I tend to stick to item type then by colour. I keep a seasonal closet though. I always find it gets a little wonky during transitional times, like now, but sorts itself out fairly quickly without a lot of time or effort.
I find I'm hanging more and more all the time instead of going between closet and dresser to get dressed.

I organize by season. All my short sleeves go together, colorized, light to dark progresses left to right (it's one of the few areas I don't think backwards after years of working on a concert stage and having no choice but think right to left). Pants are a bit more haphazard. Shorts go left, anything longer than knee length goes right. Again, colorized just like tops. Everything faces left. Everything is on screaming pink flocked slimline hangers.

I'm a little OCD in my closet

Interesting thread. FWIW here’s my set up, it’s mainly dictated by whether certain fabrics can be folded or not without major creasing.
These items I keep in separate drawers, folded neatly but no particular order-
1) wool or cotton knit pullovers
2) wool or cotton knit cardis
3) jeans and denim or knit skirts
4) tee shirts
5) sportswear and loungewear
CLOSET: dresses, dressy pants, blouses, shirts, coats, assorted jackets. No order- random hanging. Works well enough though as the wardrobe is pretty small so I can see things fairly easily.
STORAGE BAG (at very top of wardrobe): items that are in the off season. ATM I’ve just put summer dresses up there and a few really light blouses and skirts.
I’m happy with the system at the moment. Perhaps some more organizing of the hanging closet would be a relaxing way to spend a spare hour two though.

By sleeve or pants length, by weight, and then by color in each category. Most currently worn weight in the center. So my lightest weight crops, then medium weight crops, then lightweight pants, etc.

Since when I adopted Marie Kondo's suggestion of just separating cotton from wool my life became much easier. No more complicated seasonal subdivisions, no waste of time in a hurried morning thinking "oh, where did I put my lightweight blue pullover? Is it with the Winter clothes or with the Spring clothes ?". Now I know exactly where to go pick what.

I like Aida’s idea of “necessary styling thing.” That’s kinda where I’m at now. “Need a long layer? Look in this direction...”

For a while I was very fixated on dressing in columns of color so I organized everything by color, or to be more exact, value: light, medium, dark. But the resulting closet chaos was impossible.

I think this system would work really well since you hang everything! Most of the tops that are hanging for me are all-season; I usually go by color but at the moment they're arranged by "necessary styling thing" -- sheer tops together, then very cropped tops, then normal length tops, then tunic length, then high summer, then ultra casual. At least I know what that order is, heh. I have most of my season specific stuff grouped together, otherwise though: my heavy knits are in one section together and summer knits together in another for example. So I guess I do a hybrid of what you're describing

Though I love colour, most of my closet is not organized by colour, but by style (skirts, pants, blouses, pullovers, etc.), and then by silhouette (long, short, turtlenecks, crewnecks, short sleeves, long sleeves, etc.) Most knitwear, except long cardigans, are folded. Warm wool sweaters are separated from thinner sweaters. I don't feel the need to organize everything by colour, as I can easily see most items in my wardrobe and grab items in the colours I want. To me, it's more important to have items organized by silhouette, so that I don't have to use a lot of time to find the one I'm looking for.

My scarves and shawls are all hanging (so they're easy to see and grab) and are organized by thickness/size and then by colour.

My footwear is organized by style/silhouette and then by colour.

I live in a climate where each season can be very different from the others. In my closet I prefer to have only items it feels natural to wear in the current season. Items that I know I'm not going to wear for the next several months will be stored in my attic.

I hang first by color, then by weight and style. First come sleeveless tops, then short sleeves, then long sleeves like buttondowns, then long sleeved knits, light weight to heaviest.

Next are toppers in that color category...vests, short sleeved and long sleeved jackets. Then come bottoms...skirts, pants, dresses. Coats are in a hall coat closet. At the end of each color is a hanger with scarves that are mostly that color. Heavy scarves for winter coats are with the coats.

With this method I can usually locate items quickly and it is obvious when I have too many black shirts or if navy blues clash.

