Lots of wisdom here thanks everyone! Maybe I should have a look at at some white jeans now, so they could get some spring wear.

I do wonder with Suz if the cropped flares might be a hard look for my body type and not worth trying

Maneera I have been tempted to get some black jeans too. It is a thought and would definitely be an easier and more flattering choice than white jeans but I also wonder if they are just a bit too similar to dark blue jeans, of which I have three, to make them the best use of my "one pair"

I thought I would try white last winter but could not handle the upkeep in the slush and snow. They are limited seasonal item for me, and even though I have over thirty pairs of jeans, only 3 of them are white. I rarely wear them in the summer. It has to be a cool enough day for jeans, but dry also. If you have better weather, than go for it. Otherwise, I suggest picking one of your favorite neutral colors other than white, and whatever style in a long Jean that flatters you most.

I like the idea of white jeans for you... Mixed with cozy cream jumpers and so forth. Winter pastels, that is. Hmm... what *do* you have that you'd wear with white jeans?

What about slim straight-legs? They'd be an update for the skinnies but also pretty versatile, which I think cropped/flares wouldn't be. Or a colored pair to replace your wine skinnies, in any shape that you think you'd wear - burgundy is still very current but other colors would work too. I agree with Maneera that black jeans are nice to have around, to fill that "nicer than blue jeans, almost like a pair of trousers" niche.

I love white jeans and own 3, but I highly recommend a pair of black jeans since you'll be buying when winter begins. Nothing is as versatile and practical in winters as black jeans: in my book! A slim straight leg or fitted BF jeans may be perfect for your style and lifestyle, as these are good with all kinds of boots too.

The new kick flares are fun but I wouldn't buy a pair if I needed a really great upgrade; I think for those with our body type (longer torso, shorter legs) they will be harder to style.

White is a great option especially since you have light hair. But if it is too hot to wear jeans in summer, then I would consider how many months you will actually have for wearing them. I do wear white (or at least cream) jeans in winter as Angie suggests, but I have to admit that I much prefer optic white in spring or fall weather (moderate temps/ different quality of light). If you have several months of that type of weather, they might prove really useful to you. If not, you might not get much wear from them.

(Note: Even though I don't wear jeans in our high summer, I still get enough wear from my white jeans that I bought a second pair. And I also have two pairs of white shorts for summer wear.)

I guess I would think about whether I am getting a yearly pair to allow for "fresh looks" or to replace wardrobe workhorses. For example, it sounds like the relaxed skinnies got a lot of use and might be up for replacement, either exact (color, style) or a denim wash skinny to have a different silhouette from the bootcuts.
You could also do "retail reseach" on the cropped flares and see if the style really appeals to you and if they mix with your footwear and tops. Then if they're still going strong next year you might want them.
If you're not wearing jeans in summer because it's too hot, white jeans won't help with that. So then you might decide whether you think you're a white jeans gal for outfits in general and would like to create a capsule for your jeans-workday opportunities.
For longevity I think of excellent-fitting, not-too-flared bootcuts, and some form of skinny or the relaxed skinny , with the length depending on footwear preferences. For example, I get more versatility from a style that can be worn full-length, scrunched, with flats (and often socks, in winter!) , or rolled just above ankle, with same flats or slip-on sneakers, for milder weather. If you are a big tucker-into-boots, then you would want a skinnier fit through the calf and ankle than I look for.

I think white would be a fun addition. I wear mine pretty much all year long except for slushy days. We're just heading into fall here and I really like the look of them with darker khaki and olive greens.

You will be buying these going into winter and would want to start wearing them. Instead of a bright white, you might like an ivory or cream shade of white. In winter I wear black jeans quite a bit. Another thought is a faded light blue but not distressed. The color looks wonderful with black, brights and pastels.

I think you should go to the shops and experiment. Cropped flairs are likely to be a trend for the next year or so, and given jeans don't last much beyond this, I would not be put off by the "fashion" nature of them if you like the look on you. I remember thinking that about skinnies years ago - and I was completely wrong! Cropped flairs work well with higher shaft boots for winter, so depending upon what you have in your closet, they may work for you all year round. Having said that, white jeans look so fresh and work well in all seasons. I have a young child and dog, so my white jeans are constantly being washed (muddy paw prints are not the best fashion accessory) - but I persevere regardless.

I also add a pair a year usually - this year 2,but this was almost two for one at Just Jeans. I am thinking my next pair will have a flare, cropped or full length. Worth trying on white, I am not sure that white is for me but I love them on others.

If you are looking to buy in May, are the white and cropped flare options practical? I only say that because we will be heading into winter so you may not get much wear out of them until later in the year. I know a lot of people are over skinnies but I still find them by far the most practical option for winter. I got a lot of wear out of my (new) grey skinnies this last winter but I am not sure whether this is a colour that appeals to you. Do BF jeans appeal? Have you considered coated jeans eg in black or another colour?

I usually only buy one pair of jeans a year, if that. I don't wear them 3 days a week (for work) or for a good few months in summer so they are not an everyday use item for me.

I currently own *
2 dark denim bootcuts (one hemmed for flats and one for heels)
Wine relaxed skinnies (2 years old and much worn - may not last much longer)
dark blue almost jegging skinnies (bought this year)

Am wondering what to buy next year. Am kind of thinking of taking the plunge and buying a white pair, but was intrigued also by the cropped flare look Angie recently blogged about.

OTOH, since I don't buy many, and hope for longevity, is it silly to buy what could be a passing fashion.

Would love to hear your thoughts. It isn't an urgent question as I am unlikely to buy before around May 2016, - just thinking ahead to next years budgeting priorities.

*I also own a pair of straightlegged darkish jeans, but they don't fit at the moment.
