Thanks again Jazzy dance,
The Title Nine catalog arrives unsolicited a few times a year for the last few years and I don't think I ever noticed that they had dresses.... Likewise I have had a few knit woolen hand-me-down dresses which were a stretchy clingy mess. So this is a genre of garments that I didn't even know existed. My local REI has sporty summer dresses but not winter ones. I think that they mostly sell coats during the colder months. I will put them on my list for 2019! I'm going to buy a coat this November and limit myself to undergarments and shoes for 2018.

All of my dresses are some sort of cotton spandex or cotton wool blend... I buy most of my dresses from Title Nine, which markets to sporty type ladies who they presume can’t be bothered to hand wash or dry clean. I don’t think they sell anything that can’t be washed.

I also took a cue from Angie years ago and wash everything on the ‘hand wash’ setting in my washer too.

Jazzy dance, I'm curious about what is the fabric from which your winter dresses are made. My two warmer dresses are 100% rayon and I have been too afraid of messing them up to dare to put them in the washer. I only have dry cleaned them. I do regularly wash fabric blended items which are rayon with spandex, but pure rayon is often more touchy.

3Style,

I have a uniform for work that consists of workout pants and a t-shirt, and as I was given only 2 of each, I do laundry every other day. (I’m too cheap to spend my own money on a work uniform!) When I’m at home I wear comfy loungies, and I’m a real homebody who prefers to stay in most of the time. So my needs for ‘real’ clothing are very little!

I am also uncomfortable in layers so when I do go out I just wear a dress of varying weights depending on the season. I have 4 for winter and 5 for summer, some leggings and a denim jacket... that’s all I’ve got. I don’t wear jeans or trousers, my squishy bits are super uncomfortable in pants.

I actually do wash everything all together, but I wash on cold, so maybe that’s why I haven’t had any discoloration? Or maybe i just haven’t noticed. ;)

I have 4 coats/jackets I keep in my hall closet that I don’t count...

I’m sure if I worked a regular job or was less hermity I’d have a need for more clothing! I used to buy tons of stuff for some aspirational lifestyle I thought I would someday have, but that got expensive and overwhelming, and I found minimizing my choices therapeutic.

Jazzy dance, I am always so amazed by this concept. I often wear five layers on top in the winter before counting a coat!

And, between my laundry and my husband's, I like to have a critical mass of red-orange, blackish, whitish, gray/beige and blue to wash together for efficient laundry purposes. I get terrible results from mixing colors in the washer. Do you dry clean or hand wash everything? Or only wear one color?

Gigi and The Cat, Thanks for the encouragement on H&M. I can always use socks, accessories, etc. So, I am determined to follow thru with these 2 bags of clothes. I have been so faithful trying to get them together, I must give them one last shot and take them in.

Gigi and unfrumped, I am going to put more effort into shopping for HEWI's and lists, rather than random shopping as I am so inclined to do.

Lisa, it sounds like you have your wardrobe in order and shopping organized where you truly enjoy it. I so envy you. :)

Jazzy Dance, You work magic. It is difficult for me to picture having only 10 hangers (because you choose that number) and buy new things whenever you fancy. I do one-half of that myself--I buy new things when I want too, but sure don't get by with 10 hangers. I am trying to get better about impulse shopping and by being a member of YLF has helped a lot.

I follow this strictly. I have a very small wardrobe although my natural inclination is to purchase new things whenever I fancy, which is clearly not a good plan. Like others have suggested, I have a set number of hangers in my closet. ( I have 10.) I also have one small dresser drawer for workout clothes and 1 drawer for loungewear. If anything new is going to fit, something old has to go out to make way. This works well for me.

Yes. If I don't I quickly become overwhelmed by the size of my wardrobe. I do take longer for shoes than clothes, mostly because shoes cost me more and are hardest for me to fit and find comfortable. So getting rid of shoes is not easy to do. And I do let items sit for a season unworn. I don't expect my entire wardrobe to be in high use all of the time, but I do plan for 80% of it to be used, so I can't let too many things sit unworn. Because I keep my wardrobe smaller in number, and I like change, I end up refreshing and updating fairly often.

Gigi’s comment about HEWI’s or even just specific items is on point. Same as having a list. Sometimes I might’ve shopping for sweaters when my “ list” tells me I need to replace some tights or get a dress for a wedding. I tend to do what’s easy, not always what’s necessary.