UNFRUMPED-
I hear what you are saying about first world problems but I think you are correct- when the world feels out of control I too feel the need to feel in control of something...and my wardrobe is it. I may not shop a lot but I am always rearranging, folding, organizing- trying to find a better way and finding inner peace and calm. Btw- same for linen closet, medicine chest, craft/ sewing area, kitchen and pantry.
I think thingas have become less complicated for me over the years.
1-Because seasons no longer seem as well defined as they once were, I no longer pack anything away. (And I hate AC - freezing in summer too. )
2- Fashion has forced me to have specific behavior that has lead to a less complicated wardrobe. For example- I don’t have any winter dresses- none. I have been fortunate not to need one. ( did I just jinx myself?)I have 1 nice wool suit that can carry the day if needed. Because I use to have trouble finding nice wool pants in tall- I bought wool tights to wear under regular dress pants. I love turtlenecks but buy light weight layering ones that can be worn 8-10 months of year. Blouses are 3/4 sleeve or long sleeve - if it’s warm I fold them up. If cold I pair with sweater, blazer or both. I have blazers- some wool some 4 season fabric. I can get 8-10 months out of wool blazers because weather gets cool at night in North East US. I also supplement with scarves and shawls. Layering became a thing when hot flashes hit and behavior stuck ( no heavy sweaters for same reason.)
In my armoire I have turtlenecks and medium weight sweaters on 1 shelf and tee/ tanks and light weight sweaters on 2 nd shelf. 3 rd shelf holds boxes for swim suits, sleepwear and gym clothes. Drawer 1- undergarments and camis . Drawer 2- socks, tights, stockings.
When I open my closet door I see everything in it.Closet has shirts arranged by color and sleeve length within each color. Spring/ summer dresses the same- color & sleeve length. Blazers by color but by fabric weight within color category. Dress Pants by color but separate also by denims, knits and summer capris.I am not a minimalist by any stretch and would not know what to do with a walk in closet. I have a real tight color palette of classic/ sporty clothes and no real orphans. I am guilty of holding some duplicates, a few things for super good and holding small capsule for “ junky”- painting, gardening, heavy cleaning.
Thanks for this post- just talking/ writing about closet organizing is zen like for me. ( beats watching news lately)

Sounds like you have found a system that works well for you.l tend to swap out winter and summer but then hang all similar garments together.unfortunately I don’t have the space to hang everything so a lot is folded on shelves but I think out of preference I would prefer to hang most things.

Oh, yes, I’m fabric oriented. I separate cotton shirts from silky blouses. Then I separate by colour. And then I separate by type: short sleeve, long, short.

I rather prefer certain silhouettes, so it sorta works out. It’s not as visually chaotic as it might be otherwise.

I don’t separate patterns from solids. I go with the dominant colour in a pattern.

I do both! My primary type of organization is by type of garment, but I organize by weight/warmth after that. It's pointless to do seasonal organization because temperatures are highly unpredictable here. But my dresses and tops are pretty clearly either warm or cool weather based on sleeve length. It helped with putting outfits together immensely when I put warm to the left and cool to the right. And I do color in rainbow order after that.

You know you have a real first- world problem when you still can’t decide the best way to organize your hanging clothes.

I’ve used various category systems— always separating tops, bottoms, jackets but within tgst, I tried silhouette- based top distinctions, such as short- boxy, long etc, but it turns out there’s a fair amount of overlap or just “ picky- picky” on the differences. Or tried only short or long sleeves. And I like color- coding for visual calm and to see, wow, how did I get so much navy!

But in thinking about wears and seasons, I tend to dress by temperature even though I dress way more the same, due to air- conditioning and running cold, than most folks, and also find that thicker or heavier tops often look more finished or polished ( except when I know I will be “ seen” in a jacket and need best layering/ outfit coordination)

By that I mean I tend to wear the warmest things as long as I can or mix them back in for a drop in temp, but I also wear lighter weights when we are at peak summer for weeks. I tried wearing some merino knits truly year- round but they just are not right for 3-4 months, primarily coming and going, hot car after work, it’s too much. Though I think there could be some perfect ultra- light versions if I found them in my perfect styles and colors.

Also, BTW I hang ALL my work clothes including all sweaters and knits. No folding.

Thus it makes sense to hang a group of heavier wool knits, then merino weights, then thick linen cotton, lightweight linen, woven as, and so on.
Several of these “ weights” have duped in 2 colors which can be good to identify if the top is good but a color is orphaned, or what.
The result is more hectic re: visual color but seems to make more sense for checking the weather and for saying, hmm,” this far end of heavy knits is about finished for the temps now “, or, wow, I don’t need any more short- sleeved tops! ( or, “ I have a wardrobe hole for a specific top). And this might play into my finding that I actually run more seasonal than I admit, and might need loose capsules of specific fabrications that seem to be seasonal fit me, for whatever reason. I know I can color Code within categories but that will still not give the organized “ rainbow”.

Over to you— are you very fabric- oriented , or color- coding sensitive, or what?

The good thing of course is that, unlike World Peace, I can play with rearranging if I don’t find it working.
