I agree about clothing construction and shopping - but I have to tell you I can only wear denim with spandex in it. Otherwise, stomach cramps.

Also, never in my whole life was I ever permitted to wear flip flops. Only exception, camp showers. And after the shower, I had to immediately change shoes.

But this was before 1990. Waaaaaaaaay before.

hmmmmm, well this isn't quite how i remember it. i started working in the mid 80s, and i remember spending $30 or so a month on pantyhose, becauce they were required, and skirts/dresses were more of the everyday norm than pants, at least for work. they almost never fit well, were expensive, and i was always putting a finger thru them or snagging them on something. work clothing was always work clothing, and so you had to maintain 2 totally separate wardrobes. if a store was out of your size, well, they were out of your size, and so if you wore a fringe size, you were kind of stuck. and if i recalled, the fashion gods dicated a new skirt lenght every year!
not saying today is perfect and that i'm happy with everything fashion and shopping has to offer, but all in all, i find more plus than minus.

I'm so tired of jeans right now I don't particularly care one way or the other. I ordered a pair of denim ankle pants and a pair of looser fitting jeans that have a drawstring waist (for weekend wear). We'll see if those offer more comfort than what I've been wearing. Otherwise, I'll be totally done with jeans.

I've pretty much made sure I'll get through Spring and Summer without jeans, thanks to the ankle pants I bought on clearance at J Jill. Best of all is that what I bought is office appropriate, as I work in a casual office and don't need to wear dressy trousers or anything like that. I can wear, and have worn, jeans to work; but lately I've wanted to step things up a notch or two and be a little dressier.

I am laughing to myself because I am longing for the days of an all cotton jean. They last longer as well. Mens denim is still spandex free thankfully.
I think the new fabrics have their place and utility for sure so I am open to change.

I'm with you on that, particularly the part about sizes being consistent. Clothing lasted a lot longer back then, too.

What I don't miss about those days was shopping for jeans. Being short, it was hard back when I was a teenager and wore junior sized clothing. All the jeans were 6 inches too long, and my mother had to hem them. There wasn't any such thing as short, regular and long. Everything was just long.

we wore our levis or Calvins, wider leg or straight whatever the fashion gods dictated. they, once broken in, felt good, were cotton, and soft when worn a bit. Our shoes were almost always great, sometimes a little braking in was needed. we wore sensible heels,( 6 inch heels were unheard of ) athletic shoes for the gym and jogging, cross trainers (white), flip flops, or such were worn almost everywhere we were going to walk all day like to Disneyland. Skirts and dress length was dictated by the fashion gods too, but then came mini skirts. These were generally a no no in the work place, and certainly not worn to church.

We built our wardrobes around basics like A line skirts, or straight skirts (no such thing as pensil skirt (dumb word) , good white we called them shirts or blouses (no dump thing like button down. those were mens with button down collars), good pants or skirt suits, and blazers. If we had a special event we shopped in the special occasion department at the department store, and got great advise from the sales lady.

Clothes mostly fit, were made with ease, darts, and other well made sewing techniques. NO SPANDEX, to make things fir everyone where we had lumps or bumps they stretch around them. They always look great on the models as they aren't real US. They have no excess boobage, bulges around various places so nothing has to stretch a little to fit--But we wonder why they look so bad???Sizes were pretty much correct. Now even with size labels everything is pretty much small, medium and large. If you don't fit that mold things are made to stretch enough to go over those places, so we are OK with that..But I moss the good old days!
