I think the flutter sleeves look fine, but the hemline gives me pause. I see what Angie means about the shorter lining though. Is there a ruffle too? I can’t tell from the photo. If so, it might give off a negligee vibe.
Ok now I’ve talked myself into recommending Return lol. You can do better.

Thanks so much for lending me your eyes! I see now that the problem is not the ruffle or the sleeves but the length! I think my problem area is always my upper body--so much so that I can't see past it. I'm going to try the dress with footwear and see if that changes how I feel in the dress. I think the ruffles and the length are what give me pause--making it seem a little sweet for me or maybe a little too young. Thanks again for sharing your opinions. I will report back after another try on.

I understand the mixed feelings about ruffles and flutter sleeves, they can be too feminine and girly and not sophisticated enough. That being said, I find myself liking these looks right now, not really sure why. In fact I just ordered a few dresses to try for a wedding and they are kind of fluttery. I do think this looks great on you and you could edge it up with the shoes.

I find flutter sleeves tricky too, for a variety of reasons - call attention to my upper arms (YOU don't have that problem, I assure you), can read as a bit sweet. That said, I like this on you in theory because the black tempers the sweetness a bit, which makes the ruffles more wearable. The top half is great. I agree with Angie about the lining, though. I bet you could find something in a similar vein, if you want to.

I can see what Lisa and Roxanna are saying. I struggle with anything ruffled for a similar reason. That said, I bought a dress last summer that has ruffle details and a flutter sleeve, and even though it is not an everyday dress for me and I need to be in the right mood to wear it, I sometimes enjoy having something that reads a little flirtier.

How do you feel in it? Like it simply shows a slightly different side of your style and personality? Or like it’s not authentic to you? I think that’s the key.

I like the silhouette! But the shorter lining ruins the lines to my eye. It would also look more "grown-up" a little longer.

LOVE the flutters sleeves on your shoulder line.

I tend to agree with Lisa...I like this dress but somehow it doesn't seem quite you - it's missing the edge that your dresses with boots outfits of your jeans outfits had. And I agree it feels a little traditional on you. But of course of you love it, keep it.. It definitely looks good, but not what I associate with your usual style...

I like the dress on you. And it sounds like it fills a hole.
In these cases when I'm unsure I picture myself going to my closet when I have the occasion to wear the dress. Do I pick it out and happily put it on? Or do I put it back and pick something else? That helps me decide.

I'm have mixed thoughts . I don't personally care for the look on most women, as it can read old-lady or to view it more positively: vintage-y. It was definitely associated with that 1920's flapper look...
Anyways, it *can* certainly add a feminine aspect to a dress, no argument there, but somehow it doesn't quite strike me as "you". Which means nothing if you like the look, of course The dress itself looks good on you, and softens your shoulder line, but with your fit physique, I'd be tempted to add a softer touch in another way . (like a dramatic low neckline , or a dramatic slit in the skirt). Just thoughts coming out of my bored brain this afternoon while I should be working productively

Kellygirl, like you, I default to sleeveless tops and dresses when the weather turns hot and humid, but, a couple of days ago I happened upon a photo of the Duchess of Cambridge (Catherine) and a collaborator for her garden entry at Chelsea Flower Show. They both were wearing V-neck dresses with flutter sleeves. Now, I'm on the lookout. I think you can definitely carry this look off.

Thank you, Jane, Aquamarine and Joyce! Yes, mostly because it's a departure from my usual default sleeveless style. I just wanted something with sleeves that wasn't tight in the bodice that could be dressy or casual depending on the footwear and topper. I like the sleeves because they collapse and can be worn under anything--I have such an issue getting toppers on over sleeves and my shoulders/arms. It's always so constricting or looks lumpy... I just wasn't sure it looks too ruffly/girly/juvenile.

I'd love your opinion on this sleeved dress style. It's different from anything in my closet. The big draw was that it fills a hole in my dressy capsule, is sleeved, not too fitted and will work for warm weather. I guess I'm looking for reassurance since I usually always default to more fitted sleeveless styles. Does it qualify as JFE? Will add photo from my phone in a bit. Thanks for looking!
