How are you guys measuring---stand against a wall like a kid and mark and measure or by free standing?
Good question about the hip part--where is that??? Sounds dumb to ask but I have had friendly arguments about this over the years.

Does arm length play in this??

Very interesting Heleen. That is analysis!

And ditto, Claire. It makes me want to break out the tape measure and get particular. In my case, I'm pretty sure that I am just slightly short legged and long torsoed (but only slightly); with a normal waist, but a long rise. I'll check it out!

A while ago I did a digital version of an excersize out of one of Imogens books. In her book your legs start in the crotch, but in my case that is about the same place as the widest part of my body so the outcome is the same: short legged, long waisted.
I have read some of the advice and just as ButterflyLady notices, some of the suggestions don't work. I guess you have to take the different pages (vertical bodytype, horizontal body type and short or long waistedness) and distill what is best and worst for you. It also takes some experimenting as we all know on YLF

That's interesting - I have a long torso and shorter legs (only about an inch or two in it though) but I have a high bust and a long rise. So the suggestions for how to dress on that site don't work at all - I cannot tuck tops into trousers/pants, as I look so weird.

Balanced for me 34" for both. I guess all my problems are over. Thank you, this was interesting. I always thought I was long legged.

Hmmm - I just did this (roughly) and I am long legged with short torso - but I do almost all the don'ts.
In fact a work outfit this summer was a little reminiscent of a circus acrobat on stilts (high-waisted wide legged trousers, tucked in stripy top, platform sandals) and I loved it

Hah! Had to log back in and comment because I love this stuff.

I have a long torso (like in one-piece bathing suits) BUT I am not long waisted. After much scrutinizing, I discovered where the extra inches are....between my chin and my chest! Or on this chart, the uppermost proportion, giving me not only a long neck but a large expanse of real estate at the upper chest. Even with a really good bra hiking the girls up as far as possible, I have a "low bossom" (and always did, even before I nursed two babies).

My sisters are built the same way, as we found out at our family reunion last weekend. I have never seen this issue addressed in any chart, but I have found bulky scarves work really well for me!

I don't even have to remeasure. I am so obviously long torsoed! I did wonder what she meant my "hip line".

See this one is easy for me--- tried it again and I am long-legged with a short torso and short waist. However, I don't follow the rules when it comes to these things. I do wear longer jackets and an occasional pair of cuffed pants but I prefer to emphasize my small waist and long legs, which I think are balanced out by the fact that I am actually not as tall as my leg length would suggest and am curvy and an average to larger person through the hips, bust and shoulders.

I measure hip to floor and it was about 34". I am just under 65" (5'5") so that means my hip to head is 31". If I allow an inch for error since I wasn't that careful and was using a measuring tape I am almost even at 33" and 32".

Again, illuminating visuals on body ratios - these make me think I have normal, albeit petite proportions, not a short-waisted and short legged (or "Hobbit") body, as I thought.
