One in - one out is also helpful for me to put things in perspective - if something is better in every way then the old favorite, then it is a worthwhile purchase and I am more willing to let the old thing go.

That is an awesome puffer which looks amazing on you! Figures that it's Mackage.
I do not practice one in one out, preferring to do semi annual purges when I swap out my seasons. However since I have started accumulating more shoes than I have room for or can reasonably wear out, I can understand the value of assessing whether something new is truly good enough to replace something existing. That usually puts things in perspective. Despite rarely leaving the house these days and no need for office or evening clothes, I got a huge crush on some chunky menswear inspired Maguire loafers, and compared them mentally to a pair from 5+ years ago. Next time I looked at my shoe storage I realized I have another pair purchased 1 or 2 years ago that I totally forgot about! Two pair is already way beyond my current non existent needs. If I practiced one-in-one-out I would not be able to "forget" what I already have.

WOW - that coat looks amazing on you. Fits you to perfection! And the colour is stunning.

I probably do one in one out on balance, but I have a relatively small wardrobe, so I don't manage it too strictly. I am working on bringing even less in though!

The new coat is super flattering!

I have limited storage space, and so I kind of do 1 in 1 out- not always replacing like with like, but limiting myself to the right amounts of shoes, bags, coats etc, so that my wardrobe fits my space.

New coat looks great! I don't do one in one out, but do try to get rid of the lesser equivalent if there is one in my wardrobe. And then periodically edit if things get crowded.

Because I want to reduce the size of my wardrobe somewhat I am not doing one-in one-out, more like none-in some-out or if one-in then more out. But getting rid of things also depends on the season as I tend to be clearing at the end of the season when I see if something got worn or not. I don’t want to be mean to the nicest charity shops by donating good stuff in the wrong season. Hence I need to hold it until the start of the next season. If it is for the “clothing bin” where they can decide if it is for selling in their stores or for rag recycling, I don’t mind if the season is off. They are a bigger chain with more storage space.
Like SarahD8, Liz and RobinF though, I sometimes have trouble letting go of the “old one” of whatever-it-is, and as I am trying to shop less, that frequently means I don’t need to buy the new one- which is why I haven’t bought silvery pants yet, because I have still been wearing the black-with-silver NYDJ. Those have now been worn 30 times though so I feel OK now to pass them on if I do find better. I don’t think I love them, I wore them because they were there and wearing what you already own is the most sustainable!

I have slipped a bit this year and my wardrobe has grown. Part of this was deliberate as my needs changed with work. Part has been wanting new things!! I also have kept a couple of things despite a replacement (coat and black work pants).....It is a good discipline to stop too many new additions because you have to be strong with letting pieces go.

I need to work on the “out” half. I like to keep things for a long time and pull them back out again when the time is right—like my jeans and paisley shirt with mismatched trim. But eventually things may need to move on, like the jersey-lined jeans (unless I find the right boots). I don’t often find that point very well.

I like the idea on one-in-one-out but don't actually follow it. I am not good about purging - always afraid I will miss it. It usually takes a few seasons of not being worn before I am comfortable giving it up.

Love the navy coat, looks really nice on you. The fit looks perfect if it is big enough for sweaters underneath.

Two of my heavier puffers always go packing into the suitcase and under the hanging things in my shared closet during warm months.
Limited space for the hanging coats/puffers. I wear more puffers than coats so it's easier to deal with.
One-in and one-out works well for my tee-shirts and some shoes
( sandals especially - I'm hard on them in long CA summer ).

It's funny you mention counting hangers... I AM strict about limiting space for items (once my shoes fill up my shoe rack, I am not allowed any more shoes); same for hangers - I do not buy hangers; once they are full, no more hangers. I am more lenient with folded things, which oddly is most of my essentials (jeans, casual pants, tees, knits)

Interesting...

Interesting approaches to one-in one-out. I am trying to be strict regarding broad category, because I know how much space I have and hom many items in a category work for my life. For example I have 12 hangers in my coat closet. If I want to add new one, something must go. It is not strict as exact replacement because I may replace wool coat for a puffer, but it is within category. It was relatively easy to always find something for one-out, because of my weight fluctuations there is always something that doesn’t fit. But I wonder how that will work if everything fit and I love all. No more shopping?

Nice new coat - good fit and color ( I prefer navy to black ).
I try to do one-in and one-out but loosely. I added one light blue puffer during lockdown for the option of wearing it over jackets/blazers - it might feel too big now with my weight hitting a low point ( not planing on giving up any old ones yet ).

