Lise--I don't think I have seen much in the way of olive metallic. Sounds intriguing! I can see how that would work all year round.

An olive metallic leather bag of mine is almost all year round. Only a few outfits I don't like it paired with. Medium sized with multiple zip pockets in different sizes that are so handy. It has an adjustable strap so I can wear it cross body if I need to. When it needs replacing I hope to get the same in a copper colour then it really will be the one bag that rules all.

Ket--somehow I thought those were your bags. But if you found something so unusual at the thrift store, inexpensive, it wouldn't matter if it fell apart, as long as you had fun for a season.
Irina--I agree, straw in winter is a stretch, but in a permanent mild climate like Hawaii, it might work. That Bao Bao design does seem to work in a lot of places.
LJP--that Coach one sounds very pretty. You are the second to say these are very spring (Janet also said). I think the first one is very casual, and would work for most people all year round in the sunny southwest. I mean, those cost $15 or $30, and you replace them as needed.
The second--you may be right. Propriety is not my strength. But trying new things is! Something like that would work for at least most of the year here. It's Guess, and I did see they have about a million different patterns and bags in floral. Here are two I am considering.....

If I could only use one bag all year round, I guess my olive green pebbled leather Coach would be the one. I don't have it in finds, nor is it still available, so no photo. It's lightweight enough to not look seasonally out of sync, and I wear olive green 12 months a year, so .....

I am seasonally specific with my bags: even black ones get swapped out for a fabric suited to the season (leather for f/w and nylon for s/s etc). The ones you have shown , Carol, seem very spring like to my eye.

Roberta - now I want that bag. But could they please get rid of that logo/name?

I used to carry one black work bag a year around. those days are gone and I’m sensitive now to seasonal changes. I often use a straw or a fabric tote in the summer. I don’t think these would look good with a puffer in the winter. I also like top handle bags in the summer.
I have a similar Bao Bao backpack, too but I find it too hot to wear in the hot weather.
Winter bags are all crossbody as I need to hide my hands from cold. Some of my totes like Bao Bao or a black leather Tory Burch one, get more use because they are ok for summer, spring and fall.

So, not only our preferences but our climate and lifestyle need to be considered when deciding on a bag, imo.

Carol, I think the coin-tiled bag would really depend on construction. A little risky, and perhaps not hard wearing like unadorned leather. Yet, if the coins are really attached well and one isn't overly rough with the bag, I would think it would hold up well?? I would really like to make or thrift a bag similar to the ones in my photos. We'll see what happens this year! :D

Lisa--great pick--thanks for sharing. When I was poking around the internet for my potential "one bag," I did look at LV. I also find them timeless--not too glitzy, but such a great pattern.

Roberta--yes, I think having definite seasons will do that--change out your bags. Nice pick on the light blue--it is quite similar to the one in the video I showed.
Slim Cat--I do love a canvas tote, especially a small, decorative one. I guess they really are better in warmer weather, but I use mine into winter.
Sharan--nice bags, thanks for sharing. I really like the olive Madewell--so understated, and yet still has a lot of personality.
Echo--yes, that pink must surely be nice in the gray or snow of winter. I need to get more fun bags like that.
Ket--such a nice collection--thanks for sharing. Some of them look like they take big risks--like the coin-tiled one. But if you know your personality, you know what will work. It looks like you have a good sense for hardware, too, which I find challenging.

I'm benched for this one, because I like to switch my handbag with my outfits and with the seasons. But the most seasonless bag in my wardrobe is the LV. I consider the print classic and timeless and if I could only pick one bag, I think it can pair well across all seasons.

Cookie--thanks for sharing. such a pretty color purple, and the red goes well with you. I think your last comment, with the scarf, was red--seems like a good color on you.
Janet--thanks for sharing. I think I have seen you post the Miyake before, which is so distinctive, like the point of this post. Also love that electric blue. In terms of the floral bag I showed, I think it would work where I live in the southwest, because people wear their full range of clothes all year long, and there is a lot of sun!
Angie--no, never! BUT...if you could choose one desert island handbag, what would it be? Even if you were going to spend a year with a totally new bag.
Judy--that is a really lovely bag--thanks for sharing. A splurge for me, but maybe worth it. I love the pocket, and I can picture having something fun popping out--a few patterned pencils, or a bright pair of gloves.
Suz--that sounds like a nice assortment of bags. I would be really excited to see the fuschia one! It is an unusual color.

I do love to switch out handbags, as I have a decent vintage collection. That said, if I had to have one handbag to rule them all it would be a slouchy, supple hobo bag or fold-over envelope style. Color would strong, rich, lush, and in some kind of heavy leather or velvet.

Various photos just for reference.

However, I do have a hot pink bag that I find works with many outfits regardless of season. Indeed, I find it a nice pop of color when I'm wearing a darker winter coat.

It's a bag for my fantasy life, though.

I'm with Angie, and can't imagine one bag to rule them all. Like others here, though, I do find most of my bags are cross-seasonal. Perhaps the ones I get the most mileage out of are a simple black cross-body by Rebecca Minkoff and light olive or sage green cross-body by Madewell.

My bags are VERY seasonal: puffy silver, faux fur, dark leather are just for winter, and ivory canvas, nylon, lime green are for summer. Our Chicago seasons are very extreme of course, and maybe that is part of it. I don't want something heavy (material or visual) when I'm wearing the lightest possible outfit, and the reverse is also true.

HOWEVER: a pale blue, feminine, leather bag without a lot of hardware might be a reasonable compromise. If I was forced to choose.

Most of my bags are year-round. The Bao Bao backpack is my nearly-everyday bag, and spans the seasons well. The others below are year-round as well. I tend to only use my silver tote in the summer, and my dark brown tote in the cooler months — they each just feel more seasonal to me. I usually think more in terms of whether a bag adds to or complements an outfit than whether it is seasonal, unless it’s distinctly so — like a straw bag, which is very beachy/summery, or how faux fur would feel very wintry. The pink floral bag you show here looks very spring/summer to me, due to the very light color palette and the springy floral.

LJP put up a great post on handbags and scarves, and how many do we need? At the same time I was inspired to write an handbag post.

I watched one of my favorite author's/influencer's June video (Jennifer L. Scott) full of recipes, stationery, poems, etc. I noticed her handbag she featured, which was a pale, dusty blue Teddy Blake in crocodile, or crocodile print. It looked fitting for summer, then I suddenly remembered whites and brights have been approved for winter in clothing, so maybe she could also wear it in winter. She spends a lot of time in England, and the rest in Southern California, and it would look great in all weather, on all continents.

So I thought, now that we no longer need a black purse in winter, and a straw, white or light brown one in summer, what could we have if we had one purse, all year long? Can we get a little creative, think a little outside the box? Because pale blue is fun.

You can show something you already have, or something you want. Since I have a boring black purse, here are two that I would consider wearing all year long: a canvas tote with a graphic design, or a sharp floral print.

Here is the link to Jennifer's video--her purse is shown at about 2:00.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?.....038;t=209s
