shirts, I have trouble reconciling the stiff wrinkly/foldy look at the waist when tucked in. I just got this orange necklace and I think it might help me wear this shirt more.

Stretchy wide belt. Again, the weight thing, but I used to wear it more so I probably will wear it a bunch going forward.

Skirt. Fit when I bought it, but rode up a lot because of my shape. Now that I've slimmed down a little, it's not riding up, but I'm not sure if it's too IN YOUR FACE for me.

Admission: I changed the skirt and belt because I didn't feel like me. But, I tried to take a pic with the alternative skirt/belt (more casual) and the photos look terrible! I can't decide if I should trust the photos and wear the animal print, or trust my eyes and comfort and wear this other skirt. It really looks BAD in the photos, though. I look a mile wide.

ETA: I was uncomfortable with the other skirt, so I changed back to the animal print but belted over the shirt this time. Much more comfortable with this look!

Karie - keep the jacket!

Joy, the shirt is a keeper too -- I like how you have changed the mood of it depending on the colour you pair it with.

Firecracker -- I agree with Rachy, an underskirt in the same colour would look great. What does it look like over skinny jeans instead of leggings?

Elle -- I think the top and hat look dated. I totally see the boho look in them, but you seem to be more rocker lately than boho. I do like the jeans on you a lot.
Karie - the jacket is a definite keeper. Crisp and modern, I think it will kick every outfit it's in up a notch.

Joy - I love the ginham shirt and think you should keep it. I do think, tho, you should keep it away from the last two skirts. I think the bottoms you pair the shirt with do better with stiffer, heavier materials.

Firecracker - I think an underskirt of the same colour would flatter the tunic more, be more sophisticated. With a contrasting underlayer, the tunic reads like a little-girl pinafore to me.

Elle - I vote yay on the jeans and nay on the hat and top. The hat brim is a bit droopy to me. The baby-doll waistline of the top too out of fashion.

Elle, your outfit took me straight back to the late 60's/early 70's chic...In a good way. I stay away from boot cuts for the same reason's you mention and don't understand BF jeans or shorts enough to comment on that.
You look great in the hat but it sounds like you need winter hats more. It sounds like it's making you work too hard. The top is cute on you, but if that's not how you want to present yourself, it may be time to let it go or wear on weekends.

So my outfit today has several orphans. I have so many orphans I am going to combine some this week.

First orphan jeans - I don't go to my bootlegs because as my weight fluctuates pant length is always changing & also I had them hemmed for flats & don't like bootlegs or flares with flats. Because I lost weight these have slipped into BF bootlegs. Is that a good look? It has enabled me to wear them with a low heel, which I prefer. Should I cut into BF shorts? Are they loose enough for BF shorts?

2nd orphan hat - I rarely wear hats because when I do it makes my head warmer & if I get too warm I get a headache. It shouldn't stop me wearing them in the Winter though so I need to come up with Winter looks for the hat. I think because in the Winter I dress less boho & I associate the hat with boho I don't wear it. I have decided that I can juxtapose it with less boho pieces to get more wear in the Winter.

3rd orphan top - The top I never seem to wear anymore. I do like it but I'm wondering if it just doesn't suit my style anymore. Is it too sweet? Is it dated?

Karie keep the jacket, you don't need to zip it. The skirt might be too short for work but I saw an air stewardess in one shorter the other day. She wore dark hose though.

Joy I like the shirt & I think you can wear it on cooler spring days if it is too hot for high Summer. I love the first 5 outfits. I'm not loving it tucked into the last 2 full skirts but I can't say why.

Firecracker I love the tunic & how you've styled it. I don't know much about jewelry but it looks fine. You could also wear the tunic over skinnieor straight jeans much like you do with leggings but it will be a slightly different look.

Joy, I started that thread yesterday to remind everyone. I think what I really did was confuse everyone! I'm new to this challenge thing - I've only ever posted to an existing one, never started one myself! That said, it doesn't really matter where people post - here, there, everywhere, separately - it's all goodie :)

Joy, I really like your shirt and the ways you've styled it. With pants, my favorites are #2 and #3 - I like the faux tuck on you. If you wear it out like in #1, have you tried belting it? That might work with both skirts and pants. I like it with the skirts in numbers 4 through 7 - you certainly have an impressive collection of jackets! Since the check appears to be small, I think it works well with the larger print in your geometric skirt. I'm not crazy about it with the skirt in #8 and #9, but I'd like to hear what others have to say.

I think two orphans have been saved today - yay!

Sorry to post and run, but I'll be back later tonight. . .
Here's my orphan outfit:
Red tunic (Sympli)
Black knit skirt (made by me)
Black lace tee (made by me)
Black sling-back Mary Janes (Think!)
Mah-jhong bracelet (gift)
The tunic is the main orphan here. I like it but don't wear it much, perhaps because it's sleeveless and I have to figure out how to layer it to wear it. So I tried layering a top under it this time. Also, I have worn it with leggings in the past, but I am a little over that look. So I made the skirt to wear with it and didn't really like them together, then tried it again today and wondered why I didn't like the combo before! I think it works. The bracelet is also an orphan--never worn before. It's a hard piece for me to style, and it's very, very chunky, a little awkward to wear.
