Some of the items mentioned never really went away, they just are no longer considered fashionable among the trendy set. Chamois shirts are a staple in the LL bean catalog and my husband is a huge fan (when he finds something he likes he sticks with it). Fabric Mary Janes are ubiquitous in the Asian markets in my city. White bucks are a must have in a Southern Gentleman's closet. They are the only shoe that looks good with a Seersucker suit. Other trends creep back in, but never quite catch on the way they did the first time; stirrup pants, acid wash, and yes I even saw a pair of fold over waist jeans recently that retailed for over $200.00.

This is a great thread ... I think overalls with one strap undone were likely a one-hit wonder from the 90s??

I saw a young trendista in stirrup pants the other day!!

Oh there are some great fashions here aren't there...

I wanted some of the fabric Mary Janes so badly in 1981 - I also wanted a quilted jacket - both to wear with velvet knickerbockers.

Stirrup pants are more than a one hit wonder then - they have had a few times of trending.

I am not sure if I would wear a bullet bra or a macrame necklace but I would love to wear a net petticoat!! And I would wear the matching leotard and skirt too.

Fold over jeans - mmmmm - and early polyester was pretty gnarly wasn't it.....

MsMaven you look too good to be a fashion victim in your pics.

Those wavy sole shoes were called Famolares and were supposed to be very healthy for your feet. But they kind of pitched you forward when you walked in them so you ended up being very unsteady on your feet. I tried on a pair but only saw disaster ahead if I tried to walk for any distance at all. But they were billed as a health shoe of the first order.

I have not read all these responses so please forgive duplicate.
* full gathered skirts worn with multiple neon colored stiff net petticoats (1950's)
*. Bobby socks with two tone oxfords (late 50s-eRly 60's)
* paper shift dresses ( 60s)
* machrame choker necklaces (60's-70's)
* crochet granny square bikinis and vests (60's-70's)
*polyester suits
* those very pointy bras (bullet bras?)
* hot pants suits (70's)
I hope none of these come back but might try the paper dresses again.

OMG! Like, so Retro!

@SarahD8 Thank you for remembering the black cotton mary janes (or China flats as we called them). These were such an 80's staple along with, or maybe more so, than the crochet shoes. I do not remember bubble gum jeans though. Stirrup pants: I just saw stirrup leggings at a JCP last week, not sure what the thought was... although they are really nice for tall boots. HaHaHa. I sort of remember moleskin clothing being a thing, I think I had a shirt that was like that (sort of flannel type, maybe it's the same as the chamois shirts below?).

Some things I remember as being one hit wonders or short-lived trends.
1. Chamois cloth shirts (80's) - I think they still make these.
2. Donut hole shoes and clogs (70's) - Why?
3. Wavy soled shoes (70's) - Why?
4. The Disco matching leotard and skirt (70's) - Actually this wasn't that awful, but it lasted as long as disco.
5. Plaid polyester Sansabelt pants (70's) - Not a good look on anyone. Wild-N-Crazy Guys or not.
6. Jeans tucked into socks w/ LA Gear sneakers (80's) - Sorry Paula, but why did we do this?

So silly, but at the time you just HAD to HAVE them!

What about Jams shorts? Very tropical prints, worn long...

I also remember severely ripped jeans with black spandex pants under them, worn with knee high moccasin boots, or knee high black boots that folded at the top, like robin hood.

Stirrup pants were popular in the early 60s, but I couldn't afford them and they didn't come long enough for my legs. I envied the girls that looked so neat in them. When they came back in the 80s I still couldn't find a pair that fit right.

Okay, from my youth, 8-12 grades:

felt circle skirts, with or without poodles
lots of crinolines under full skirts
white buck shoes (as I recall in 8th grade you were supposed to let them get dirty.)
cummerbunds on dresses

Later 70s:
peasant dresses. I've got more photos of these somewhere.

#1 Jr high graduation dress, sister in grade school grad dress
#2 high school graduation dance dress
# 3 white buck shoes
#4 peasant dress--I've got a full length of this somewhere.

CROCHETED BIKINIS!!! YES, the '70s. Good grief.

Those extremely high cut bathing costumes with the low armholes from 1985. Remember, Paulina?

I think china flats are still around. Like Jenn says, they always have them at Urban Outfitters. And the theatre I work with has about a million pairs in the costume dept. :)

I remember jellies in the 90s and I had a *strong* dislike for them as a kid -- too girly.

The first thing that came to mind for me were the ridiculous jeans from the 90s.

I remember those china mary janes as well. The ones I knew were velvet, in black, burgundy, forest green or navy. They had a plastic sole that was inflexible and would make a lot of noise. I liked them at the time but would not wear them again.
Then there were Buffalo shoes in the 90ies (see pic), and I really hope they are not coming back. Were they just a European teenager thing, or more wide-spread?

Awfully pretty and clever, but oh my gosh, once they got wet, they would get heavy and slide on off!!! I saw some last summer.

Sarahd8, urban outfitters has been carrying those China flats, so they’re at least back as a fringe trend. I wear them as slippers!

I’m seconding JP on the bubble skirts. We used to tuck our midi skirts into the waistband from underneath to get the look.

Oh yes jellies - I never had a pair but they were popular.

Brooklyn - I am okay with those headbands staying away!! And maybe moleskins are a rural classic, I wonder with 90s fashions reviving if these will again, or in a different version.

Jellies (plastic fisherman's sandals). I had a red pair in the late '70's (see below worn with high waisted 'painter' jeans) - but haven't seen them since.

I spend a lot of time visiting friends in the country and moleskins are still worn. I think of them as a classic rural Australian look. R M Williams and all that.

I think a lot of 80s looks haven’t come back - like pull on boots with scalloped edges, feathered headbands, blouses with bird images on one side.

Disposable dresses. They made an appearance in the late 60s (I think). They were in a can and made of J cloth material. I never had one but some of my friends did. Very simple style. I do not want to see them again.

Sal, they're cotton mary janes with a flat rubber sole -- usually black, sometimes with floral embroidery on the toe. idk, I don't really think they'd fit my current style but I have a real soft spot for them.
