A sapphire would be more valuable than many other gems and wear better, too, due to its hardness. I also agree that it looks like a fire opal, but that would be true of any rich, orange stone. My ex-husband is a geologist and he told me that every gem stone comes in just about any color of the rainbow. They are usually most popular just in the one color we think of, though. I have a green garnet ring.
