I don't have much, either! I do like both, but tend to be more of a "multi-use" sandal and boot person. It goes on a date, it goes to a meeting, it goes to a wedding, it goes dancing, it goes to the flea market.....

I’m really happy to see others’ boot collections; I think I am also at about a dozen. One is dressy, and one knee height. They are mostly from Jack Rogers and Cole Haan because I find them the most comfortable. Most of them are old but survived the shoe purge I had to do a couple of years ago when my feet decided to get a bit wider.

I haven’t found ankle boots appealing to buy recently. My last purchase was practical ones in 2022 and prior to that 2019. It’s partly the cost - ones I like are often $400 plus here - and partly that they all seem to look very similar. I think here that shoes (flats) and sneakers and sandals seem to have more cool and interesting styles.

Well, it's true we have a lot more rain in winter than you do...but otherwise your microclimate does not sound all that different to ours, except much colder in your (shortish) winters, so I'm still nonplussed about the paucity of boots, since you do a lot of walking in winter! Horses for courses, as Angie says. It could be that boots are strictly outdoor wear for you so you don't have "dressy" booties that are part of the outfit, which I understand. I think dressy (or dressier) booties are more of an urban need. Those who walk on trails etc. need a more rugged boot -- not the type you are wearing to complete an outfit, so to speak. I have both requirements where I live.

Boots are definitely my favorite of all footwear; I have close to 20 pairs. I also have a good number of casual sandals and sneakers. I am more limited with my choice of shoes that work between boots and sandal seasons- probably just 3 pairs of mules, 1 dressy pump and dressy black flats that were a recent addition.

A couple of my boots are 6-7 years old. Two new additions - Lemon Jelly rain boots lined and unlined. Got them at the end of the winter, worn once and don’t know how they will perform in a snow/slush. Really need a pair of dressy boots, a huge hole in my wardrobe.
Don’t wear sandals that much, flats are my shoes of choice for the summers.

Haha, chuckling at Jaimie’s comment!
I hang on to my shoes/boots forever… it’s rare for them to wear out. my favourite boots have been reheeled several times. I make the most mistakes in shoe purchases, so once I find something that works for me I’ll make the effort to keep it going.

I don't have photos of anything in my wardrobe - it all sounds like a lot of work . I kind of understand your small boot collection Carla, but you do a lot of walking still in winter and I'm surprised you don't alternate pair if you're out daily. However, I only own 2 pair of true outdoor boots too - the rest are all indoor/fall/"fashion" boots that I don't wear in snow.

I am SO particular about what I like in footwear that I visually eliminate 80% of what I see online because it's just another iteration of the same old boot (for example) I find it quite frustrating , actually. I suppose I'm a bit hamstrung by budget as the really cool stuff is usually way out of my price range.

I can see too how as we age, our options get smaller in number, and hence our personal collections do too. I probably have equal numbers of sneakers, shoes, and sandals , and don't need anything more at the moment . Boots I have fewer of , and what I do own seems to work for me right now. I just bought a great new pair of high shaft croc embossed print leather boots with a small heel and narrower squared off toe.....and am looking forward to wearing them in another month or so.

For those wondering about my modest boots repertoire - I live in a microclimate created by the geography of the location of the town - and we don’t seem to get that much precipitation! We went 65 days without rain this summer, and rarely have snow before Christmas. We shovel snow maybe 5x a year and it’s gone by April. Sidewalks and streets are often bare, even if there is snow on the ground. A raised sole sneaker with a good tread is sometimes better than a boot!

#1 Nov. 27 - no snow and flowers!

#2 Dec. 27 - this snow will be gone when the sun comes up

#3 April 7 - I’ve been in the garden as early as April 4, pruning and retraining the climbing roses!

Thanks for the inspo pics and links to your Finds. I’m seeing some sandals that might fit the bill!

I'm also on the bench. I have slightly more boots than sandals (9 boots, 7 sandals). The only reason I own more boots than sandals is because two of my boots are gear (horseback riding and hiking), but fashion wise, I'd actually be equal in number.

As far as how often the two categories are worn, I generally wear sandals more often than boots. We don't get enough cold weather days to wear boots often and half my boot collection is leftovers from living in a cold weather climate.

The knee high boots were only worn once or twice last winter, but I enjoyed them both times, and this style of boot is so hard to fit, I won't part with them despite the infrequent use. Both cowgirl boots are sentimental and again don't get much use but I won't part with them either.

Sandals fit my current climate best, but I have no interest in owning more. I have just enough to cover all my casual and dressy needs right now.

Both in hot and cold weather, my preferred daily shoe is the same as yours, sneakers! And that's where I focus when considering a new purchase.

Julie and I have similar climate - hot summers, cold winters. Luckily, I can wear sandals whenever I want. Unluckily, my feet are old and decrepit and can only withstand marshmallow softness. Crocs recovery slides and Oofos flip-flops both work for me now, in my casual life. I also got these red Clarks flip-flops. I get compliments whenever I wear them. For a “dressy” look, I can wear these Naturalizers that I’ve had for years. These last two are not as soft as the first two.