Beautiful coat - Mackage is the best . Navy really is a great colour for you.

I don't practice one-in and one-out because I'm never replacing truly worn out or damaged pieces. Coats and jackets are actually the category I'm least likely to purge from : in my climate variety is everything and sometimes an older version of say a puffer can be useful for outdoor activities where a fancier new one would be too precious.

All this said, I know that being strict with a one-in one-out policy would be a good thing, and that moving forward in life is something I'd like to adhere to.

I do a loose one-in-one out. I am definitely more strict with it on statement and completer pieces than I am with essentials.

If it is an item I know I will wear a LOT, and is an essential, I will allow myself to acquire multiples (within a certain limit). Sometimes, there is a shift in lifestyle or whatever that means a tee will get replaced with a sweater, or a jean will get replaced with a jogger...

For things like jackets, I really focus on what makes a particular jacket fall out of favor, then shop for an upgrade, and pass on the out-of-favor one. If I did not, I would probably end up with a hundred jackets...
I just did this last month and edited out a super-tailored trench for a longer lightweight wrap jacket and replaced a velvet blazer with a corduroy jacket. Both jackets, but the new ones are more practical and wearable.

I did exactly the same thing with puffer coats. Old black one out, new navy one in. Be sure your new puffer is big enough to layer under. I hung onto the old black coat for a year to see if it was needed for activities like sledding with grandkids, sleigh rides, and scooping snow. It was not so got passed on during a city coat drive last year.
I will not replace summer tops with summer tops because I have too many, unless I have a very good reason For doing so. At this point I would replace underwear in the same colors. New tops need to be long and swingy enough to hide my glucose meter. Anything short or tight is gone.

I've become a real fan of one-in, one-out. Mostly because i'm determined not to let my wardrobe size expand and expand and expand. Like SarahD8, it prompts me to get rid of placeholders and items that don't really work, and sometimes I really need that prompt to "force" me to make a decision about something. It's been a huge benefit. I'm gradually clearing away the "ho hum" items that are 6's or 7's as newer 8's or 9's come in. I don't know what will happen, though, when the closet is mostly 8's - 10's!

Sarah, I, too, sometimes don't want to actually remove the previous iteration. I've started using that as a buying question: If I buy this "replacement" will I actually give up the old thing? If the answer is no, I realize that I'm really done with the old thing yet -- for whatever reason -- and i should hold off buying the new thing. I'm at that point right now with my daily tote bag, that I keep thinking I want to replace. Not actually ready to give it up. Usually when I'm really, actually, done with the old thing, I'm willing to give it up. (I rarely keep things in my closet out of sentiment ---I might pack them away in a sentimental box, if they carry a lot of memories. But I try not to need the "thing" in order to keep the memory, because I just don't have that much storage space.)

This is a beautiful jacket/coat! I do not practice this rule. I tried for some time but it was too stressful to think what to get rid of every time. But I do edit my closet often, at least twice a year I make a big purging but I also make quite many small ones. When I see that something no longer deserves a place in my closet, off it goes.

The new coat fits you beautifully through the torso — wow! How does it feel around the neck? It seems like there’s a lot going on in that area, and it could be dramatically elegant or it could be fussy and bulky, depending on how it feels when worn.

I am not strict about one in-one out. However, recently I’ve been noticing that when I add a new item I often use the opportunity to pass on a similar item that I had realized I didn’t love but that I’d been hanging on to as a kind of placeholder. (But on the flip side, sometimes when I buy something as a deliberate replacement for a specific item, I have trouble actually removing the previous iteration from my wardrobe. What’s up with that??)

Like nuancedream, I do tend to practice it, but not strict about it. It depends on the item and how much of a direct replacement it is.

The jacket looks great!

I do practice one in-one-out but I am not obsessive about it. Unfortunately, over the years, I jettisoned some lovely belts because I wasn't wearing them. Of course, now I wish I had them. Before I get rid of anything, I carefully consider if the item fits my current lifestyle and style goals. Also, I enlist the help of a trusted fashionable friend for ideas on other ways to wear an item.

I have been practicing one-in one-out rule for years. I am currently in process of replacing my old black puffer with navy one in smaller size. I hope I have found worthy replacement. What do you think? Do you also practice one-in one-out? If you do, are you strict with it, replacing category with the same category or more loose?
