My sister and I played with Barbies. Didn't hurt us any. My 3 daughters played with Barbies. Didn't hurt them any.

This reminds me of a story, though. When my eldest daughter was in 4th grade, her teacher took me aside and said she was worried because DD was drawing princesses in the margins of her math notebook. I remembered doing the same, and I think I turned out alright.

I'm a physician. DD is now a marine biologist (and was still drawing the princesses in university. Good practice, I guess, for drawing nudibranchs--she discovered 2 new species.)

I heard about that study. I rather suspect the doll chosen is not the cause but the result. I'd also be interested to know if Mrs. Potato Head comes anywhere near the popularity of Barbie. Anybody know anybody who's begged for a Mr. or Mrs. Potato Head?

My poor mother, you know, tried to get me to play with matchbox cars and wear pants. Sadly for her, a frilly girl is a frilly girl. She still complains, 30 years on.

I'm also wondering what variety of occupations were presented. Was it that they felt less capable, or that the position was deemed less desirable? There are a lot of small issues that can skew a study like this.

IK, the article says it was out of 10 occupations.

Not sure what to think. All I can say is that Mrs. Potato Head does not seem nearly as exciting as Barbie to me. And it seems that Mrs. Potato Head would be of more interest to the younger kids in the study. I think by the time I was 7, I was disenchanted with Mr. Potato Head (there was no Mrs. back then) and was enamored with Barbie. But at ages 4 and 5, I would probably have enjoyed Mr. Potato Head more.

Not really related to fashion or even dressing up Barbie, so putting in off topic.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....girls-care

"The authors of the study report that whether girls played with “Doctor
Barbie” — decked out in a white coat and jeans with a sparkly applique —
or “Fashion Barbie” — dressed in a form-fitting minidress and high
heels — they were likely to judge themselves capable of plying, on
average, 1.5 fewer occupations than a boy could. Those who played with
Mrs. Potato Head foresaw basically the same range of career
opportunities as boys did."

Small sample size, but very interesting results.
