That jacket is terrific fit - I love the slight angle at bottom of it as it keeps the line modern. Great over one of your ts and with white jeans. Could it work with the black dress for a emergency dress up occasion? Sport it up with a scarf too.
Search pinterest for black blazer - there are lots of pics

Thanks so much again for the great ideas! Angie, I'm glad you like the jacket. I really think my style is so casual that I have just had trouble incorporating it. Thanks everyone for such great idea on how to still make it MY style.

the fit is great Meredith. I have two black blazers and wear them all the time. Last night I wore red jeans, black and white polka dot shirt and one of the black jackets. The colored jeans dress down the jacket and the jacket raises up the jeans.

I also put the jacket over a simple dress or skirt outfit. I find there is little more versatile than a black or navy classic blazer.

It's a fantastic little jacket, and fits you to a T. But I think, due to its classic cut, to wear it with jeans is very Preppy compared to your general cute, stylish and breezy style. That may be why it ended up being an orphan so far.

I think it needs a smart, classic and black or print bottom. Bring the jacket with you when you shop to match the fabric and shade. This could be part of a more formal wardrobe for you. You could also go for a skirt.

PS If worn casual I MUCH prefer the tee shirt collar underneath. However if worn as a suit with a more formal same colour bottom, you would have more options.

This looks a lot like my black boyfriend blazer! I find with mine (and it was a bit of an orphan last year) I just need to make sure I add some color near my face as the structure and the black can be a little harsh. Otherwise I expectimg to wear it a lot Tnis winter, over skinny jeans, leggings and dresses and pencil skirts. It's a ver versatile and useful piece. I think once you get used to it you will love it

It's a perfect fit and looks great on you! I think Denise has it right --- it's only a matter of figuring out how to fit it into your current style without feeling like you raided someone else's closet!

Of course the classic outfit would be over the sheath dress --- not sure if it's the right length, though? (How does one determine correct length for toppers, btw? Is there a formula somewhere?)

But I also like how pushing up the sleeves and letting the shirt cuffs show 'sportifies' it instantly --- you look like a model in a catalogue! Feel free to add a scarf, I think, to show you aren't taking that jacket at all too seriously!

It's great - a classic blazer! You can wear this with so much. My main trouble with jackets is I don't want to dry clean so I only purchase cotton, knits, etc. If you have to dry clean, then I know it can be harder to justify wearing something unless it's cold outside and you know you won't perspire in it. Dry cleaning chemicals are so toxic. I wonder if that is partly what keeps you from wearing it? It makes a difference to me. I've tried to "weed out" all my dry clean stuff but there are a couple of orphan hold outs. Mostly jackets of course!

Anyway, I've sidetracked - the jacket looks really great on you.

This totallly works! Bunching up the sleeves and folding the sleeve of your striped top back over the jacket gives it a fun look and mitigates the severity of the jacket.

This will also work with patterned blouses, fold the collar out over the blazer (or pop the collar), crunch the sleeves, and fold the cuff over. This will be a workhorse for you!

Here's a post where Angie's doing exactly this with a denim shirt:

This is a good, classic silhouette, Meredith. I've actually been seeing longer jackets reemerging in the past year, and classic tailoring, which includes modest shoulder pads, are never "out." This jacket is dressier and more conservative than most in your closet, which is probably why it's been an orphan. I'd keep playing with it in your closet, making adding more color to the mix.

@Shannon,
Thanks for giving me the thumbs up. I held onto it because I KNEW it could be practical. I just have had trouble styling so it wouln't look to plain or severe on me. I like with both blouses for different reasons.

@Sarah A,
Thanks for liking the hem. I am not bothered by the little swing at all although if the general consensus had been negative about it I would indeed have considered tapering it. That is a great tip about leaning against the wall the check the shoulder pad thing. They actually don't bother me but cinnamon fern had a question about them so I was checking.

i like it! i think the fit is good and think the black can serve as a nice backdrop to many of your new colorful pieces. I espacially like #1 and #5, the swinging hem that Vildy dislikes i actually think is quite fun and looks good over your well fitting jeans. If the shoulder pads (as current) bother you you can always have a different size put in by a tailor. Although i think they look good, i read on a petite blog (cant remember the name) then to check the should size you should lean slowly against a wall while looking in the mirror. You shoulder and the jackets shoulder should touch at about the same time. i.e. if the pad hits first it is too big, if your shoulder hits first too small. if that makes sense.

@CocoLion,
Thanks Coco! I was worried that the length of it might seem a little long. It's been so long since I wore a real blazer. I definitely need to get used to it for sure but I got used to skinnies and am starting to feel better about dresses so I know I can do this.

@JennyAnne,
Thanks so much! I feel much more encouraged.

@Mo,
I hear you on trying to get excited about a basic blazer. I need to work it so that it feels more like "me".

@Vildy,
Hmmm. Interesting as I hadn't noticed a particular flare but maybe it does flare a little. I could wear it close of course or just taper the outer hem.

@Marie,
Thanks for the approval. I think I just need to work on getting comfortable.

@wendyraye,
Thank you so much! I kind of like the last look too and am glad if I helped give you some ideas. I definitely put myself in the "sporty" category. Just working on trying to make it stylish also.

@Mia,
I love the point you made about the Chanel MOTG. Brilliant. I do have some structured bags although they are not Chanelisque per se. I will definitely also try it with the other items you mentioned. Thanks for the advice!

@cinnamon fern.
I will definitely keep trying as the jacket seems to be meeting mostly with approval. I think stripes and the blazer do work well. It has very small pads. I can barely feel them in there.

I think it looks smart with the stripes. I often follow Angie's "Chanel MOTG" formula which starts with the striped top and blazer. Almost any ballet flat, a statement ring and a fairly structured bag (obviously a Chanelique one is great but others work) and you're good to go. I'd definitely keep the jacket if I was you. Also, could try beige pants, white tank or tee and a pendant necklace for another classic look that can go a lot of places.

I would keep the blazer for your funeral capsule. . .but black seems rather severe on you, and I think you are missing your colorful/playful piece when you wear it. Maybe you can figure out a way to counterbalance the blazer's seriousness?

I'll be watching this, since I am in the process of getting a black simple blazer myself for interviews (and hopefully beyond). I'm no expert, but it looks like a good fit so I'd only ask if it's the style of it you aren't comfortable with. That is my personal struggle - I can't seem to find a basic blazer that makes me excited. I like an extra this or that, which can work against a classic look for interviews.

I think it looks very nice - I don't see a thing wrong with it. Wear it!

Looks like a classic black blazer to me. I think it looks like a versatile piece. I wear mine a TON in A/W. Maybe you just have to get used to integrating it into your wardrobe? Fit looks fine to me.

Dear ladies,
I have owned this jacket for TWO years and still can't decide if I should keep it or not. I never wear it because I am not sure if it fits my style or if it fits and flatters correctly. I really just don't know how I feel about it. Please give critiques. If this doesn't work please suggest what I should be looking for.