Just adding to Gigi's comment about H&M:
They have lots of hosiery, scarves, jewellery and other accessories, in addition to cosmetics etc. Usually, they also have a small "department" (at least a corner) with more "adult" clothes. And they often have nice blouses (with long, 3/4 or short sleeves) that can be worn by any age group. I have also found many other items at H&M (i e. blazers and knitwear) which look rather timeless.

Bridgie, H&M has a lot of no-frills socks and probably underwear too. You might find something there that you could use from a practical standpoint.

I'm not super careful about one in, one out, but I do have limited space for clothing, so when things start getting tight, I just do a closet cull. Like unfrumped, I try to ask myself whether something already in my closet will languish if I buy a particular item.

I recently bought a pair of leopard-print open-toe booties on sale at Anthro for a really good price, and I know that a not-too-often-worn-but-still-loved pair of sandals is going to sometimes not get worn because I'm wearing the leopard booties. But the color and price of the booties was right, and I love leopard, so I decided to go for it. I already have a few pairs of shoes that I am planning to donate to make space.

If closet space is at a premium, sometimes I make it a point just to shop for HEWIs or extremely particular pieces, which translates into lots of shopping but not much buying (because the items are elusive). That helps me keep my closet in check.

Oh, Jenni, just finished replying to your post on the extra long sleeved top. And yes, you might call me an enabler. In that post I put in a plug for the extended sleeves (in a kidding way).

I like your idea of dropping off my stuff somewhere. I cannot stand the thoughts of going in somewhere and waiting for mostly rejections. I don't donate worn out, torn, or stained clothes. I trash them. I know H&M used to give a coupon if you brought in clothes in any condition, only requirement, it has to be clean. So I now have a bag full of stuff to trash or take to them. Now, get this, I have never bought anything at H&M, too trendy and youthful for me. So, if I got a coupon from them, I would have to shop and stress trying to find something to buy in order to use the coupon. Yea, really. Like you, next?

Hi Bridgie I love your posts. You can be quite an enabler! I think your closet must be even larger than mine! I have made a list of items I am thinking of ditching. I need to do more of a seasonal swap again and see if more can go. My charity shop can't decline my items because I drop them to the distribution centre. I only give them quality stuff though but don't care how old it is. The 2008 square toed black shoes went there. Ripped or too-worn stuff goes to the "clothing bin" where some is sold for rags.

Well- I don’t ACT too rigidly about the 1-in/ 1- out , that’s why I get into trouble! I just know that i have a tendency to add random things that overlap or are similar to something I’ve got and then may have trouble finding something wrong- enough with the existing items to break loose from them, but there’s more than I can wear frequently enough. Too much not- very- worn stuff doesn’t make me happy.

So I’m trying to keep focused on more strategic wardrobe upgrades or updates based on actually replacing items, due to fit or style shifts or whatever. So fat that seems best played out by asking, what existing item becomes irrelevant, or will languish, if I get this new one ?

I agree with the Cat that an organized closet, grouped by item type, really helps for this. I even have different color hangers for tops -- one for wovens, one for knits/tees. And I separate each by sleeve length. Plus, I hang things in order of color -- black/grey/white/neutral then ROYGBIV. But I have a large wardrobe, so any way that I can organize it helps.

The Cat, Thank you! This morning I had pulled the houndstooth sweater coat I mentioned earlier and was thinking of replacing it with a new black and white one that had caught my eye. Well, I tried it on, it fits great. I looked at it with a very critical eye and see nothing wrong with it. It is so simply detailed, I think it is a classic. 70%silk, 30% cotton. No way, that coat is leaving my closet for some untried item that is probably more poly than anything. Then when I read your post favoring it, that confirmed my decision to keep! Thank you, that is a few bucks saved, I can put to something else . No, my closet is not organized very well at all. :)

To everybody who posted: your hints on hangers and organization have given me a whole new outlook on my closet. I have been working on it daily since the day I wrote the first post and I believe I see progress. LOL

Thank you, Bridgie. You are so kind. And I will congratulate you for discarding 13 items. By the way, I bet your black & white hundstooth sweater coat looks great! (I love all those elements--b&w, hundstooth, and sweater coats.)

I would like to add that in my closet I find it useful to hang i.e. all pants together, all blouses together and all jackets together. And in my drawers, I have separate places for i.e. turtlenecks, long-sleeved crew neck pullovers, short-sleeved tees, and tank tops. (Of course, this may be quite natural to you and many others, but I have noticed that often, people who find their closet overwhelming and kind of chaotic don't have a similar system.) Having sorted all items by category makes it easy to get an overview of what's in a closet (and, maybe, what's missing) and saves time when planning outfits. Besides, it is pleasant to the eye. Within each category, you can even sort the items by colour if you like--I sometimes do.

