I like this approach. Perhaps complemented by some sort of notice highlighting that the thread is quite old.

And we definitely need better search.

The other way to help users to not be posting on old threads is once we are able to see - or even sort by - the date of the posting, in the description of the thread we're about to open. I've tried searching by including the year 2015 in the search phrase, but that doesn't work so well, because the copyright says 2015 on every page

Sometimes I deliberately post on an old thread if it is unique, valuable and still relevant, to bump the topic to current discussion.

Thanks. And yes, I've seen the spam comment resurrect a thread from time to time. Definitely something to think about. Thank you for the suggestion.

It seems to happen weekly? Sometimes more or less? I'm not sure. Either a newer member comments because they search the subject and don't see the date perhaps, or sometimes they seem to pop up on the front page on their own --maybe a removed spam comment or something.

ETA: just scanning these are some I noticed from the last two days for example, with the age of the original post:

Yes, something like that would be good. How often do you think that happens?

This is just something I was wondering, but something that might be nice at some point is to get a message or pop up or something when you are commenting on an old (say a year or six months or something) post? I think this may confuse people fairly often if they forget to check the date.
