Oh my, I've been pretty bad. Last year I was averaging 25-30 items a month. Mostly: blazers, cardigans, tops, and jeans. A few scarves and shoes went into the mix. Little to no handbags, belts or fashion jewelry.

This year I've cut down to 10-15 items a month and in the past 3 months that's dropped to 10 items or less. I'm currently shopping my closet and last month only purchased 3 items. This month I am allowing 1 item.

I was starting to get buried in my clothes. I easily had over 300 items. Right now I believe I am closer to 200? (I don't have my spreadsheet with me.) My goal is to be under 100 items in the next 6 months. I want to only own enough to wear an item once a month for the season. Ideally each item twice a month, but baby steps for me.

Part of the shift besides no longer wanting to be overwhelmed when getting dressed in the morning is my taste which has shifted from wanting lots of variety to higher quality pieces with more classic styles. Also, ever since I started tracking my clothes this year, I learned how little of my wardrobe I was wearing daily.

Good Lord, what a question. I consider it a slow month if I *only* get 3-4 boxes shipped to my house from online purchasing. ;-D

I'd say on average I add 2-3 pieces per month. In all honestly I probably did a bit more than that this past year, but my wardrobe was still in post YLF processing. I feel really good about my wardrobe now and in case anyone gives a hoot, here is what I have:

18 Dresses... (6 summer day, 6 dressier summer, 6 fall/winter)
6 jeans... + 5 "demoted" to wear around the house
4 shorts
1 skirts.. (+1 I plan to make)
12 summer blouses/tops
5 summer toppers (vests, ss cardigan, etc)
12 winter blouses/layering tops
6 pull over sweaters
6 cardigans
8 jackets (with allowance to acquire 1-2 more if I find some I see having wardrobe potential)
16 shoes (8 summer, 8 winter)

So, what does that total,, about 94? My goal is to replenish my wardrobe on a 3 year cycle, which would mean that I would replace about 31 items a year.. , so I can reasonably say that purchasing on average 2.5 items per month or 30 items per year should keep me more than reasonably outfitted and current. And, now that i"m really trying to buy better quality, I may find I get more than 3 years out of many pieces, especially jeans and jacket. We'll see.

** I realize I didn't count special occasion dresses, scarves, cami's, tanks, coats, bags, or other accessories, so I guess I need to bring my planned purchase count to 3 solid pieces per month.

OK, seriously now. Excluding the necessary undergarments, I'd have to say I purchase two or three items per month? How much I actually spend varies A LOT, though....especially if one of my purchases was footwear.

Hmmm... I buy about 5 things a week at the swap meet, but I resell maybe half of that, and I purge often.

For items that I spent actual money on...
This fall: three pairs of boots, one leather coat (birthday gift to self), orange top, orange blazer, faux shearling jacket, cougar skull necklace (x-mas gift to self to match dad's), cognac bag.

Last fall: moto boots, hiking/logging boots, tall black boots, black coat with furry trim.

This spring: turqoise sandals, black sandals... and that's all I can remember.

Summer is my dominant season, but it's always Fall when locked in with the air conditioning.

I think this season is heavier, because I'm dressing for a new work environment and have more $$.

I'm getting inspired to really think through what I actually need to keep my wardrobe fresh and updated, but not out of control. I can't say I've ever sat down and planned that I need, say 2 new dresses a year, one day and one evening, to keep the rotation fresh.
I would like to have 150 items but I have closer to 200 including all my shoes. Realistically I will update/purge about 15 or 20% each year but not much more.
Just for kicks, I tried crunching some numbers and coming up with amounts in clothing categories. Not sure if it'll shake out like this IRL but as a rough guideline, it seems sufficient for me. A dozen clothing items per season plus 2 accessories.
So at this rate, these amounts should keep me from accumulating more and staying within the one in one out framework.

Hmmm.
I have been tracking since I started revamping my wardrobe, 2 years ago. I have a spreadsheet (inspired by Kate - thank you!) which helps me keep track of needs and not duplicate things.
Hopefully the buying will slow down because it has to, financially, and because I really have filled in my wardrobe holes and created enough variation in my accessories. I have set up my budget quarterly so I can splurge, or spread out purchases.
Averaging annual:
6 pairs of shoes/boots
20-22 items of clothing (!) that seems like a lot
20 items of accessories - that includes jewelry, bags, funky socks, tights, belts

Well.
20-22 items of clothing is about 1/4 of my wardrobe. hmmm
Hopefully paying attention is already making me better about buying things that don't quite work.
I don't mind the accessories because in 2009 I just had a pile of scarves. Now I own handbags! I upgraded my bike bag to a beautiful leather one that should last forever.
I own 2 belts meant to hold clothes in, not up! Big advances.

