Shiny, I like your term "out and about after work" capsule. That is pretty much what I'm aiming for. Only I don't mind if I don't look like I just came from work- when you work in a hospital, people are happier if they think you've changed your clothes!

I'm eager to see how you fill that capsule, too!

Rae, there's a great tool on Photoshop called "replace color" that makes it pretty easy- although I don't really know how to do it well. Kind of fun if you want to virtually change your outfit to see how it will look, though.

Thanks for the explanation, Parsley -- context is everything!

I have a personal aversion to orange because it's not a color that works on me, but I have set that aside and the orange jacket has totally grown on me. I think it works on you. I will reserve final judgment until I see the cobalt.

I am following your threads with particular interest because with my lifestyle I've had to develop the "casual yet polished and maybe a bit funky" and get that down pat. DH and I have an active social life, since I work at home (telecommute) when the day is over I'm craving social interaction so we go out and about. This is only going to increase now that the kids are off to college in a few weeks. I spend more on my "out and about after work" capsule than my work capsule. I don't know if this is your issue, but for weeknight going out I try to achieve the "I just came from work and swapped accessories to make it going-out appropriate" effect. That is my own sensitivity to the fact I work at home -- whereas the people we meet up with are coming from the office. Does that make sense?

I will stay tuned with interest!

When the blue one arrives I'll have an orange vs. cobalt show-down!

I love you in both the orange and the blue jackets! I don't care for the 1st skirt and the chevron one is just ok imo. Maybe the short boots are throwing off the look for me.

Ooh, you have both colors now!

I loved the orange from the word go, and I still think it brightens up your face more than the blue. It is so hard for me to disagree with Angie, but that is what I see - I suppose it could be a matter of my computer monitor? In any case, I still am firmly on Team Orange.

Shiny, you may be onto something with the booties. This is a new look for me, so I don't think I have the proportions figured out yet.
I have some other booties that are more ankle height. I can try them and see if they are better. I'll post pictures later.

As far as the jacket, you may have missed my recent leather jacket thread. First of all, I have a black leather jacket that I really like, so I'm looking for a different color. I tried at least 10 different leather jackets in various shades, and the orange one was my favorite. I'm not against a tan, cognac, or burgundy color, but I also like the idea of a fun bright color to wear over all my black and denim. I prefer leather to pleather, and I'm OK with paying what it takes to get one that I love.

Thanks for your continuing help! I'll try to post some more pictures soon.

Parsley, Deborah nailed it: the booties are hitting your calf not your ankle, and that's what's not working for my eye.

I also haven't been able to get the booties+skirt look to work, because I can't find the right booties. Those that hit at ankle tend to rub into my ankle -- maybe they work okay with socks to prevent chafing, but not with tights.

The hunt continues... I have been on the hunt for about 3 years now. I'm not giving up quite yet.

I'm also going to throw this out there: if you are investing in leather jacket, I think you will get far more bang for your buck with a neutral color. Unless, of course, you already have a jacket or two in a neutral. I may be totally biased here, as I said on your other thread, I prefer my leather in natural colors that animals actually come in. But if you are looking for versatility and a jacket that will play with a lot of things in your closet, brown, black, cream, butter, tan will go a longer way.

I have a butter leather jacket (works nice with blonde hair), a black cropped moto jacket in pleather (which if I could replace with real leather I'd do so a heart beat... still on the hunt there), and a white pleather (which is my most versatile). My daughter and I share a pleather jacket in a muted shade of blue. This is a fun jacket, it just doesn't get nearly as much wear as the others. If I was going to get orange or cobalt, I'd stick to pleather and a "fun" price rather than drop too many $$ on it.

Just my two cents...

Thanks for your comments, Jeanne and Deborah!
Interesting!
I have kept the chevron skirt, which BTW costs less than 1/4 of the price of the Rachel Roy, so that's something big in its favor.
I'm trying the next size up on the RR skirt, just to see if that makes a difference, because I really love that skirt and would like for it to work, too.

I've ordered the blue jacket, which unfortunately is more expensive and not on sale, but if really is more versatile and better for the long run I'm willing to pay the difference. I'm also still looking around and trying to be the 3 Ps, but patience is not one of my best virtues!

I really appreciate your opinions- I truly value and trust your style instincts and judgment!

I have not read the comments (cos there is a lot and I didn't want to be swayed), so,
I really like the Chevron skirt on you. Fit is good and I am not sure exactly why, but it just looks 'better' than the other skirt, which for the record, i love. I think ankle boots would work, however the boots you have on are more calf height than ankle to my eye. I think that is why the proprotions are not working for you. I like both jackets but the blue is quite electrifying (in a good way). The orange works for me too, however I find the blue to be a more edgy look.

Now off to check others thoughts.

Admittedly I did not read all the comments, but my 2 cents is I prefer the Halogen skirt and a blue jacket. I still think the style is gorgeous and I love the orange, but for longterm (and I know how much it cost) I prefer something less trendy. Blush, black or the blue would be my call.

Shiny, thanks so much for your thoughtful comments! You have some great ideas, so now I have my "homework" cut out for me in experimenting with your suggestions.
It really helps to have another person's ideas, because I tend to get stuck in a rut in how I combine the pieces in my wardrobe.

I hear you about the booties. I'm not at all sure about this look- I must admit that I have never yet worn booties with a skirt, so I don't know if that look will work for me at all. Maybe at my age it's not the time to start, but I'm trying to experiment with new things and keep an open mind. I'm going to trust in YLF to keep me in line if something doesn't work.

Thanks again for taking the time to give me such detailed suggestions, I really appreciate it!

