Thanks Lynn I'll check out the samsonite and pacsafe. They are all very similar to the sporty items I already have but still worth a look.

SarahD8 I'll take a look at Tumi also, thanks!

Great set of thoughtful goals, Chris.

Re: purses, i have a Tumi Capri cross body that I am carrying most of the time these days. It's nylon, sturdy, surprisingly roomy. It works as both a travel purse and an everyday around town bag. I consider it "JSE" (Just Stylish Enough).

Modernizing essentials is something I will need to remember once I define my essentials :)).

But travel stuff I may be able to help with. I have major wanderlust and travel frequently.

I have a Samonite travel backpack that I love. It has gone on many trips with me. Holds my laptop + couple of changes of
clothing and all my plane stuff. And it fits over the handle of my suitcase. It is fairly lightweight but Ebags website might have some lighter alternatives.

https://www.amazon.com/Samsoni.....e+backpack

Regarding travel purses- check out PacSafe. I have a crossbody purse that is actually fairly polished that I use for city travel. For places like SE Asia, Turkey etc I carry a more casual sling pack as a day pack. I feel like I have more control over my stuff than I would with a backpack. The one I linked is actually quite spacious.

https://www.amazon.com/Pacsafe.....afe+purses

https://www.amazon.com/Pacsafe.....e+backpack

I hope this is helpful.

thanks for the encouragement Angie! I have learned so much since joining YLF and am looking forward to these upgrades. I do like a bit of "REI travelling clothing", but I also want to have other options.

*happy dance*

I love it when we pay attention to our wardrobe essentials and wardrobe basics. They often don't get the love they deserve.

Chris, FWIW, I am a very experienced traveller: lots of long flights and short flights across the globe, using all modes of transport both private and public, across a variety of weather conditions and dress codes (from very casual and biz attire, to wedding formal). None of my stuff is gear, athleisure, or sporty looking - (apart from my Converse and Frye sneakers, and even those don't look athletic) - yet it's all very practical, does the job, and makes me feet fab. I don't have "REI travelling clothes", which people think you need when you travel to Europe. You don't. You DO have to be very discerning about the pieces you travel with, which I am. It has taken practice though, and I've learned from my mistakes.

All that to say, that if you want to create a non-sporty travelling look - you can!

Thanks La P. Now I just have to put this into action. . Not necessarily going to do it all right away. Yeah, I do see a lot of fashion backpacks so I'll have plenty to choose from. I know what you mean about trying to prioritize bags. I feel the same way about shoes too. I agree that western inspired boots seem a bit "tired looking". Lucky brand still has a lot of them and the two pairs I have are super comfortable and not all that pricy as leather boots go so I'm not unhappy with them. For me the western look goes along with boho - I like a little but not much more than that.

Interesting that you used to rep for Baggallini, lisa p. They are really well made, lots of colors, and as you say fit a well-defined target market. I like some of the shapes but not the really thin ones with lots of zippers. I see them a lot in my area. Stores here still have a lot of puffer coats too, just nothing that is inspiring me. I will definitely check out Baggallini's new offerings, thanks for the suggestion. I just bought a small orange one to use for airline travel where I can put a few essentials in it and stuff it into the backpack I've been using lately as a carry-on, but easily pull out the essentials bag when in airports.

Style fan, you are right about how old well-loved boots can be really hard to replace. Styles change and of course overall quality goes downward as prices go upward. You crack me up...stand out vs. blend into the trees :-). I haven't seen too many puffers in those colors and I bet they look fab on you.

Christina F I do look at sportsac occasionally but I don't really like the prints that much and the webbing/edging that is part of most of the designs is more casual than I like. They do seem to be well made.

torontogirl, thanks! So far I'm loving the blondo boots and could easily see buying other ones.

These are very nicely focused goals.

I like Le Sport Sac bags for travel, as they have a lot of the upside of the Baggalinis but come in fun patterns too.

This is a very useful post for me, Chris. I am also looking to upgrade some of my winter essentials. My boots seem very tired but I just can't find anything that works nearly as well.
There are still lots of parkas around here, as Lisa has pointed out, and many are on sale. I find having two parkas, one Olive Green and one Burnt Orange, works really well for me. I can ask myself "Do I want to be seen today or do I want to blend into the pine trees?"

I found this interesting - in part because I used to be the rep for Baggallini (they have a definite target market and are quite successful here) - but also because I'm always looking to change up the pieces I use every day like backpacks and totes and plain boots. I like your substitutes for the cognac loafers, and I'm sure it will be easy to find a new puffer next fall. Stores here are still full of them, (I've had my eye on a particular olive green one) but I can't conjure up the enthusiasm for buying one right now either. Back to the Baggallini - they have some new styles that are a bit less utilitarian (polished gold hardware that is more fashion-y and softer, rounder designs) and also some interesting new colours. Check them out on-line.

These look like really smart, targeted upgrades. I agree that it might make sense to wait 'til next season for a down coat, although you might luck out and find something perfect on a clearance rack.

Fashion backpacks seem to be all over the place right now -- lots of great options out there, so it is a good time to be on the lookout for one that appeals.

Outerwear, footwear, bags are all categories where I struggle with whether to choose a versatile neutral or a bold statement -- especially bags, since they're not near my face and that gives some freedom to choose colours that aren't one's "best." I really want a small bright-coloured bag (maybe turquoise or sky blue) but I'd also love to find a white or off-white bag with silver hardware (very elusive), so the question becomes, which one is my priority?

I know what you mean about western inspired booties feeling a little tired all of a sudden. When did that happen?! A few years ago they seemed to be everywhere.

I set myself one more goal - to upgrade/modernize some of my wardrobe essentials, mostly shoes/bags/outerwear. I have quite a few that are old, too classic for what I want now, too sporty, or otherwise don's spark joy any longer. I still might keep some of the oldies because they could still serve a purpose. Here are some of my ideas

1. I DID just upgrade my waterproof, supportive, warm winter boots. Oldies - Ugg; New - Blondo

2. I've started using a backpack as an air travel carryon, whether I do or don't check a bag. It needs to be able to hold my laptop, and be fairly lightweight. Today I use an Eddie Bauer classic hiking backpack. Would like something like the kipling

3 These cognac woven toe loafers are fine but I want something more modern this spring.

4. My trusty baggallini black nylon hobo/cross body that I use as a default when travelling. Lightweight, zips shut, waterproof, hands-free, practical size, covers all bases. But quite sporty. At a minimum I might get one in another color but a less utilitarian style would be even better.

5. My black winter puffer that is my warmest coat is, again, "fine", but there are so many more stylish options out there. I may wait until next fall when the supply builds up again.

6. Cognac booties. super comfy, but a bit worn and tired of the western vibe.

...and overall the color palette of these basics could use some lightening, brightening, shine, sparkle, or.......
