Suz-in regard to the Land's End puffers, I also have a Land's End puffer, knee length, was supposed to be their heaviest down coat....I froze for 3 years in this puffer. It isn't warm past 15-20 degrees F. We get well below zero for a couple months of the year here. I thought I had serious cold sensitivity until I got the EB parka. I've never tried any other down parkas, but IMO, Eddie Bauer really knows their down coats.

Suz,

How about this one from American Eagle (I think there is a store in Kingston where you can at least try it on):

http://www.ae.com/web/browse/p.....1b2166becc

I found this article helpful:
http://www.ottawacitizen.com/D.....story.html

This other article has lots of links towards the latest trends in puffer jackets in Canada:
http://www.ottawacitizen.com/l.....story.html

Hope this helps in some way.

I know first hand how hard it is.

I got very frustrated. I figure for 3 months a year, we wear the same ultra insulated coat, it HAS to be good, no, I mean excellent. For years I have had to deal with being cold with a wool coat, or swamping downs, Michelin Tire look, Spongebob look, or Spongebob look AND being cold. But it's not just that: it's also having to wear the same boots that go with that coat (and are warm enough too!), then having to wear the same things underneath because coats do not go with everything.

This year I got very lucky, my husband got me a Canada Goose one (my Christmas gift in advance). Yes, it was expensive. But when I add up all the failed purchases of lousy coats from the years before, not to mention the pain of having to wear them, and I compare to the price, it is well worth it. Well, that is one argument. But the other is that I think a warm down jacket or coat absolutely is a basic in our climate, not just something you add on when there is a breeze. Their forbidding costs make it so that we cannot have more than one, lest we are millionaires.

Below are picture, it is in the "XS".

Yes, the trim is real coyote fur. But in this case, as it often is, it is 90% from road kill. The other 10% are from from first nation communities traditional hunting (as opposed to farmed animals).

Yes, it's black. I too was trying to avoid it. But unfortunately in XS, that's all they had (or another longer coat in red, XXS, which was just a bit too tight).

In the end I am most pleased with it as the cut is so flattering and it is indeed super comfortable.

I'll try to post pics with my older puffers later so you can see the difference.

Cheers!

Suz, how about Sears? I know that size is often an issue with them but I just saw a Roots advertisment at the bottom of this page and thought of them. It may be worth a try as they carry many different brands as well.

Thanks, Dianthus. I will go over the Nygard site more carefully. Sadly, olive is a bad colour for me, too, usually (with some exceptions and this MIGHT be one; it looks a bit greyed in the photo, which for me is good.) I actually really LIKE olive; just have trouble wearing it.

I can also make another trip to Toronto for more focused shopping. And could wait for after Christmas and the sales perhaps.

It is really unfortunate that the Bay where you are has a poor selection. I was trying to avoid black too and tried on quite a few blue and purple coats. I think they had a few in a khaki as well. I looked at the Bay website and there isn't even half of what I saw in the store here. Too bad.

I just checked the Nygard site and they have this one in olive in petites. I usually wear a 6 top and the medium fit well. My other two contenders were a bit too big in Medium and a touch small with a suit jacket in small.

I have no helpful advice, but I wanted to wish you good luck with the search! I'm still searching too and I haven't found anything I liked. I'm once again wearing my old coat at the moment. Just like you I don't want to buy a black, brown or beige coat and I really need the coat to be knee-length. I thought about trying EB too, maybe a size S would be right for me.

Tina, thanks so much for chiming in! I had not thought of Cleo (we don't have a store in Kingston so it's not on my radar). I looked at the website and liked a few coats, but alas, they are only available now in larger sizes and/or not in petite.

Natalie, thank YOU, too. In the past, I have drowned in LE stuff, and if I go by the measurement chart I am too small for their smallest petite. But how did you find that fit? Maybe with a coat there is wiggle room (so to speak!)

Thanks for the other Nordie's links, too. I considered most of those but ruled them out due to size, available size (i.e. what's left) and/ or colour. Tan or beige is horrible on me and some browns are equally bad, plus my last puffer was brown so ideally I would prefer a different colour.

