Diana - I too have proportionately small and rounded shoulders and so the dropped shoulders on the cocoon coat overwhelm me. I had never thought of a swing coat before but now that you and Jennifer mentioned it, I'll have to try it out! I was thinking of a longer and thinner lapel, but that second Ellen Tracy coat is intriguing, and I love the camel colour!

Welcome to a fellow pear! I have similar coat fit issues, and like you, tend to go for classic, a-line shapes. I do find that most of the cocoon styles overwhelm me, because I have a rounded and proportionally smaller shoulder line. I tend to need something with defined shoulder seams, not the dropped or rounded shoulders found on most cocoon styles.

The swing coat, as mentioned above, is also an option. Depending on the style, it can somewhat mimic a cocoon coat.

You might want to try the Ellen Tracy Kimono coat pictured below. It's kind of a hybrid of swing and cocoon, and it fit me pretty well and I didn't even have to size up for hips like I usually do. (I didn't get it because I didn't love the colors, but I'm still considering it. It was nice and warm!). It comes in slightly different versions from different retailers (the finds are for the Lord and Taylor and Nordies' versions respectively). The one I'm trying in the photo is the L&T one.

One trick you might consider is that if a coat fits everywhere except at the hip button, which pulls because it is too tight, you can often move that button over an inch or so. It does depend on the cut of the coat, but I often find this solves the problem. I wouldn't try it if the coat actually won't button there, because it's likely that you won't be able to get enough room even with moving the button in that case.

Welcome!! Waving at my fellow Canuck!

That's a shame about the man coats/ cocoon coats. I do think a modified cocoon could work, but you're right that it might be tough to find in a petite size and the scale will be really important. Still, did you try the J. Crew ones yet?

I assume you have a great puffer coat? Or at least a puffer coat....I never feel mine is "great" after I have worn it six dozen times. ;)

I also feel like you can go more classic with a coat if you ensure the accessories are current looking.

Hi Roxanna! I am brand-new too - have only become a member in the last two weeks. Like you, I am a Canadian and the mom of a toddler. And like you, I am an hourglass-to-pear, and verging on petite (5'4").
I have the same issues as you with man coats, but I think the cocoon coats can work with people of our size and shape. I think the trick is to make sure the proportions of the coat are in proportion with your size - so not too long, with arms and shoulders that fit. I am not in the market for a new coat right now so haven't tried any cocoon coats recently, but I think it is worth trying some on. There may be some tailoring involved to get the length right, but I think it is worth a shot!
FWIW, if you want to try different shapes, I have had good success with swing coats - i.e. not coats that flare from the waist or hips, but those that flare right from the shoulders. I have a lovely one from MaxMara from a few years ago, and receive compliments every time I wear it.

Hi everyone! I've been reading YLF for years, but finally decided to take the plunge and join up as a member I am 38 with two two young kiddos (3 and 1), I live in Toronto and I work in Marketing for a Not-for-Profit. I love to dress up, experiment with colour and pattern and proportion. I like classic mixed with modern, luxe fabrications and finishes, streamlined looks and texture. So that's me :)

My question is this: as a petite hourglass/pear shape, i have a lot of fit n' flare coats. I wanted to try the new shapes from this season, but the man coats don't fit because the hips are too narrow and I'm afraid that cocoon coats will overwhelm me. Also, I need something fairly warm for my climate. Any suggestions?
