Ok! I am here and reading avidly! You guys have made me think... And I'm grateful. Because I didn't think at all about the how. I don't think I'll be able to recognise any item by a description I write down. This is something that has thwarted me in the past trying to list my clothes.

I wonder if I can do pics. It will take some organsation, labeling and sorting pics into folders for me to find items, which may also thwart me. That's effort. Lol. I don't do effort. I may have to back this up with a laundry pen to the label...

I did this last year, with a new page each month in a Moleskin journal (I really like the tactile). Item, date, and (yes, Suz) cost; also, whether or not it was on sale. It was really helpful to see how many items I purchased each month and where the money went. Of course, I am now in a no-buy month, so you see where that led me! I'm going to do it again this year, to help manage my own impulses.

This month, as part of my closet remix, I am trying to document in my WIWs the approximate age of each item I am wearing. My suspicion is that my entire wardrobe has turned over in the last couple of years, but it will help to look at each outfit and figure out how it came together. I don't exactly know what I am going to learn -- how much longevity I have? -- but it's a way to keep me engaged and busy while I am not buying in January.

This sounds great Rachy, as someone who has to think to remember her age and longs for simplicity, I may try writing the purchase date on the inside label using one of the clothing markers I use on the girls school uniform!

Great idea Rachy. I am a memory person and also have a great memory but I am getting to that age when.......shudder. I have a Pinterest board for purchases that are online but so few of my clothes are online. What does that say! I have tried to use finds on YLF and have been unsuccessful (hangs head in shame). Maybe it is because my laptop is like a tablet. Or because I am so computer advanced. NOT!
I keep written journals and find that is what works best for me. I write with a pen and paper best.

I'm a memory person too - mainly because I have a good chronological memory and can usually remember, at least to within 2 years, when I bought something (more precisely for recent purchases).

I also have a Pinterest board for the items I bought that are available online. I never thought about using it to determine age, but that's a great idea. I mostly do it because I want to have pictures for wardrobe planning, collages or something similar. I think keeping a closer look would definitely be interesting. I know that some items feel much older to me than they really are, because I'm wearing them so often.

Harmonica, I just write outs on the left and ins on the right, for the month. It's all I can manage! I try to include everything even socks, belt etc because It's a great visual if the column of ins starts moving down length of the page!
For a good edit month the outs may have to be double- columned. I don't number them, but I can count if I want to!

I rely both on picture, like Suz and Beth Ann, and memory (don't make fun of me - I am famous for remembering the most trivial things).
When an item looks tired I recall when it was bought. If it lasted 4-5 years I let it go without guilt. If it was last year's I wow to not purchase that brand again.
My oldest items are from 2010, excluding vintage stuff

You're going to be glad you made this resolution. I've done this for a couple years. I keep a closet inventory in Evernote and jot down the month and year of purchase, along with the price. I've found it helps me with culling decisions--if I've had something for at least a year and, better yet, didn't pay a lot for it--I can pass it on without guilt, which is worth a lot! It's also enlightening to see how many things I purchase in one year, and in which categories (shades of Deb's thread).

I buy almost all my clothing online, so as soon as I order, I make a note in my Google contact in some type of notes section. I record both the original price and what I paid. Since I return almost as much as I order, it is easy to delete items. I also go back and add asterisks to items that were mistakes. I suppose I could also add some type of symbol to items that turned out to be workhorses, but sometimes how I feel about somethings changes by the week.

Hi Rachylou. You might not be testing "how dated" you are so much as "how often your wardrobe turns over." The vast majority of my wardrobe was purchased in 2014/2015.

I use a tracking spreadsheet that was graciously given to me by a YLF forum member. It works amazingly well. It took some time to populate, but that type of thing relaxes me. I thoroughly endorse tracking this type of information.

I have started keeping track at least three times and each time my efforts diminish I think I need to find a better tracking method.

I wonder what would happen if I put all my receipts in a big envelope and then when the mood strikes and I'm feeling real motivated, I would write everything down and store the list in the envelope. Then I would gather more receipts and if the mood struck again I could record them again on the list that I had previously stored in that envelope. I just have to keep track of the envelope and remember to put the receipts there every time I shop.

Maybe? Maybe not? Sounds cumbersome perhaps?

Oh, another idea! I could tape the receipts to my paper calendar which has fewer uses now than in the past. I would always have them, unless the tape comes loose, so maybe staples would be better?!

I never throw out my calendars, do you? I confess to being a calendar hoarder!

OK Rachy, you're more creative than me, what method are you going to use to keep track?

This is low- tech Luddite , but I have a small hardcover journal and use a page each month for both " ins" and " outs".
It lasts several years so can look back, can see approx whether I'm gaining or shrinking, can help recall, now where is that sweater-- oops, gave it away. Or what items or brands seem to get tossed, or hang on. Left side of page is for " out" and goal is for column to be bigger than right hand side!

Good luck!!

I have been keeping rough track. I don't always remember at the time but if I take photos of items then I can go back and count. :)

I don't keep track of the cost however. That would be too painful. :)

I read "nothing" instead of "noting". LOL. Noting is good. If you do note, read and reread.
