Angie: Thanks for the encouragement and the HK comparison. I just lived all of Greg's photos.

quiet girl, AM: It's fun that everyone loves the skirt so much. It was a bit of an afterthought! I guess sometimes it's good not to overthink things and just have fun.

Aida: I'm a huge fan of high pony tails! I think my hair is too short to even use pins (it's cut an inch long underneath) but maybe I could try flat ironing those pieces. It's tricky because my curl wants to come through at that length. I'll play with it, though.

Love it with the skater skirt. Feels very fresh -- and LIVELY. Nice descriptor. I totally understand where you are coming from when you put something together -- and as you put it "doesn't feel very creative." But the skater skirt feels inventive with this large scale pattern. Nice job. And what a great challenge. I can see how this would push creativity. #5 is a rocking pattern. Great find.

Have to run but am chiming in quickly to say how great it is to see you post, Meredith. Killer pullover, and all three renditions are fab. #1 is very Hong Kong. LOVE your hair in #1 too.

Gotcha on the headband. How about the high pony with a little clip to pin the flyaway bits back? I'm still stuck on the spunky high pony

kellygirl, Keturah: I like the version with the pencil skirt and would wear it again, but it's not my favorite. It somehow feels prim, or maybe I just really enjoy the flounce of the skater skirt and the pencil skirt feels dull in comparison. Will have to think on it!

Keturah: Thanks for the alternate tucking idea. I will give it a try next time! Yeah, the shorts looks seemed like such a good idea in theory, but I think the length of the shorts the opacity of the tights was wrong. I can try again when it's warm enough to conceivably wear shorts.

Aida: Thanks for the suggestions about shorts, pushing the sleeves, etc. I will try to play around with the concept. The shorts I tried were both two lightweight and too long and I didn't even consider scrunching the sleeves. And re: the headband. It was kind of a disaster. My hair is cut really short underneath the longer layers, so I needed something to keep those pieces in place. I put on the headband without really giving myself a good look in the mirror. Later in the day I realized I belonged in an 80's workout video. Oh well! Was just playing with a toddler, so no big deal.

rachylou: It was a fun challenge and a good excuse to wear the sweater more often. I wore it more this week than I have in the last few months!

Love the skater skirt rendition the best. It's more unexpected and lively than the others, and just seems to suit your energy better. Of the geometric tees, I like the long-sleeved one and am curious to see how it would look on. Something about the scale and movement of the pattern seems more appealing than the first one.

All three renditions looks good! I'm partial to the last with the skinnies and the side semi-tuck, hip curve most definitely included (I see nothing weird! But I understand.). With that one I think a spunky high pony sans headband would be really fun. Also quite fond of the first with the skater skirt, the flare providing a little ruffle-effect as you said adds some unexpected playfulness. The pencil skirt version is nice, just more classic looking than the other two.

Regarding trying the tunic with shorts, there are two factors there that would help with the seasonal confusion. First, the weight of the shorts. If they're a heavier weight, or even a thicker all-season weight, that's best. If they're lighter then you have do add some other "lightness" to the look, such as pushing up your sleeves, putting your hair up, semi-tucking from the front, and maybe adding light tights (like nude fishnets).

Love it with the skater skirt! It really makes it look youthful and flirty and interesting.

Concerning the partial tuck on 3... as a fellow hip-ster (hehe ) I would maybe try a front partial tuck or faux tuck. I find it is very flattering for the hips because the curve it can create is similar to a curved hem, which is superbly flattering in minimizing hips.
http://youlookfab.com/2013/09/.....rsus-faux/
A couple posts from Angie:

http://youlookfab.com/2008/12/.....-cardigan/

http://youlookfab.com/2012/08/.....-hem-tops/

Number 2 is nice and classic, with a bit of "punch" from the geometric sweater and the booties. What isn't your favorite about it?

4 would be superb for s/s! 5 is nice too, I like the cropped length and I think it would look great on you!

I actually would have liked to see the shorts+tights+booties with the sweater! It sounds really fun!

Hello Lovely Ladies!

In a recent thread I started, many of you spoke of the difficulty taking pictures in the winter, the overall fatigue of winter clothing, a desire to talk about spring purchases, and the need for some dressing challenges. I share your winter blahs!

To shake things up I’m challenging myself to wear one piece three different ways throughout the week. I always enjoy this type of feature in a magazine, I need to break away from my very basic/obvious outfits, and I like the added challenge to make pieces work across a variety of polished casual and casual situations. I think this will help me identify whether the same types of clothes can work for my daily life or whether I need to add some blouses, skirts, etc.

So, here is piece #1. I happened to be wearing it when I imagined this scheme, so I decided I might as well start with real life. It’s a geometric sweater tunic that I picked up from a thrift shop. I love the bold print and it’s a cozy wool/angora blend perfect for our cold temperatures. I think it would look a smidge more modern if if was a bit more oversized, but I still like it.

Look 1

This is my default combination with this sweater. Black ponte pants and tall equestrian boots. Not exactly creative, so I added a flared skater skirt (my skirted legging cheat) to add just a bit of ruffle and length at the bottom. I loved the feel of the skirt (it really is a butt vest!) and would wear this again (keeping in mind that we have thoroughly established the skirted legging look is not appropriate for all situations).

Look 2

A dressier version. Sweater tunic with tweed pencil skirt and tights. I like this look, but it’s not my favorite way to wear the pencil skirt or the sweater. It almost feels too prim.

Look 3

Another standard combination. Sweater, skinny jeans, and booties. Because you all know what a sweater and skinnies looks like, I decided to try a semi-tuck with the sweater to create a faux asymmetrical top. Not such a fan of this look on me. The tuck makes the pattern look strange and emphasizes the curve of my hip in a way I find kind of weird. BUT, I think this look would be great with a solid, dark tunic. And I think it would be better on people with a more subtle curve of the hip.

In conclusion, I prefer look 1 (with and without the skirt). This combination is probably the most basic and obvious, but the bold print keeps things just interesting enough for me.

Looking Ahead to Spring

One of the days of this challenge the weather warmed up significantly and I started thinking about whether a heavy t-neck can transition to spring. I tried it over shorts+tights+booties and also with white boyfriend pants and a trench. These looks seemed seasonally confused and not worth positing. Instead, I’d rather find a new geometric top for spring and summer. Maybe one of the DKNY tops.

Thanks for reading this novel. All feedback is welcome. If you have a sweater tunic/dress I encourage you to experiment the next time you wear it!
