Shiny, that's annoying to actually see your empty box at the kerb, with your stuff stolen! The nerve.

There's a street in my town that has a VERY similar name to the one I live on. Mis-deliveries happen. They used to happen a lot. We'd get their stuff, they'd get ours. In the beginning it was no big deal, we'd just go over and retrieve. But this other house has had a parade of shady renters over the years. We have had issues with past renters opening up the package and keeping the items, then claiming they didn't.... yet the empty box is right there on the curb set out for the trash!

It's gotten much better than it was in the past, after working directly with the post office, and also making a note on every order. Now it only happens once a year, during xmas time, and that's because the post office hires temporary help who doesn't already know the situation.

We've also had packages occasionally get lost in the bushes, or dumped at our basement door (which is just weird to me, since it's obviously not the front door). So we always check those two places first.

This year I only lost one package, at xmas time. The company promptly replaced it without any questions.

Deb, interesting about the insurance. And the need for trackable.
Astrid, how annoying that they don't even knock sometimes! That's just so rude, especially because its their JOB to deliver. They get paid to do it.
Helendith, I've also had letters not delivered as well, including my car rego bill once. It was just by chance that I remembered that it was coming due and looked at the sticker and paid it just before expiry. If I hadn't remembered, and we'd had a crash, yikes! Interesting about the locked box idea.
Kari, what a horrible experience! Good thing you kept an eye on your statement, but it's unsettling to think that there are people out there who would do that.

Among the two dozen items I shopped online during the past year, I only experienced 1 non-delivery from a private sale on e-bay. As payment was made through Paypal, I supposed I was fully protected and that indeed happened. However, when I received my monthly statement of that new VISA (I didn't make any other purchase beside that one), I was shocked to discover 147 transactions from that same company making numerous $35 to $75 daily purchase on my card. I reported the case to VISA and they also noticed another 34 transaction after issuing my last statement with average individual transaction increased to $220! I understand that VISA and Paypal are currently conducting joint investigation but I'm yet receive any explanation. Despite full waiver from VISA, my confidence for on-shopping had already destroyed.

From my above experience, it seems that non-delivery is the last thing you should worry about.

Dimity I am in Western Australia and currently have Aust Post checking missing items - I live in some units and it appears one of the delivery (an overseas parcel) was delivered and they may have left it at my door and someone helped themselves. Aust Post now suggest I book a locked box at the post office for no charge for parcels. I have also had letters not delivered and returned to sender. I have never had difficulties in the past so am thinking these difficulties may be particular to this office or postie. It has made me think seriously about not using online shopping, although I don't do it very often.

I'm glad you're getting is sorted and they were so good about it... I had things lost in the past, but most of the time my orders arrive (sooner or later). I order quite a bit online. I luckily have neighbours who accept parcels for me if I'm not there and I do the same. Otherwise it would be a hassle, because the post office they take my stuff to is rather out of the way for me. I once had something I really wanted to have delivered on time and then two days in the row they stated I hadn't been at home and it went back. And I was at home, waiting for it. I think they just marked it off as recipient not there but didn't even try, to save time on their tour...

Gee Dimity, that is bad luck, but thankfully it is getting sorted. I live in Melbourne and I do order on line from time to time. International orders from the USA ( though rarely now since our dollar has devalued) from Shopbop, Net-a-Porter, Forward and Nordstrom. Interstate from Banjo and Matilda in Sydney and I have never had a parcel go undelivered. Sometimes I am amazed how prompt the service is e.g. on more than one occasion, only 3 days from the USA! Obviously these extra prompt deliveries were cleared immediately at customs. Some of the parcels come via Australia post, others by courier. Either way, all have been trackable. I endeavour to make sure some-one is home when the tracking system gives a date and we know deliveries consistently occur between 0830 and 1000 in our area. This is tricky for people who are at work. If you read company terms and conditions, you'll find they normally have insurance to cover the parcel until it is signed for at your door.

I don't mind having to pick up the parcel normally, but it's a 30km round trip and once they considered a big envelope a 'parcel', which was such a waste of time for me. You're right though, in that it feels more secure than it being left somewhere, exposed to anyone going past.

Dimity, thats great that you won't loose out and that the company is doing the right thing. I actually prefer my parcels to be delivered to the Post Office :) For some reason, I feel a little more secure. But my PO is only minutes from home

Deborah, it was from Woolovers, a knitwear company. They have been very good about it and once it's been 20 working days from dispatch (nearly there now), they'll send me a form and I have to fill it out and return it and they'll send me the missing items. But they didn't have tracking on the parcels. I asked, and they can't trace them. That may be because it was a free shipping offer but I don't know. I hope my Dad's cardigan arrives in time for his 80th birthday! Next time, I'll pay the $30 for courier shipping just for peace of mind.

