Total peanut gallery comment - Valextra really sounds like some sort of a pill to me, one where the guy says really fast "results no more effective than placebo." However, they make a nice bag. Very modern.

You know I might go for that really exclusive old school luxury company.
There is some leather goods company, which the name escapes me that is supposedly better than Hermes. Its styles are not flashy and only really know buy those in the know.

ETA it might be Loewe, but for some reason I thought it started with a V.

Definitely old fashion house. I would get one or more hermes scarves, plus an enamel bracelet. Or some custom ferragamo vara pumps. A burberry trench and cashmere muffler. A loro piana Ruana or coat. A gucci flora print silk scarf. So, not only iconic house but iconic item. ( not sure how far $2000 would go with some of these things!)

quietgirl - another classic! It's an interesting question - how fast would something from The Row go out of style? I think Row style would work for me many years to come (but I could be wrong), but part of my hesitation with them is... where is the shop? where is the service? I don't feel like they have a full operation behind them...

I know that quality shoes make an outfit. However they are a LONG way from most people's eyes. If I was spending $2,000 I would probably buy a classic designer bag.

But oops, that wasn't the question, was it? I think I would go with a classic style..regardless of the designer. I would want to get many years of enjoyment from my purchase!

Omg, Karie. I LOVE that cocoon coat. And it's puffy :D

Anna - You know, as soon as the post left my fingertips, I thought about that. You're right things aren't the same. They don't do so much bread-and-butter staples. And/or their staples aren't their bread-and-butter. Always something new and different. Much more about manufacturing than artisan work.

Diana - That's an idea. I wonder if I could stretch my imagination that way more often.

E - Go sensible governess voice!! I like the idea of that.

Lyn, Runcarla - So old for the style. Interesting!

rabbit - Wearable art... does that mean no *house* at all? Hmm.

shevia - On the subject of wearable art... You know, I think the Japanese designers are artists first...

Echo, amiable - Maybe that's part of it for me, part of being able to get the same thing ten years later - not feeling that newer designers are established and here to stay. Also the shopping experience seems very different to me, altho the shops are all pretty mall-ified now.

IK - A vote for Helmut!

Thistle - Lol. Yeah, reality is, I have a lot of other things to do with $2000 in one go than clothes.

Mo - Well, I have to agree that some of the mystique is bewildering. The hype. In reality, I liken it to the chicken sticks I give Lilypup the dog for treats. There was a local lady who drove out to the farms for the chicken and then dehydrated them in her kitchen. I went to the rude lady's chi-chi store and bought these chicken treats for as long as chicken stick lady was in business. I could have gone to the fawning guy's chi-chi store and done something different every month - seaweed, blueberry, ollalabery (sp?), etc. etc. But as Anna points out, I'm somewhat delusional about how steady the product is at these "old" places.

I definitely prefer edgy over classic, and while perhaps this should not be the case, I have an extreme dislike for Karl Lagerfeld, which makes it next to impossible for me to stomach buying Chanel. I'm not terribly fond of Marc Jacobs, either, though LV has never really been my cuppa. Alexander McQueen tops my lists, though, so I guess that counts as new. But I do like Gucci, and I am also quite fond of Balmain.

Most newer designers aren't yet established as designers in my head yet, which makes it that much harder for me to spend the money on trendier labels. It seems like many of them want to step right up into the big leagues without paying any dues first, kwim?

I think I'd go for something old and classic, but I'm not a very edgy dresser, so I think it speaks to something that would work well in my wardrobe (Burberry trench) as opposed to something really expensive that would stick out (uh... silk romper?)

Oh furniture is a whole subject in and of itself. But I have the same problem there too. I went traditional as regards the sofa because, in my head, I led with function. Now I wonder. What's a bruised shin in comparison to vision?

Old. Because I like the heritage aspect, enjoy the 'English country' look anyway, and my style is the polar opposite of edgy. (That being said...I don't actually know what fashion houses are doing, so maybe the old ones are as edgy as the new ones? In that case, I'd go with vintage.)

I have a bit of stodginess in me too...I think of it as the sensible governess voice.

New. I'd probably buy a piece of somewhat wearable art. It could actually be vintage and from an older label, but it would need to look fairly unique, my bias is to only geek out over unobtrusive unchanging minimalism when it comes to furniture -- and then to stalk it secondhand.

Well, a girl can dream!

I was going to say $1000 - but then I thought about the inflation. I'm figuring/hoping $2000 should get you a pair of pants in today's world. Hahaha!

Which brings up the fact I haven't seen the price of a pair of Gucci loafers in a long time. It may offend me. Lol.