Suz, I recently bought the Lands End Luxe Down Coat in brown and posted some pics of me in it. Would that be an option? I know they have several colors.
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ternatives
Here's the one I bought. I think you'd look fabulous in teal or red:
http://www.landsend.com/pp/Lux.....038;sku_0=::WTL&CM_MERCH=search-_-down+coat&origin=search
And here's a shimmer down coat--you'd look great in brick:
http://www.landsend.com/pp/Shi.....038;sku_0=::SGY&CM_MERCH=search-_-down+coat&origin=search

Nordstrom has a lot of choices, in addition to the ones posted above how about these:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/ga.....ltback=798
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/la.....sultback=0

Also, don't know what color you are looking for but I'm also considering white/cream instead of brown. These two caught my eye but they don't come in petite:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/be.....ultback=13

Another petite Canadian here. Have you tried Cleo? I am not very adept at using a computer and do not know how to post links:( Their coats and jackets are all on sale right now. There are several down jackets, they are not as long as the ones you have posted, but they are not black! I would also try a Sport Chek or something along that line, they often have a good selection of jackets.

Suz, hold out for a flattering non-black puffer! I only know Lands' End, L.L.Bean and Eddie Bauer from my days in the cold northeastern US. Something with a nice waist-curve on the side seams would be really feminine. Also don't leave out ski shops and such. Sometimes they carry more than just gear.

I have black clothes in my wardrobe, but I'm trying not to add any more (except for footwear). It really isn't the best color next to my face either, but it's SO hard when it's the default "color" for every retailer out there!

Also, on the fur-trimmed coat you are considering, I have a black (ugh) suede jacket with real rabbit fur trim that I got from Goodwill. Even thought I'm not a member of PETA or anything, I feel really awkward wearing it, especially knowing how uncomfortable it would make some people feel. I would hate to see you pay full price for something new and then not feel like you could feel fab wearing it around your step daughter.

I hope you find something fantastic, colorful AND warm! Keep up the hunt and post pictures when you find it. If it makes you feel any better, I am buying and returning every pair of jeans in my state. It's making my poor hubby's head spin.....

Ah, I didn't realize you were looking for petite - and that Tahari coat in the midnight blue colour jumped out at me. Too bad it's not available in a non-black colour in petites.

What about these?

http://www1.macys.com/shop/pro.....Type=PDPZ1

http://www1.macys.com/shop/pro.....Type=PDPZ1

http://www1.macys.com/shop/pro.....Type=PDPZ1

I'm not sure about the pockets on that last one (Calvin Klein, although I do like the style in general).

Don't know about shipping to Canada - I went and looked - Macy's does ship to Canada, similar system as Nordstrom, and they also have a pretty good return policy as well (six months I think it is). I don't think Macys has a free shipping to Canada promotion running right now though.

If you order tomorrow, or all this weekend (including Monday a.k.a. 'Cyber Monday') - you are going to get a really good deal, as it's "Black Friday" weekend. I'm no expert on small-ish petite coats though - but from my looking around, so far it seems like Macys and Nordstrom has some very stylish options. I suspect Angie is going to have a much better idea of what brands might fit you well.

In my experience (as a slightly plump, hourglass-ish, medium height person), both Eddie Bauer and Land's End seem to be cut on the large side. I also found that Jones New York and Ellen Tracy were also cut rather large. Seems to me I remember that Kenneth Cole and INC (Macy's brand) were on the small side (useful for you).

Here's hoping some of the petite YLF'ers can chime in on which brands are best.

Good luck on the puffer coat search.

Cilleena, your "spanning" is actually helpful. Your Maine winters are almost exactly like my Kingston winters, though depending where you are you may get a bit more snow than we do. And I am outside a LOT, mostly on foot, taking my daughter skating, shopping, walking. This is a "need" purchase, not a "would like to have" purchase, and the coat needs to be warm as well as good-looking.

I'm going to see if the closest EB store will order it in, in extra small petite; if they do, I would get the sale price, no duty, no extra taxes, and they would also take it back if it didn't work out. From your description it sounds as if it is worth at least a try.

Sveta, thank you for that info re a lighter coloured coat. I seem to be pretty rough on my puffers because even my last one (dark brown) got all kinds of stains on it (despite frequent washings). But that might have been due to poor quality fabric.