As for boots, I have lots and lots, but most don’t work anymore. These Born boots do. I also wear clogs a lot, and have them in several colors. I like being able to slip them on and off.

I need to experiment more with my boots. With my inserts, they all got too tight. I’m thinking maybe wearing thinner socks might be my solution.

My shoe collection is simple: 4 sandals, 4 sneakers, 4 clogs/low ankle booties, and 4 mid-calf or tall boots. I also have gear snow boots and hiking boots that I don't have finds for. Oh, and ski boots! :)

We have hot summers and cold winters, but since I need to wear covered shoes at work (in a lab) so I don't wear sandals much except at home or on vacation. I wear the light colored boots regularly in the summer.

I wear boots in winter and sandals in summer and sneakers year round. My house shoes are really sandals and new to my collection. I have 7 pair of boots and 5 pair sandals. I donated three pairs sandals this year because they were flat and not supportive so have less than I usually have. The taupe sandals were purchased nine years ago for my niece's
outdoor college graduation ceremony and worn last spring for her garden wedding. They aren't really comfortable for walking distances but are perfect for some events so they stay in my closet. The Moto boots and Docs are perfect for adding a bit of fun to an outfit so even though they are almost as many years old, they also stay. The Converse sneaker boots were worn every day and night on a nineteen day trip to Atlanta, Wash. DC, Philadelphia, and NYC in April and though they are not true boots but a hybrid, they deserve a mention because they did the job. Fun to see every one's collection. Your collection in compact and versatile. Janet's collection is large and reflects her edgy style. Sal's features a lot of sandals because of her climate. I seems that Dee lives where it is cool/cold most of the year but her heart belongs to sandals. It rains a lot where Angie lives so she needs and loves boots. My weather is almost always in the low 60'sF in winter and high 60'sF in summer so always pretty temperate weather so I wear both boots and sandals according to the season much like Suz although she probably gets more rain.

Like Angie, I'm amazed you get by with so few boots!

When I lived in Ontario, I owned precisely one pair of sneakers (strictly for the gym) for many years. Eventually I bought a fashion pair or two but they -- like any transitional shoe -- got almost no wear when I lived in Kingston.

These days, in a more temperate climate, I wear sneakers and oxfords and one one pair of loafers for about 5 months per year. Other than that, it's boots and sandals all the way!

Current booties and boots below. The La Canadienne tall boots are over a decade old and rarely worn but still in great shape and a great fit, so I keep. Of the booties, at least two pairs will be retired this year and I hope replaced, possibly 3. I'm in the market for a dressier silver bootie. If I can't get a good repair job on the Paul Green plaid boots, I will be in the market for a red or burgundy (or plaid!) boot, too.

I wear the bright orange Cole Haan sandals more than any others but they are almost worn out after two years, so will be replaced next year. The Eileen Fishers are older but going strong since I didn't wear them for a few years. The flat cream Cole Haans are my indoor sandals -- not really for outside. The Eccos are very old and only for the most casual situations -- trips to my friend's cabin, etc. The Ecco fishermans are new and really nice except they gave me an ankle blister so I need to figure out how to prevent that next season. The dressy Naturalizers are rarely worn and the heel may be too high for me now -- I will investigate next year and if they feel precarious, I'll pass them on.

Interesting Carla. I hope the boots turn up. Practical but refined and dressy is not always easy I know.

I have retired a pair of boots and sandals this year as they were worn out - and not repairable. My navy boot are almost there too so I will look for one additional pair of ankle boots. My sandal collection works but the heeled ones don’t get much wear.

Very interesting!

It's rather astounding to me Carla, that you live in Canada and have one one pair of boots!!! (And snow boots). Fascinating :)

I'm not a big sneaker person, although I do wear them and have four pairs. Just not that frequently. I'm Queen Loafers Instead of Sneakers!

As for sandals, I have one pair. And I only wear them in Italy and Greece.

Love wearing my sandals much more than my boots, but sadly, I live where the weather has my feet confined for more than 3/4's of the year.

Most of my boot collection. Some are nearly 20 years old. My tall boots haven’t been worn much in the last few years since I’m no longer wearing skinny jeans and I don’t wear skirts/dresses much in winter, but I’m reluctant to give them up because finding a good calf fit in tall boots can be so difficult.

I’m just the opposite. I do wear sneakers and have a nice collection of them, but I have more sandals and more boots, and not much in between (one pair of loafers, several very old pairs of oxfords that I can’t let go, and a pair of flat slingbacks). Here are most of my sandals.

Not at home right now Carla but there are a lot more of both than that! Wearing my 2025 red boots right now as very early spring here and still cold!

I’m on the bench…because I’m really just a sneakers person. I have exactly two pairs of boots, and two pairs of sandals. If I find the right dressy/refined leather boots to wear with skirts and dresses - I’ll add another pair. If I find the right low healed/flat tan or cognac sandal - I’ll add another pair. However, in the long run, I’m not a collector of either style of footwear.

Please share your boot and sandal style!