The Cat, I think you have the right attitude. Sounds like you have a more relaxed feeling about your closet. And, why not? Our closets should be fun rather than something to stress about. That is where I want to be. :)

I don't follow that rule, as it seems rigid to me, and I would feel too restricted by it.

I do have limited space in my closet and my attic, but I "inspect" my wardrobe at least four times a year (when the seasons change). And then, or at any other time during the year: If something is worn out or for any other reason no longer deserves a place in my closet, it will have to go. I may not feel that I need to keep it until I have bought something new. Contrary, if I choose to buy some new items, I don't feel that I immediately have to get rid of just as many "old" items.

citygirldc, thanks for posting. Now isn't that sweet that your husband takes that much interest. He is a good coach. :)

unfrumped, thanks. I agree with you. I hope that by even thinking about it and whatever small step I take will help reduce the size of my wardrobe. YLF has been a wonderful find for me!

I am trying to do this. Not NAS- related per se. I have not been perfect but sometimes do more than one.
I do believe it’s one of the best ways for me to shrink wardrobe overall and have more multi- season items. I can see it working when I am consistent. So it remains in my plan.

My husband would say 1 in 2 out. LOL! I agree about wood hangers forcing you to buy less although those darned wire hangers seem to show up quick.

Thanks to all for sharing all this good info. Janet and Greyscale, I am going to make it a point to invest in some good wooden hangers, as soon as possible. They are indeed better to hang coats, blazers and jackets.

Joy, You will make your goal, too. You are right on that sometimes one new item can replace several. As a matter of fact I am having a little struggle with something now. I have mentioned before that I am eliminating black and bringing in navy/ink. I am doing fine bringing in the navy, also olive. My great capsule of black is safely hanging in front of my closet. Just this past Sunday, I saw a black thigh length, maybe a little longer, a very good length on me, I think, black cardi, trimmed in white. I walked away from it, didn't check it out, didn't touch it, nor check the price. Now two days later and your comment brings it back in focus.:) It was at Steinmart, and I do go in the store about once a month and occasionally find something there I love. Anyway, I am thinking if it works for me, that after a couple or no more than three glasses of wine, I have a nice black and white houndstooth sweater coat, about 15 years, a newer black and white abstract print waist length cardi, several or many (not going to count) other black items I might let go. In shorter dialogue, I would keep last years black ponte pants (1 pair), a black skirt, a black leather vest and a solid black blouse, and maybe one black shell. I am guessing I could let go of 7 to 10 pieces. I haven't had any wine yet, just got a call for some volunteer work!

Sterling, don't give up. Read what Brooklyn said. She doesn't keep one-in 0ne-out in the same category. I have always tried to keep in same category, but have decided to cross over in categories. Read on. At the end of this post I have a confession to make. And I may be voted off this forum after I post it.:)

Greyscale, thanks for posting. You know, if I could get a few dimes on my stuff, I wouldn't mind so much letting it go, but I never do well with it. And I don't want to get into mailing it anywhere. So I will just continue donating it locally. I can understand why they won't accept my things sometimes, like I mentioned above I might donate a 15 year old item. However, I quickly add that not everything is that old or anywhere near it. I understand how you feel about your shirts. I would feel the same way. I sure can't make a suggestion because as you know I have a hard time letting go of anything. But hope it works out well for you. :)

Last evening I said that I had bought two new tops on Sunday and that by today I would post what two items would be out.

So, either you can congratulate me or vote me off for discarding 13 (no less) items: 1 cream colored camp shirt, well worn and threadbare. Twelve pairs of novelty earrings, pink flamingos, red and white dangles. Don't think they get any worse but no better either. Angies's post yesterday on rose gold had an influence on that decision. I have a couple rose gold items I love.

I have Ikea wood hangers, and their width helps keep me from buying too much clothing - I can't fit more onto my racks. Also, Ikea changed the style of their wood hangers, so my particular ones are discontinued. This is a blessing in disguise! I can't cheat by buying more hangers.

But, just this week I hit the point where I had more things than hangers. So I did a cull of my closet and moved aside a handful of shirts I haven't worn in a few years. Thing is, they're perfectly serviceable shirts and I still like them. I'm pondering whether the right thing is to sell them or not. It might be better to remind myself to work them into my daily wardrobe. (I'm good about getting rid of things I don't like, things that don't work for some reason. These are a different category somehow.)
