Great post and attitude!

I have had a similar experience plus some lessons learned and learning.

When after some ( non- tragic) injuriy and related problems I gained a few # that was enough to change fit and sizing of part of my wardrobe.

The BEST thing was to try everything on and be ruthless, or kind, in terms of " to myself" as to removing from main closet what I could not wear confidently RIGHT now.
Before that I was more in panic mode and at risk of buying things in larger size or style.
But when I did finally review what DOEs fit, and that includes new or limited combinations- (maybe some pants are still comfortable because they have stretch but I will only wear with specific tops.) -- it's clear I have plenty to wear.
I don't feel I have to wait until some weight loss or exercise fitness may or may not occur, to buy new things, BUT I did relax and realize I don't need any" placeholders" just to have more options. Anything new should be because it's BETTER in major ways than something I have.
For example, the high-waist wide- leg are a new fun silhouette but I got the ines that fit well, are lovely wool suiting fabric. The Theory tuxedo pants replace some AT pants that were the closest thing I had to slim dressy pants but were crawling up my legs when I got up & down and were annoying me.

I think also I'm looking outside the usual stores as certain brands aren't fitting yet I'd be tempted to buy out of habit.

LisaP, I am happy overall. I can't say I'm delighted about the weight gain in particular, but in the grand scheme of things it's no crisis. I might feel differently if literally nothing in my closet fit! But as it is, the previously snug clothes are now too tight and the previously loose ones now fit correctly. I don't have to replace anthing -- yet. I don't think I'm going to like buying "placeholder" cheap-n-cheerful pants if I outgrow my current ones. :-)

Cynthia, it's true that we are happier when we focus on positives rather than negatives. Thanks for mentioning it.

shevia, haha, exactly. It might be tempting to go out and buy more stuff to fill my closet -- but I'm not gonna. Swear. x

Deb, I love your attitude (and also your comment about your "replaceable" lover!). This is SO true. I find I have a different outlook on life since my mom died. Life is for the living, right? I am not ill. My mind is intact. I have a kind, loving husband and sweet, funny, intelligent children. We work hard but we laugh every day. I have a privileged life. I refuse to care about not fitting into pants I bought five years ago. :-)

Thanks for the kind words, Cocolion! And swim cover-ups always look great -- and I love how you can adjust the fit no matter how much your waistline changes!

Thanks, Sally :-)

Azriaphale I love your glass is half full take on weight gain. I have been wearing the same 3 jeans and assorted sweaters and sweatshirts. The Ugg boots aren't just worn in the house anymore, sadly. The farm fashionista is in a farm frump phase. Getting dressed is indeed simpler! I'm going on vacation soon and am brining all of my track style bottoms from a few years ago, because with an elastic waist they fit. I predict the purchase of many swim cover-ups (hoping to swim in them too, as my mid-section is not for public consumption any more).

Well, I gained al the menopausal (and medicine related) weight and learned to love my body and find clothes to fit. Then I went through a divorce and lost a whole bunch of weight. I have gained between 3 and 5 pounds back but all the clothing I purchased last year still fit. I do not recommend divorce as a weight loss strategy. But, through all these weight ups and downs I have come to accept my age and my aging body. I have found some women gain and others lose as the body metabolically changes. I look at my grandmothers, mom, aunts and cousins and see the same weight patterns. I also see that the loss of weight in these women mean severe illness, mostly cancer, so am happy where I am. Besides, I am tired of fighting with my body and want to enjoy life now and my lover (yes, your read that right) is happy with my body the way it is. ( really does not matter, anyway. He can be replaced, lol.) What is important, is that I am happy. No, my body is not where it used to be but I am still alive and many of my family and friends, much younger than me, are not.

Yeah, this is my project for this coming weekend. Trying on every pair of pants I own and staring them down. Either they fit right now, or they are being put away. I suspect I'm going to be left with a fair bit of closet room after this exercise. The big question I have though is......at what point do you start replacing ? And I don't mean buying cheap and cheerful pants (or whatever your item in question may be) to wear in the meantime. My closet is now filled with cheap and cheerful pants - which are not cheering me up . I am adamant that I will lose a ton of weight , but it ain't happenin. What's the timeline on letting it go?
If you are happy, you are 10 steps ahead of the rest of us who have put on some lbs lately. Good on you.

Hah, Janet, glad to hear I'm not alone! Did the "holding zone" make you feel unexpectedly calmer?

I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't hoping to lose the excess, too -- but I'm being very firm with myself that it's not a necessity. If I'm permanently one size fatter, so be it. I am happy. I've been under a lot of stress for a year, I quit exercising, and I've eaten and imbibed waaaay to much over the holidays (they drink A LOT in England!), so maybe it'll come off once I get back to my normal diet and exercise level. If not, well, most of the stuff that no longer fits is older stuff anyway. And I suppose I can't expect to stay a tiny size forever...after all, I'm in my mid-forties now.

Sally, that's true about the washing -- mind you, I still have more than enough to get me through a month without washing a single thing (except undergarments).

Heh, today I've put all of my skirts except one and some of my pants in my holding zone, largely for this reason. I am hoping to lose the excess, and will re-evaluate all those items later. I never seem to wear skirts other than in the summer anyway, so it frees up some room.

What with overindulging this past Christmas and a new medication I'm on that makes me hungry, I've suddenly discovered that a whole lot of clothes (pants and skirts, mostly) are uncomfortably tight. At first I was annoyed, but it turns out there is an unexpected upside: getting dressed is suddenly very low-stress. Last weekend I spent a half hour going through my bottoms and putting the too-tight ones up on a high shelf, out of the way. I would say about a quarter of my pants and nearly half of my skirts are temporarily "on hold" (or who knows, maybe forever!), which leaves me with -- to my surprise -- a more manageable closet. I guess I did have too much in there.

I'm not advocating gaining a pile of weight to help you pare down your wardrobe, of course. I also imagine that gaining weight could cause a whole lot of stress, if suddenly nothing fits. But while in general I don't like getting fatter, at least in this case there is a silver lining.