I'm glad to hear that you've never had any problems. It restores my faith in the system somewhat. There are so many negative things said about Australia Post parcel service (eg that they never actually bring the parcel to you, you have to go to the post office to pick it up even though you're at home. They don't want to come to the door and waste time actually knocking!)

Dimity, I want to ask who you ordered from:) I order on line quite a lot these days. But mostly within Australia. I never have trouble receiving my packages. My sister orders from the UK quite a lot and no trouble either. What is their shipping policy? Someone has to be responsible and everyone I order from has tracking and updates me regularly on the progress of my order. My belief is that it is their responsibility until it is received by you.

Thanks for sharing your stories. Three weeks from Denver to New Jersey - ugh! And the fabric too, how inconsiderate was that neighbour. I'm hoping mine might be stuck at customs, but I'm not holding out much hope. It seems that most companies are pretty good about issues with shipping, judging from the conversation here, which gives one more confidence to shop online. I might insist on tracking or pay for couriers in the future, though.

I do a lot of shopping online, and only had a problem with the delivery one time. UPS delivered a package of fabric, and because I was not home, had my upstairs neighbor sign for it. The trouble was, the neighbor was a young, extremely problematic young woman who stuck the package with several hundred dollars worth of fabric in her closet, and just left it there. I found out it was delivered two weeks later by calling UPS, and had to harass my neighbor to claim it back. When I got it the packing was damaged, the fabric had been opened, and it reeked of cigarette smoke. About half the fabric was unsalvageable.

I had a lot of trouble getting compensation. The seller felt it was UPS's fault, but UPS considered the seller their client, not me, so I could not file a claim with them. I ended up getting a partial refund from the seller, but only after I gave her a negative review.

Fortunately, the neighbor is now GONE! And I haven't had any other packages go missing. I figure one out of many isn't too bad.

I've never had any major problems with domestic orders, but have run into problems abroad ordering from the US. Sometimes, items are delayed at customs without your knowing, or they simply disappear, like in your case. I'm glad the company is sending out another package.

So sorry that this happened.

Fortunately I've never had an order or a return go missing. My area has moved to community mailboxes (Canada is phasing out home delivery) and as much as I dislike this system it's nice that my packages that come via Canada Post are securely locked up. Previously, the mailman would just leave them on the front step. I get fewer packages from UPS and FedEx but they usually open my storm door and stick them between the doors.

My shopping is almost exclusively done online. Most of the items are domestic shipping, but I do occasionally order internationally.
So far no lost packages. My international orders usually have tracking too.
The only package I have ever been nervous about was a pair of Valentino shoes that I returned to Barneys just before Christmas. It took over three weeks from Denver to New Jersey.

Oh, Dimity - sorry your packages went missing! And I am glad you will get the items eventually anyway.

I think INTERNATIONAL online shopping is a whole different species from in-country online shopping. I suspect if you ordered from a company in Oz, your results might be better (assuming a reputable company, of course.)

I am in Canada. I have only ordered from outside North America a few times. So far, I have been lucky with that, although shipping times are difficult to estimate.

I regularly order online from Canada and (a bit less often) from the US. I have had the occasional package go missing. I've also had a return go missing, but fortunately it was a return to Nordstrom's and there was tracking so they could easily see that I was not to blame for it -- it was the delivery company who misplaced it.

I order way too much stuff online. The only thing that didn't arrive was a faucet that FedEx's temporary Christmas help lied about delivering because I was home at the time. Otherwise, in the past year I have probably had an average of one package per week delivered.

I live in a neighborhood that is supposedly safe enough for FedEx and UPS not to require a signature for delivery. I am very friendly with my UPS guy, and he always knocks at my window or door so I can tell when a substitute delivers since he/she tends to get lazy and doesn't take the package up to the top of my 44 steps. I have taken to following the tracking info so I know the day things will arrive.

Most of my packages are from Nordstrom, and I make all my returns at the store. I once had a return to Zappos lost (four pairs of shoes!!!) but they were very nice about giving me my refund.

I've never shopped online for clothes before, but I decided to get a few things from an English company (I'm in Australia). They're big, and reputable, and I have no problems with them, but of the three parcels in my order (the order was divided to keep each package under 2kg for the cheapest postage, I believe), I only received one. There was no tracking in place so they could have got 'lost' anywhere. They will resend me the missing items, so that's not a problem.

I was just wondering, as many people here shop online regularly, what your experience has been with parcels not arriving? Do you use post or courier? Do you find things go missing? Does it make a difference if the packaging has writing on it that advertises the contents?
