LaPed, you may have hit on it with the need for tights in winter. Dresses/skirts just aren't as simple then. Funny about how people have such different basic impressions of things.

Synne and LaPed, not sure if you were around for my post a few weeks ago, but the persona I used to illustrate "frumpy" was "farmers wife" which led some people down the wrong road, to idyllic pastural scenes, when I meant the no-nonsense Midwesterners I grew up around. I think it's the same as Synne's "dockworker" look. Perhaps there are similar types in New England or Utah?

Nikki, the pockets make tucking more fun. Here's a little story about my new buddy: https://cpreducatorsinc.com/cpr-doll-face/

Synne, alas? Why, lass? Interesting idea about the shirt collars. I can always use more styling tricks, especially ones that stay done once I do them. Your comment about my style being feminine has me thinking about different types of androgyny. Some I think serve to highlight a woman's body (think flapper girls) so the result is more femme, whereas a non-binary look (which must technically be androgynous, right?) does pretty much the opposite. The former appeal to me, the latter is what my jeans+big welted crewneck sweater default to.

Congrats!
You look great in these different silhouettes, a minor detail that I think makes a big impact is the choice of necklines. To me your style is very feminine (not conservative femme, but alas), and I think you look best in rounded or boat neck necklines. How about the black knit top from the first outfits with the flare jeans? The shirt collars reads masculine for me. Have you tried inverting the collar, tucking it inside the shirt? It makes for a mandarin collar, I use this little style trick when wearing shirts. It softens the look, back into femme land

Really like the jeans in #9! Awesome front pockets. The patterned trucker jacket is a fun and unique piece. Love the name Rescue Annie and I’m glad you’re certified Congratulations!

Congrats on the certification! The pools near me are all understaffed and desperate for both life guards and swim instructors. I'm sure you will have no trouble finding a position if/when you come back.

I love #8 and #9, especially the tucked version. The long lines of the jeans and your hair look anything but frumpy. I'm over here trying to wrap my mind around jeans=frumpy. :)

#4 is very cool too! I know what you mean about easing off of dresses once it gets chilly. I think of dresses/skirts as pure ease and simplicity when I can wear them with bare feet/legs. As soon as I have to add tights, they feel so complicated compared to pants!

Thanks everybody! Your comments and observations are helpful as I rework my winter style.

Cee, the Baywatch Run is an advanced skill. I’m not there yet

Dee, I had a lot of back-&-forth about the color of that top, so appreciate your appreciation.

Angie, jeans usually say “frumpy” to me, in a stereotype-that-shall-not-be-named that I invoked a couple weeks ago, so I want to figure out how to wear these jeans and others in more interesting ways. The swim colors are another of those things that just happened—new suit this year, rashguard purchased in 2010, thinking the hot pink was a one-off both times.

Zaeobi, it was “everyday” but only weekdays for a couple weeks. I usually only swim once or maybe twice a week, and only wash my hair when I swim.

Sally, you’re pushing me up on my soapbox. Swimming is an important skill for everyone to have. One of my “classmates” is a teacher who took the course so his students will be safer on field trips. I encourage you dive back in, maybe with your family.

Bijou, the funny thing is that on the first day of class, which was held during fall break, I was glad that my expectation of being in a class of high school kids was incorrect; they were all adults. After a few days, some of us asked each other how old we were. Two were within a decade of my age; the rest were much younger adults. The partner who I’d been schlepping around the pool, pulling out of the water, attacking & freeing myself from grips, is 20 years old! Took a minute for the coin to drop that she is the same age as my son. Best of all, she had no difficulty believing I’m as old as her son. I have no idea how old I am, lol.

Katerina, good to see you back! I love your iconic, slightly dressy style and appreciate your analysis & comments.

Rachylou, I’m guard for now but want to be teacher. The rate of drowning is much higher for Black people—adults and children—in the US than for white people, so whenever I’m back, I want to teach in a program for Black will-be swimmers. This is the first step in training for that. Until then, “walking feet, young lady! Walking feet”.

Well done on the certification - I'm not a very strong swimmer, so people who can swim that well are impressive!

I like #2 with the shorts tucked in but with some colour added in (#1 is nice too but the black top with the B&W shorts feels a tad severe on you).

As for the paisley top, I actually like it both ways - tucked in feels a bit more retro.

PS - Your hair looks gloriously thick too! What's your secret to washing it everyday but still having it look shiny?

I agree that those jeans in #9 are fabulous on you and the paisley top tucked in looks great styled that way. You look long and lean again in outfit #6 and that purple top is a nice colour on you. The trucker jacket does work well with your jumpsuit.

Well done getting certified as a life guard.

Really like #1 and #8 the best - your legs look a mile long in 8! #4 looks a lil seasonally confused w/puffer and shorts, but I have kinda a poison eye for sc pics on anyone. #6 and #9 look good, but #8 blows me away!

Another week, another couple outfits. Nothing too spectacular because I was commuting a couple hours daily for a lifeguard class. I’d forgotten what it’s like to wash my hair every day!

I’m figuring out that in cool weather, I shy away from the dressier looks that are so natural to me in summertime. I’m not sure why that is, but it is evident. I’ve even been wearing (gasp!) jeans!

The shorts outfit was for a glorious 70 degree day that I spent inside with Rescue Annie. I had one more layer underneath, a coral/salmon colored tank top, but in reality I didn’t even get past the sweater. Bass shawl collar sweater, 1990s. Gap factory shorts, 201x

This truckers jacket is the closest thing to orange I have for this time of year. This jumpsuit is a great example of why summer dressing is easier for me than winter. Even though my legs are fully covered, the thin fabric makes the body outline easy to see. Winter fabrics are much stiffer, with less give, so they need to be planned more carefully.

Jeans from 2010, velour top from this summer, and a favorite belt.

The red boots are a tiny bit shorter (heels) than the ones I had the flare jeans hemmed for, but I wanted to give them a try. Not sure which way I like the paisley shirt better. I’ve had it since college. Navy shirt is from the Esprit outlet in the 90s.

In reality, my Funkita workout bikini is what I’ve been wearing (rash guard on top, obvi). And look—my lifeguard certification card is the color of the week, orange!

Comments and suggestions appreciated!
