I saw that one from Zara and it's not a good quality, not very warm.
The Isabel Marant is gorgeous!

I used to have a Zara jacket which I wore through rather quickly. The Isabel Marant jacket looks nice and I love how longer jackets keep me much warmer in the cool weather to the point where I can actually wear a dress underneath with boots and be okay.

I love the looks, but like others have said, the quality must be good enough. I live in a cold climate, too, and Zara coats are normally not good enough for our winters. They are great for fall and spring. The Isabel Marant coat looks particularly interesting.

FWIW, I have two coats, a parka and a puffer, and I get by in winter just fine:)

I am going to answer without reading the other posts so as not to skew my thoughts.

1. I would pass on the Zara one unless you need a fall coat. Even layered beneath, if it feels thin, it is. A good winter coat tends to be hefty. Coats really need to be functional first, stylish second. I live in Wisconsin, so while not Maine, I know cold, snowy, brutal winters.

2. I wish I could say the Isabel Marant coat seems a good choice. It is lovely to look at, but I was very disappointed in the fiber content. It is only 46% wool and 11% alpaca. For a $450 coat, I would expect a much higher wool content. And for where you are living, perhaps even a thinsulate lining.

I tend to look to LL Bean and Lands End partially because they give warmth ratings to coats. I know others have spoken highly of JCrew, but I am not sure of them. This is just me remembering polar vortexes and week after week of it never getting above 15F. Talbots is no Isabel Marant for style, but they do offer their wool coats with thinsulate linings.

I second the comments on the Zara coat. I have a very cute bright green nubby spring coat from Zara and while I like it I don't think it will last long. I also have a classic thinsulate lined J Crew pea coat that after 5 years still looks sharp.

You are all so very helpful, as always. Leaning toward the Zara for the transitional season, plus keep looking for a good warm wool coat. I agree about J Crew quality, just with they would do some more interesting textures. Thanks all!

The look of that coat is fabulous and I think the color and texture will be great with your hair. The "wool blend" fabrication would give me pause. I think you will need something more substantial for a Maine winter.

I don't have much to add that hasn't already been written above.....the Zara doesn't strike me as substantial enough to be a true winter coat. I think you'd still get a few months' wear out of it but not in the dead of winter. I like the textured wool of the IM a lot and it looks like a warmer coat. I'm on the hunt too and not sure yet what I want other than colour. Look online at coats by Mackage - we Canadians know how to make a winter coat

I wasn't impressed by the Zara jackets I've had in the past because of the lightness and also I've started to have some quality issues after 2 years (haha - yeah, if that's okay with you, then that's okay I guess).

I'd vote against it based on that.

Meant to also add -- in regards to pea coat or 3/4 length: if you are in the car a lot, i.e., commute to work by car, etc, then pea coats or car-length coats are great. I am in an urban area so I find 3/4 length (hit at the knee) far preferable, since we do a lot of walking rather than driving. I also like the 3/4 length because it works not just with pants but dresses and skirts.

Oh my, you live in Maine and only have two winter coats? Yes, you need more! And a sharp 3/4 wool coat would be the perfect addition. I'd add two, in fact. One that is lighter weight for Fall, and one that is warmer for winter. Then I'd add a sleek puffer - I know "puffer" and "dressy" don't seem to go together, but puffers have come a long way in recent years.

How's that for enabling? :-D

I second Unmilila's recommendation for a Jcrew coat -- invest in one with thinsulate, which makes all the difference. Warmth without the bulk. My cobalt Jcrew coat is still going strong and it's been 5+ years. I can wear it pretty much throughout late fall, winter, and early spring, though I don't wear it when it's snowing or the temps are in the single digits. It was pricey but worth it when you calculate the cost per wear over the years.

For your lighter weight Fall 3/4 coat, I'd jump on that Zara coat in a heartbeat. SO pretty!!! I once had a similar coat, in a beautiful pink, I think it was LOFT brand. Wore it to death -- worked great in fall and spring, just not in winter. Once it started showing wear (light colors pick up dirt easier) I was ready to give it up but my DD then adopted it as her own, and wore it another two seasons. I'd add that Zara coat myself but I still have a light grey coat in impeccable shape, to fulfill this part of my capsule. I know from experience I just need *one* lightweight fall/spring coat.

As for the navy/ink choice, I'd have to see it in person and check out the fabric content and weight. Not sure it is winter worthy, or just fall weight.

As for coat shapes, I really love the shape of both your choices!! Very modern, on trend, and yet also, quite classic. This shape will work with jeans, casual, for work, for dressing up. Very versatile. I just wish Jcrew would come up with a coat in this shape, with thinsulate, and in petites. I'd buy that in a heartbeat, if you are listening, Jcrew...

I like the color and shape. I don't think, based on the way it moves on the model in the video, that it is made of a very heavy and warm wool fabric. So I am thinking it will not be something you'll wear after January rolls in. Maybe I am just a party pooper. Or maybe you don't get as cold as I do even though we are in the same climate zone.

In the winter, I usually go for thinsulate JCrew for short walk from car to something else, and black Patagonia tres long down parka for long walks. And various other Patagonia puffs and fleeces layered for running. I love J Crew coats and I have a bunch of them, since I have been wearing them since about 1992 (I do get rid of them when they are ratty). They are so brand recognizable, though, that it's nice to have a change (which I am doing this year ... I got an Emerson Fry color block coat that is heavy and looks good on... but it is not formal like the ones you are looking at).

Fellow cold weather friend who has way too many winter coats and just added another late fall early winter to the mix.
1. I love the blue coat - I have found a need for a longer coat - I tend to wear my longer wool coats on non-snowy days when it is a little warmer (all relative - not below zero)
2. If you have a good puffer then this would be a good addition to a coat capsule in my mind.
3. The zara looks like a late fall/early winter coat and in building a coat capsule for cold weather states, I would personally would fill the slot for a dressy warm winter coat over a transitional season coat which is what I would call the Zara coat.

Clearly I have put too much time and thought into my coat capsule. I hate being cold and am also outside supervising busses everyday of the year for 20 minutes before and after school. I know all the appropriate coat, boat and scarf combos for fashionable warmth.

I need a new coat this year. I live in Maine so cold weather is something I live with for a long time. My only winter coats right now, believe it or not, are a pink JCrew peacoat and a really good hooded snow jacket. That is it.

So far, the strongest contender is the white Zara coat, which I really love. Its drawback is that it is lightweight and so potentially limited in its usage -- although I would buy a medium and layer beneath it.

I tried a coat from Emerson Fry but really did not like it on me. It was too classic, it was fawn colored (not a great color on me) and I felt it aged me.

I found this Isabel Marant which I like for several reasons (note that this coat is about $450 on Farfetch but I am having trouble collecting it from there):

- the texture (I'm finding myself very attracted right now to handfeel, texture, or shape that adds a luxe element to an item)
- the color (I really love anything in the navy / ink color scheme, especially now that I have light blonde streaks)
- the shape (classic but also roomy)
- the length (I wear mostly pants, and this seems a nice length for that)

I guess I am wondering .... is this worth trying? Do I need a longer coat? Should I consider both the Zara and something like this?
