I'm also farther away from shopping areas, although it would be very easy to make a day of it and go sometime. I like to research what I need to buy on an online wish list, labeled by months for my budget, and then look at online sites. Like Ana said, after a time you'll be able to spot the different cuts of clothing or styles you like from different retailers and buy more efficiently. If you find a retailer that ships for free, you can buy more than you intend to keep, try things on and compare, then send back what doesn't fit or isn't a good color.

I would love to shop in store more but it seems like whenever i pre shop online and go to the store to try it on, it's never there or it's never there in my size :(
Thus i do a lot of my shopping online, only at store that have a decent return policy. A lot of times if i don't like something i return in-store but i'm usually pretty good at getting my size right.

No J. Crew? The horror! :D

Becky gives some great advice. I like to shop online, but primarily at places that I can do in store returns and save myself the time and cost of shipping the item back. I usually order from places that I know my size and am familiar with their sizing, fabric, fit, quality, etc.

Maybe what you can do is primarily shop online (check for codes as Becky suggested), and then if something doesn't work out, save it up and once a month head to the mall and do some in store returns. After a while, you will become familiar with your favorite brands and you will be able to look at a lot of things online and tell whether they will work for you (not always, but you do get better at it). I have to make very few returns when I order online now compared to when I first started.

I do buy a lot online because the mall in my town is ridiculous. The two anchors at my local mall are Sears and JCPenny. There is no BR, no JCrew, and a very small Macy's--too small to consider it an anchor.

I like to shop at Gap, BR, AT and ATL, Esprit and NY and Co--for online. I like to shop at Marshalls too.

I do most of my shopping online as I live in a rural area and the closest really good shopping is 5 hours away. Many stores offer free shipping with a minimum amount purchased, either as a permanent policy or a temporary promotion (e.g., Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft), but the return shipping is usually on your dime. However, if you have to exchange an item, sometimes the shipping is free (e.g., Nordstrom). Some merchants have free shipping and returns (e.g., Zappos), which is *very* nice. Do your homework to find out where the best deals can be had, and also google the retail name + coupons or free shipping before ordering to find and coupon codes that may be valid when you make your order.

Do most of you do your shopping at the actual stores? I'm curious because the closest mall I have near me is over an hour away and I NEVER get to go without children in tow. I'm curious about what the return policy is at your favorite store? Is it free shipping on returns if the item doesn't work or do you just forfeit the shipping as a perk of shopping from home?

Thanks!