Velvety Chocolate - thank you for the link. I DO like that coat, but it's only available in the black in petite. I MIGHT fit the regular XS but it's so risky for me to order without being able to try on because of all the extra I have to pay in duty and taxes and then return shipping as well, from Canada.

I looked at the Bay website and came away singularly uninspired. The best option seemed to be this one: http://www.thebay.com/eng/wome.....bay/219313

But the grey looks awfully forbidding somehow, and it doesn't come in petite. The XS regular might work and at least with this one I could try on.

I also checked MEC, but didn't find anything there either.

Would the Land's End coats be any better than EB, I wonder? Any other options?

Suz, I have a cream puffer and it did not get very dirty last winter. It is machine washable so I washed it 2 or 3 times during the season and it dried pretty quickly.
Just so you are not afraid of a light color...

Hmm, spanner here. I have the EB slopeside down parka that. I love it. It is actually very shapely and flattering as far as down coats go. While I agree that a lot of EB stuff is boxy and big, I do enjoy this particular coat. I've never worn anything warmer, TBH. It is heavy weight for my super cold, Maine winters. You might not need something as heavy, if you don't spend much time outside.

ETA: This is a pic of me from last year in my EB parka. I am about 20 pounds heavier in this pic than you've seen me before though, Suz. It's a size regular Large, Wine color (really pretty, btw). I am a hair shy of 5'7" and about 155 lbs, size 10/12 in the picture.

Maybe at least give the EB parka a shot in the XS Petite....you could always send it back. It is excellent quality.

Oops, actually, mine is the Slopeside parka...not much help for you I'm afraid. I don't know about the Lodge parka, but the Slopeside one is nice.

Suz on "Opinions on EB Lodge Down Parka?"

Hmmm. That is what I was afraid of. I actually have an EB anorak that I love for its colour and practicality but it is way too big for me. It is size small; I bought it when I had lost about 15 of my 30 pounds. So I was hoping the XS petite from them might fit me now. Rats.

Dianthus, Sveta. you make good suggestions. Trouble is, I have drawn a blank so far at those locations. None of the puffers I tried on at our Bay were any good for me. Ditto the Winners. One issue is that I am trying to avoid black. I really don't want a black coat. Like, REALLY. Flat black looks awful on me. And feels way too gloomy.

Quite apart from that, the fit was bad on all the ones I tried so far. But I think I will check the Bay website, too, Dianthus, and your suggestion is a good reminder to do that. We definitely do not get all their styles at our store. And if it can be delivered for free (which might be the case) then why not try?

Angie, I've taken a look at the Nordstrom's site. There are some amazing coats, but some of them come with amazing price tags, too. Also, quite a lot only come in black, or are only available in black in my (possible) size.

Here are a couple of options:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/sa.....tback=2337

Advantage: Not black.

Disadvantages: Might feel a bit peculiar about real fur. I don't have any huge qualms about it personally, but my step-daughter is vegan and out of respect for her beliefs I might be awkward wearing it around her. On the other hand, I'll bet those coyotes were not raised just for their fur.

Also, no idea how warm it is.

Of there is this:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/be.....tback=4289

Advantage: Gets some good reviews. Low price.

Disadvantage: No idea about warmth. White will get filthy in our slushy weather.

May I just say in closing how grateful I am to have found this site? SO many shopping mistakes prevented this way. Thank you all SO much for your help and your thoughts.

Suz, I bought my Angie's approved puffer at Costco last year - for under $100. I wore it all winter, it was insanely warm and still going strong this year. I have seen puffers there this year too, you may want to check them out.
I also saw quite a few puffers at Winners. They were too short in the sleeves for me - which may be a good thing for you:-)

While I like EB for some basics, their jackets are ridiculously large and the pics in the catalog are very deceptive. The fit is boxier than the pictures suggest.

Suz, have you tried the Bay? I bought a Bianca Nygard there a few weeks ago and most of the down coats were 40% off. I tried on quite a few different styles, colors, lengths but the BN fit the nicest on me. I think it ended up being arround $200 with the discount and it is goose down and has a really pretty two-way zipper.

There are *amazing* puffers at Nordstrom at the moment. In fact, it's puffer heaven. Have a squizz and I will chime in again later.
