I vote keep. I have a similar pair that I wear around the house in summer (and a similar climate). My only concern would be washability like Suz says. But you won’t know until you try.

What Suz said.
I like the shorts. And I buy rayon items to get the coolness and drape. Rayon blends often launder better.
I will exert some care in laundering favorite items or items that serve a specific purpose but I’m having to be more realistic about my pandemic- wear and retirement wear as I know I prefer not to have to baby things.
I often do the wrinkle- scrunch test of fabric before buying or making final decision. The other thing is if you have these you can test them out before getting any more, assuming others might become available.

Yes, exactly Suz. It’s the around the house shorts that could go get the mail or such. Hopefully they’d wash with just a little shrinking.

So, I live in a totally different climate, but I absolutely understand what you are after here. It's kind of like the shorts version of a housedress. Not something you'd wear all that often out of the home or garden -- maybe to a neighbour's socially distanced pool party or maybe for a quick run to get milk or something -- but basically, something comfortable and practical and cool and prettier than the usual short. Summer loungewear.

I'm a huge thumbs up on these for that purpose. I love the colours (duh, blue and white, right?) the pattern, and the overall vibe. They feel work with several of your tops. They will be cool. Fabulous.

My only personal hesitation might be over the launderability (or lack thereof) of rayon. Sometimes you can't throw it in the washer without a major shrinkage and then there is the ironing...so fabrication is pretty important. Rayon is gorgeous for the drape and feels relatively cool when cut loose like this...but if it's not practical, it will sort of defeat the purpose.

Haha sterling. I had never heard it until I saw Angie say it here, but I am at peace with the crease. At least for casual wear. And only in small doses. I only would want a piece or two.

To clarify the voting. I originally voted Yay.

After seeing LisaP's comment about wrinkles, I changed my Yay to Nay.

Thanks Angie. Lounge wear shorts is a good term for them. These would not be a short I see as much of an out and about one for me, though it could be for others.

Sterling- I’m personally not too bothered by wrinkles. I’ve had linen shorts/pants in past, and that doesn’t drive me crazy the way it does some.

JAaileen - I agree the extra heat does mean some modifications are necessary. I guess I wish I could try a smaller size just to compare.

In extreme heat such as yours, I think clothes should be on the loose side. So these are good in my opinion. I also like the border print.

I've come back to add some additional thoughts.

For your climate, these are ideal. I really like the color, print, and fit a lot. I personally never saw these as pajama-like. That does concern me. Perhaps I've been spending too much time in pajamas and my eye is jaded.

I am not bothered by the side view because I think that is the way these types of shorts fit. They look natural to my eye.

However, I am very concerned about wrinkly and baggy. You will never feel good if they are wrinkly and baggy on you. If there is any sense that the fabric will be wrinkly, I vote return immediately.

I'm glad we got the opportunity see them on you.

Phoebe - yes, it’s so hard in selfies to get proper perspective. I do think there will be some wrinkling, but that the pattern will make it less visible.

The size down is sold out, so not an option to try.

Funny, I don't see a pyjamas influence here.

I'm thinking the fabric will wrinkle some but that doesn't bother me and the whole relaxed vibe is offset by the crispness of the pattern. You could try a smaller size but I think it the camera angle might be making them look more voluminous than they really are.

Slim cat - I added a few more pics up top with shoes. I would certainly add earrings too. I have that tank in both the white and a navy that I found last year. I love them.

LisaP - It’s a long summer for me, and winter is not cold either. For someone who always runs hot. It’s no wonder I will sacrifice some structure in garments.

Tina. Thank you. I would certainly be willing to fold a tee under. It’s hard to have the right length tops for everything. Too short and it doesn’t cover. Too long and it doesn’t look right either.

LisaP - yes, I am going for a step up from pajamas. I’m with you in that they will never be the most flattering shape. Boy are they comfortable though. I have to just decide if they will make me feel bad about myself. If so, I definitely would need to return. We will hit 42°C this week, and I need items that work with the temps I see for months.

Minaminu - I agree they’re a bit big. In the past, I’d go to the store and try a smaller size. I guess I could order a different pattern in a smaller size, but the other pattern is very wild looking. I tend toward looser than tighter.

It'll come down to footwear and accessories - all of that will make the shorts look dressier ( they are fine fit already ). Maybe chunky slides, sandals with a bit of platform? Sneakers are the good option ( neutral colors, metallics ..) .
It's a pretty print - love #3 the best ( very special top with fine details ).

It's hard not to let my personal preferences get in the way here. If the intent is one step up from pj's, then this is it. Are they going to be wrinkly and baggy after sitting ? The print is nice, lots of colours you can work with here, and they look comfortable. I'm not sure they are the most flattering - because they are so unstructured - but if that's not a worry, and if comfort is the goal......then if you like them, wear them!

I think you have found what you’ve been looking for. I expected the legs to be more voluminous, they are just right and you wouldn’t need to worry about modesty when sitting down. I actually love the olive top with this print, it goes really well!
The side view is fine, nothing unusual to see here. You are totally proportioned and this is just what roomier bottoms do. I know you said no tuck but if you even fold the front of your t-shirt under just a bit you will see it helps.

I agree that maybe footwear try-ons could help. As for the side photo - the front looks like it is sitting higher on your waist than the back - the hemline seems angled, like you've pulled them up higher in front - are they sitting on your body properly?

Sarah - you’re right that adding footwear would help dispel the pajama vibe. I’d love to be wearing my sandals more this summer. Pretty much I’m wearing tennis shoes right now. I also usually have my toes painted, and wouldn’t wear sandals without that. But I may be coming around to not having them painted.

I’m adding one more picture above. A side view which once I tried them on again better articulates my hesitation. The front has a pleat, and due to their flowy nature, the leg is a very wide cut. (Ahem it must be the pleat, not my stomach )When I look from the side, it seems like it’s adding more volume than I may be comfortable with.

I think the shorts work. As a member of team “if it goes, it doesn’t have to match” I endorse top #4.

I’d encourage you to try styling them with some footwear and accessories and see if that helps banish the “are these just pjs?” worry from your mind. Even if you wear them mostly at home with bare feet and without accessories, that might help you reframe them for yourself if that makes sense.

Sterling - thanks. I know the last color does not “match”, but I consider olive to be a neutral and I was testing out other colors besides navy or (off) white. I know you need an outfit to match.

I like the shorts a lot.

My favorite top is number 3. Number 4 is off in color on my monitor. Doesn't work at all.

Let me change my mind. Number 4 does work. It is not as flattering in terms of color on my monitor.

I’ve had in my mind for the last few years that I’d like to find a pair of soft shorts in a challis fabric. I didn’t want them to be too short. Kind of flowy in an almost skirt like way. I do think this style goes JFE very easily.

So I ordered these J Jill shorts. The colors are going in and out of stock. The light oatmeal on their website is new, but is not a good match for my coloring. (I like it for others).

Also, right now I feel like I’m shopping for one level up from PJs. I’m good with that, but I don’t actually want them to look like PJs. Do they? I’ve tried them with a few different tops. I am between sizes and ordered the larger size. I do not think they would be comfortable in a size down, so it would defeat the purpose, plus they’re sold out anyway. They are pretty voluminous.

So - is this a concept better left in my head, do they look too much like pajamas, and K/R?

PS - please don’t ask me to tuck the tops in. I won’t, even if they did look better that way.

PPS - rayon shorts with back pockets that will hold a phone! What?!?!