I love all the pieces on you, but I'm not sure I like them together.

This may just be me -- I haven't been able to get the bootie/skirt look to work yet. The booties are adorable and I'd wear those to death with slacks. For skirts, I'm just not crazy about how high on the ankle they are hitting you. I think it may be more leg lengthening to have a bootie that hits lower? Then again I may be overly picky about such things, since my legs are short.

You are looking for bold color -- what about adding it in the top rather than the jacket? You are wearing a lot of black and I'm wanting to see you in a top that's not black with these skirts. Orange or cobalt would work, white would also work. Or a denim shirt since you want to make it less corporate and more casual.

What happens when you tuck the tops into the skirts? I'd like to see the tops hit a bit higher (where the jacket is hitting on your hip), or tucked in. If that's too "va-voom" for casual night out, try a boyfriend length sweater?

If I was going for casual, funky night out, I'd wear the RR skirt with knee-high, flat black boots. Flats to me tend to read casual. I'd layer black micro-fishnets over cobalt blue tights if I was feeling especially funky: the layering gives it a subtle effect. Then I'd wear a denim shirt tucked in at the waist, with a gray boyfriend sweater layered over it. Or perhaps I'd go with a simple, basic white cotton tee tucked in with a jean jacket over it. Somehow I'd bring denim into the look since it is the quickest way to read "casual." I'd then bring a splash of color in with a purse, in orange or cobalt.

Or maybe I'd find a cozy oversized sweater in a bright splash of color and partially tuck it in the front -- or not. Go for the slouchy on top look, svelte on bottom. The leather jacket might then work because you'd have the contrast of textures. Cozy sweater with leather.

You do not have to wear a black top with these skirts -- that's what makes them so versatile. You don't need to wear a white top either. A soft grey would work. Any bold color would work too. You could also wear it with the beiges that are so in style right now, if those work for you.

Just some brain storming for you -- I think you have chosen excellent, versatile pieces. I wouldn't give up on any of them yet. I would love to see that orange jacket paired with plaid wool drapey slacks in shades of brown. That could be interesting! Do you wear earth tones? That orange could really liven up an earth tone outfit. Now that I think of it, if you do wear earth tones, then the orange may prove to be far more versatile than the cobalt. There's so much beige in the stores right now. I would love to see the orange leather jacket paired somewhere with leopard print *something.*

I agree with Angie because I think the full effect of the skirt panel is lost if it's not worn longer. Otherwise, I much prefer the RR. I actually love both the orange and the cobalt on you, but I think the cobalt is a better winter color.

I don't think that the length of the RR skirt is too short in general. Not at all, Marcy. But for the price and for this level of quality - that skirts needs to be 100%. The shorter length is taking away from the elegance of the skirt somehow. Perhaps it's the way you are standing and the angle of the photo - but that's what I see at the moment. FWIW :)

You are welcome to take more photos!

Thanks for all of your helpful comments!

Oh, decisions, decisions!

I like the chevron skirt, and it's nice and soft and comfy, but I have a much more visceral attraction to the Rachel Roy skirt. Angie, I'm surprised that you think it's too short.
Also, I'm going to have to try it on again to see about the shifting issue. It wasn't terrible, but that sort of thing sometimes bothers me. I wonder if I should go up a size, to alleviate that issue and the length as well?

As much as I like the orange jacket, I think I am going to try this blue one. (Could I put an order in for the model's long legs as well?) I don't have an easy time with fit, so who knows whether it will work, but I think maybe I would feel more comfortable in that color . I'm trying to add some drama and boldness to my wardrobe, but I have a fear of being garish.

Thank you all for your input!

I prefer the chevron skirt on you! The RR is just a tad too short.

I definitely prefer the cobalt jacket with your complexion

The shifting of the RR would be a deal-breaker for me, just like Suz. I don't care for orange with black, so I can't comment objectively on that one :). I love the idea of a blue jacket for you, if you could find one.

I love both on you, Parsley, but, if I had to pick only one it would be the Rachel Roy for its fashion-forward edge. Does the moving and shifting of the design occur often, as in walking or just when sitting?

Either one is a keeper and I love it with your orange jacket and cobalt stand-in.

I agree with Suz that the RR skirt not staying in place properly would drive me crazy and ensure I never wore it. I vote return the leather jacket too. You do not seem like you love it, and it seems like a lot of effort to make it work.

Both skirts look good to me, but I am concerned that the RR doesn't stay "put." That would drive me crazy, personally, and make it a deal breaker, no matter how good it looked!

I think this works with the orange jacket as a fun going-out look, particularly with the RR, but do you have other ways to wear that jacket?

I adore that Rachel Roy skirt (I've ordered it as well) and love it with the contrasting orange jacket. I have to admit though that the cobalt jacket would be my preferred colour for you.

I have to say that you look stunning in both outfits. I thought I'd pick the chevron skirt, but I agree that the first one looks edgier and I actually love it with the orange jacket and the boots! I think that's a pretty fun "going out" outfit! Do you love the orange? If so, maybe you should keep it. I'm guessing the blue will look stunning as well.

IDK, something about the chevron skirt with this combo is more appealing to me. It seems more cohesive or something.
LOVE the orange jacket... I like it better than the blue, so please keep with my blessing

I think I like #1 the best. I got the chevron skirt, too, and I think I am going to return it because it is "not quite perfect". It looks great on you but if I had to pick only one of the two skirts, I would go for the Rachel Roy skirt.

On the other hand, after reading QueenMum's comment I went back to look at pictures, and I think she is right, the chevron skirt looks better in that particular combination (with the orange jacket). I guess I just really like the jacket on you and am no help with the skirts....
