Interesting thought process! You did a great job in categorising your items and listing the gritty ones you may need.
I agree that zippers and grommets add grit, and I would also add camo (I love outfit #3!) and utility details such as cargo pockets or shoulder straps. Maybe even animal print if you like it?
I'm also looking for such details (my style moniker is GI Princess after all) and have spotted a few in the new Spring collection. I'm not sure these exact items are available out of France, but maybe they indicate a broader, international trend?

Those boots are awesome. I have some rather like that on my Styletread wish list. My own studded gold boots I like to wear with ponte/leather pants to be a bit of a rock chick, if you'd consider that?

Thank you all for compliments and encouragement! I will definitely post some pics with the boots to get your ideas.

I really appreciated Angie’s advice (i think in a January post) to “define eyebrows, eyes and lips”. When I think about a whole putting-on-makeup routine, i feel overwhelmed. (Also I live in south Florida and most makeup melts right off in the heat.). But emphasizing the three features Angie suggests feels like something I can handle and that will be worth the effort.

I will challenge myself to get those “special” items into rotation. And to make the effort to add accessories to my outfits. It just makes me feel better, and that’s reason enough to do it.

Organizing your closet this way was a smart move and is already paying off! It looks like you have a good idea of how to increase the "grit quotient" of your wardrobe.

Several forum members have talked about "saving" special items instead of wearing them. Eventually, they usually challenge themselves to wear them and enjoy them. :)

I am the same way as you with accessories and hair...it just seems like so much work! Angie says that hair is one of the most important "accessories," and I believe she also says that makeup is necessary to put the "finishing touches" on an outfit (but tell that to Emmanuelle Alt, ha ha). If you're like me and just can't cope with the makeup some days, try just curling your eyelashes, brushing your eyebrows (you can set them with a little aloe, maybe), and putting on some colored lip balm. I am amazed at what a difference just curling my eyelashes can make.

I love your latest pic, with the shorts. It is hard to find pretty shorts! I am always on the lookout. As far as the boots go, if you feel so inclined, maybe take some pics with a few different stylings, even if you don't feel like they work well. If forum members can see how the boots fall on your leg and what they look like with different pieces of clothing, we might be able to suggest other options.

Brilliant idea(dividing clothes by moniker' s elements)-will have to let it sink for myself, too-and

Wow, you have such a great style!!!!

I LOVE your outfits here, no matter if pretty, bold or gritty! Do they have to be all three at once, and all the time? I'm so sorry I cannot see today's outfit by now(it is hided already) but gold sandals and engineer boots are great for increaisng the gritty if you would like so!

Thank you so much for your insightful comments! It makes me so happy each time someone makes the effort to comment.

Funnily enough- I actually own most of the items you mentioned! I have fabulous doc marten-esque boots and a great khaki jacket. I’m realizing the problem isn’t so much buying items I like, but rather making myself put the effort into wearing them. Some of them feel too special to wear. Some pieces I like so much I’m afraid to wear- what if they get ruined and I can never replace them? And sometimes it just seems like so much effort to put on accessories- but I feel so much better and have so much fun when I make the effort. Clearly the answer is to just go ahead and wear them constantly!

Posting the outfit pics has really helped, too- I can see the impact of accessories and it encourages me to make the effort. And if I know I’m taking an outfit pic, then I’m more likely to reach for the accessories.

My head isn’t in these pics because in my mind’s eye I am wearing a bold lip and have a tousled updo. In real life I’m lucky to be wearing chapstick and my hair is usually falling out of a sweaty bun- even when I’m at work. I own my own business, so I need to be a better advertisement for it. I added a daily reminder on my phone that reads “hair, makeup, accessories” to help me take the five minutes- literally just five minutes!- needed to add those elements to my look. You’ll know if I’ve succeeded if my pics start to include my head!

Below is today’s outfit and my fabulous boots. They are gorgeous and also an awkward height- I’m not sure how to style them.

This is amazing! I love that your new closet organization has already yielded these insights. Great that you have figured out both how you can use what you already own more effectively, AND a strategy for adding items to your wardrobe in the future. Brava!

I like your outfits. I think the pants with zippers do add a nicely gritty element. Perhaps you could invest in this type of moto-pant in olive or grey as well as various denim shades?
A leather jacket or any moto jacket could work too. And some doc marten boots wouldn’t hurt either....
best of luck with it!

Yes I think bigger more obvious studs and zips on footwear would help. I think the first flats have some grit but I agree get kinda lost. The blue and coral sandals are great and with the black triangles almost cover off all three in one!

Last week I posted that I’ve rearranged my closet according to my style moniker: Gritty Pretty Bold. I divided my closet into three different sections, one for each word in the moniker, and placed each item in my wardrobe in the section I felt it fit into. My hope is that having such clear divisions will help me incorporate all of my moniker adjectives into each of my outfits-I’m trying to pull something from each category as I dress. I often feel good about the pretty and bold aspects of my outfits, but feel like I’m lacking the gritty element.

A week into the experiment, I am not much better at including gritty in my daily look, but I’ve gained some good insight into why. Seeing my “gritty” clothing items together made me realize that most of them actually read as pretty neutral/basic. A khaki skirt, olive pants, black jeans- items like these definitely aren’t pretty or bold, but they also don’t say “gritty” very loudly.

The strongest gritty pieces in my wardrobe are accessories- I have some great rings, watches and bracelets that suit my gritty style well. However, a lot of days I don’t quite muster the energy to wear those statement pieces. They languish in my drawer unworn, while I feel like I’m missing a major part of my style statement. Lose/lose situation!

I see a couple ways to improve. One is to wear the gorgeous gritty accessories I already own!! An absolutely free way to increase my satisfaction with my look and get better use out of my wardrobe.

Another is to make sure any new gritty clothing items I buy make a stronger statement. I’m planning to buy a new pair of sandals for the summer, and I am going to be extra careful that they read loud and clear as gritty.

Here are some outfits from the week. In the first, I’ve got pretty (polka dots, floaty skirt) and bold (graphic cardigan, bright bag, pattern mixing) but the shoes I think of as gritty are almost invisible in the outfit.

The second and third are a little better. The graphic blouse is soft and flowy and the zippers on the pants and shoes add some grit. Not particularly bold, though. The next outfit has pattern mix with camo pants and plaid shirt, pretty blue cardigan, and gritty zippers on the jeans and shoes and the leather bracelet. My wrist tattoo adds a little grit to every outfit.

The next two are only pretty, although the blue and coral sandals are a little bold I think? Today’s outfit was probably the grittiest- plaid, black, zippers and a leather bracelet.

Looking forward to your comments!
