I sort of love bright colors of all hues, but, who cares if it's a trend? Make you own trends!

I can relate that to our gang issues in education. Certain colors and team affiliates have gang associations that fashion can't transcend. Wearing them in the wrong schools & contexts can make just about anyone vulnerable to becoming a random target...

But yes, there are only so many colors. They all have many competing layers of both positive and negative social, religious & historical connotations.

Certain traditional color combinations are strongly associated with their respective holidays for me so I don't want to wear them in outfits, but other than electric neon brights in clothing and accessories (which I find loud and jarring), I can't think of any specific color that I have an aversion for.

I love the color orange because I think of a lifetime of lovely associations with it such as my beautiful, bright chestnut horse (used as my avatar); a bowl of clementines; flowers in the garden, especially when paired with other flowers in shades of purples or blues; monarch butterflies on my magenta butterfly bush; autumn landscapes and sunsets; in an evening fireplace; as an accent color with greys and other neutrals in home decor and in outfits. To me it's just a warm, inviting and happy color. Yeah, I love it.

I think you can latch on to any color and come up with something morbid or disgusting to associate it with, so maybe the mental antidote is to find and think about all the beautiful associations that exist instead.

I certainly can understand this - I don't wear camo or faded denim jackets due to certain associations. I don't like wearing orange because I just don't love the color or how I look in it.

Funny, right now I'm having extremely positive associations with orange, but my city is alight with it these days in support of our baseball team, fighting for the league championship. Outside of fan gear and one cold-weather running top, I don't wear orange unless it's an accent color since it is not the most flattering on my coloring. Same goes for yellow. But my bicycle is bright orange, and I love it -- it gets lots of compliments.

I don't really have any strong negative emotional associations with a color, unless it's some unfortunate muddy or sour color that occurs in the most unpleasant of natural causes. I am not a big fan of neon, but not for any emotional associations -- it just feels unpleasant and rather blaring on my eyes.

Not a fan of camo in the traditional colors, but I love my blue camo shorts that actually end up looking more like water.

I can really understand your reaction Sarah. I'm not a fan of orange either, but with the added reason of really not liking to eat oranges and that kind of very intense orange colour does my complexion no favours at all. I'm also a little averse to green/red or green/gold combos because it all looks a tad too Father Christmassy! I'm drawn to tones of red on their own as it's a colour I always associate with my mum so that's very much a positive connection.

I can't wear camouflage, denim skirts and nude stockings would be a stretch - all due to local associations. On the other hand I have a soft spot for tie dye!

I can completely understand your aversion to orange - and actually, now that you've brought it up - I'm probably not going to be able to look at an orange garment without thinking about the gruesome horrors as well. I also think about the TV show "Orange is the New Black!" Also, to be honest, orange is not a good color on me, so I wouldn't be wearing it anyway!

I have an aversion to camouflage prints. I associate it with war - and with hunting. I've never worn camouflage - probably never will because I can't get those 2 situations out of my head!

Color can be very powerful, as your reaction demonstrates. Fortunately, I think that the predictions about what color will be "in" are often wrong. So hopefully you won't even have to deal with seeing the particular orange in question on others.

I don't recall ever purposely selecting or shunning a color because of positive or negative associations outside of fashion. But I have only been paying attention to fashion for a little over a year now. It's an interesting question.

There are definitely things I would not choose to wear for non fashion reasons even if they became fashionable.

I can completely understands your aversion to orange, and that of your fellow countrymen. So, orange may be trendy in Paris, but so what? You have to wear what makes you happy.

I use trendy colors to pick up more of a color I already love. Or to test drive a new color I might love but am not sure of. So, when mint green was popular, I picked up several pieces as I wasn't sure when I would be able to find them again. I looked for radiant orchid to try, but I never found it at retail.

There are some sites predicting that orange will be 'in' for SS2015, and indeed there was quite a bit of it in the shows presented. I'm not so sure about it though. Whenever I see this sort of orange --

http://www.style.com/slideshow.....h/collecti

-- what comes to mind is gruesome so-called "IS" beheadings of (mainly) my fellow countrymen. To put it mildly, orange is not a colour I want to be wearing in SS2015.

Am I mad to think that fashion might be influenced by such horrors?

To be fair, orange was never one of my preferred colours, but I did buy some orange items when it seemed very current, and I did enjoy wearing them, much to my friends' surprise.

Do YOU ever develop an aversion to a (potential) fashion trend for a reason not connected with fashion?

Or to take this into a more positive direction, have you ever developed a positive desire for a trend because it has positive associations for you?

Sarah