I am aiming for 1/2-2/3 those quantities, and 1 in,1 out in the next year.

Well, I'm trying to start a wardrobe overhaul now that I'm doing being pregnant and having babies, so this year I probably purchased about 10-15 items.

jacket
ballet wedges
belt
2 work dresses
3 summer/casual dresses
2 cardigans
2 casual shirts
1 pair jeans
1 pair black dress pants

Some of these are "good enough for now" items as I develop my style and save money for more better, more permanent wardrobe items. I also did some major purging so I'm living with a pretty small wardrobe these days.

Normally I purchase way less (I hate, hate, hate spending money)! I think next year will be a larger amount as I will be in the midst of the overhaul, then hopefully in 2013 it will be back to a small amount each year.

Well...I replaced most of my wardrobe in the past year and a half. Most of it is in my spreadsheet, so here's what I can recall from the past year:

3 boots
2 booties
9 cardigans
5 dresses
3 jeans
2 leggings
5 sandals/open toed shoes (casual and dressy)
2 closed toe shoes
7 sleeveless/short sleeved tops
1 long sleeved top
2 tunics
3 layering long sleeved tops
1 wool coat
1 trench coat
1 denim jacket
10+ scarves (4 of which are high quality/cost more than $4)
2 belts
2 pendants, several pairs of earrings, several necklaces
3 handbags (1 of which has already gone to dust)

I'm not counting items I've bought recently that are still under deliberation or handknits.

Dresslover, what are your averages?? :)
I want to thank you for this question. It helps to see that I am acquiring 36 to 48 items a year at this pace. Granted, this first YLF year has been about updating a wardrobe and that entails more purchases than general upkeep. But I can see that I will be (or should be!) perfectly happy with half as many items coming into the closet next year. I realistically only expect to purge/replace perhaps 1/4 of my wardrobe year to year. Maybe less. So if I want to keep it manageable, 2 items a month is a great place to start!

I'll wager I guess at an average of 3 or 4 per month this year. I gave myself a budget for the first time ever, and also tried to aim for quality and not necessarily the most cheap items I could get for $125. I do still shop sales and bargains whenever possible, though. I tend to go in phases - shoes for a while, then on to tops, then maybe I'll get on a skirts kick. I rarely buy belts, scarves, purses. I think I have bought one of each this entire year - oh wait, 2 bags. One still hasn't been used

Not averages, and only based on what I still own:

2010: 33 clothes, 13 accessories, 6 shoes, and 13 jewelry, total of 65
2011: 27 clothes, 4 accessories, 2 shoes, and 4 jewelry, total of 37 (so far)
2012 plan: 25 clothes, 2 accessories, 2 shoes, 3 jewelry, total of 32

2010 was a major reset
2011 is closer to what I'm shooting for
2012's plan should be sustainable, assuming that I'm buying clothes that last 2-3 years, shoes that last a 1-2 years, and accessories and jewelry that last a long time.

Interesting question! I'm not sure about clothes but I do know that I purchase at least 1 pair of shoes or boots a month. I'm still trying to define my style & what suits my current shape & am bit more haphazard about clothing shopping!

I could repeat Rita's response word for word.

I'd be a little afraid to count it all up. Although an even larger amount has left my wardrobe.

Gosh, I don't know, but it's an interesting question. I'm trying to pare down my shopping and only buy clothes that I really love AND will wear.

I have no idea, but I will be interested in hearing others' responses!

The reason I'm so clueless about myself is that for quite a number of years I scarcely bought anything. Then I lost weight, and now I HAVE to buy a lot in order to have things to wear, so I'm purchasing far more than I would in a typical year. Or so I think. Maybe I'll continue this way, simply swapping out less good items for better ones as I build the wardrobe?

I do know that I will very likely buy far more for my dominant seasons: fall/winter/early spring (i.e. for cool and cold weather months). I need fewer items for summer because it is a shorter season where I live.

Not sure how to answer that, I am still in the midst of a wardrobe overhaul. I am replacing 95%of my pre-YLF clothes due to size change and style evolution. I hope this year is an anomaly. It has been a pricey exercise.

How many fashion-related items do you purchase per year? How does this number breakdown between seasons, for example is it an equal number or somewhat disparate?

For the sake of discussion, foundation garments (bras, underwear, tights, spanx, layering garments) and gear for workouts/outdoor activities are excluded from the count as those are necessity type items. Clothing, shoes, handbags, jewelry, belts, hats, scarves, etc. all count.

I'm interested in the replies as I think this will be pretty insightful!
