Oh Tam and San, we could start a thread in those types of words. My nerves are jolted every time people say that their child “bonked” their head” , or that they had “bangs” cut. But the use of the word “fanny” really cracks me up. Never a dull moment!

I am having many laughs over the use of that word. We have another "f" word and if it was used openly I would about die too. Funny!!! What we learn here!!

How fascinating. I am coming to understand how important tailoring is. What fun to learn about it, although I'm not sure I would have the patience to measure carefully. Hemming my jeans is the biggest challenge I take on! Can't wait to hear more.

Shiny is definitely right about that. Curved waistbands are for curved figures. No one here ever believes me when I say I have a bubbly butt but it must be true because most rises are too low for me...not just in the front but in the back too. When I had less of a tummy, the comfortable difference for me was about 7"! Now it's down to 5", but not because my butt is any smaller--only because my tum is bigger.

That's why I gave my Matchstick jeans away. The front rise was 7" and the back was 11". Both were way too low, and the difference was only 4".

San, it's great that you're learning this. Not only does it seem like you're having fun, but the way you're dissecting jeans, you'll probably solve a lot of fit mysteries. Let us know what else you learn!

This is too funny! I never knew what fanny was slang for in the UK etc...!

I have the opposite problem; jeans like your husbands with lots of "swoop" or a higher waistband in the back are much better for my generously shapely behind (which I love, btw). Otherwise I end up with a lot of show when I bend over!

As for this not being a terribly complicated alteration, I agree with you Shiny. Now that we know to take out the extra fabric horizontaly rather than vertically as Joy mentioned earlier.
Also the instructor said that when she says take out a quarter of an inch she is not mistaking. Sometimes it only takes that minute amount to do the trick.
In Orange County her job as assistant to the teacher at the college was to fit an average of 5 people a day all week. After that she became the teacher when the other retired. She is really fun to watch in action because she has seen it all. I'm sure after a while you see all bodies as good, just needing skimming in some areas with fabric. Gotta love it.

Oh Lee I envy you having a ba-donk-a-donk. You are so lucky.
As for the classes, these are being held at a sewing/vacumn store where they really want to draw people in for more sales. The teacher is retired from a college in Orange County CA, so I feel extremely fortunate to have her here at our local hangout giving classes. If you are interested you might check a community college to see if they have tailoring classes. It is awesome to learn their secrets.
Shiny I am so glad to have a compatriot in the slim hip club!!! It sounds like you have figured alot of this out on your own from trial and error. The jeans made by Tommy Hilfiger that the instructor brought in as a bad sample were severely swooped from front to back. She said, "We are not built like that, if anything we are built so the waistband should be a little lower in the back". She said, "It's like a recipe that gets handed down from generation to generation that just keeps getting repeated, right or wrong."

Thanks for the visual!! This is exactly my issue too. I figured out long ago that jeans that were close to the same rise in the back as the front were best fitting and most flattering for me. The Huttons are indeed like this!

This doesn't look like a terribly complicated alteration.

http://i477.photobucket.com/al.....0_0133.jpg
This is a picture of the practice jeans with the tuck taken out for my flat butt, which I then transfered to my tissue pattern before cutting the denim.

http://i477.photobucket.com/al.....0_0135.jpg
These are my husbands jeans with alot of swoop on the waistband from front to back meaning alot of fabric in the butt.

http://i477.photobucket.com/al.....0_0134.jpg
These are my David Kahn and COH jeans which show much less swoop from front to back. However when they are folded this way I can see that the DK's have more fabric in the hip curve which is probably not best for me.

http://i477.photobucket.com/al.....0_0137.jpg
This is my practice shirt with wrinkles. The fit is good but I would add a dart at each back shoulder to add more room for arm movement. I can see that the button placement is bad too.

To alter my pre made jeans, the instructor said the easy fix is to take off the waistband in the back and cut a half inch from the center to nothing at the side seams, then re attach the waist band. This is then supposed to pull the pants up in the back. I haven't tried it. The whole process is, well, a process. We make a pair and each pair we make after we might continue to fine tune the pattern.
I will try to take some pictures and see if I come up with something that tells a story. I am not the pro by any means. This instructor really knows her stuff. She brought a pair of Tommy Hilfiger jeans in and folded them side seam to side seam to show that the back waistband rides much higher than the front, which she says is so wrong.
With some of her other students who are built different than me she would have them cut the pattern and tape in tissue paper to add room where needed.
Do you see the model to the right for pzi Jeans? I don't have anything to fill out that much fabric in the back like she does.

My tailor did exactly the same thing recently with a pair of black slacks that was a little roomy on me, with excellent results.

It was also very cheap, which gives me the impression that it shouldn't be too difficult an alteration?

Very interesting! As a fellow flat fanny, I hear you. It would be awesome to be able to make your own pants to fit. My tailor tried to take fabric out verically at the center seam. That doesn't work very well and I ended up donating those pants. What your instructor says makes sense but sounds like it needs to be done in making the pants, not an alteration.

San, I would love it if you could take some photos of this so we can visualize. I have a hunch I know what you're talking about (having analyzed "jeans that don't fit me well vs jeans that fit better"), but I am not sure if I have it right. This doesn't sound like an easy alteration to make on clothes though - more like something you have to start from scratch with?

I learned something in my pattern fitting class that I would like to share. We are making a pair of jeans now. We start with buying a pattern and then making a mock up (called a sloaper) out of cheap fabric to try on. The instructor looked at my behind in my sloaper and said "We're going to have to take a tuck in your pants." I asked "why" and she said "flat fannie". Hmmm. I laughed. So this is why I have such a difficult time getting dressed and my $150 jeans have to be covered up in the back. I had to take my paper pattern and slice it across the back from within one eigth inch from the side to side, under the pockets, then overlap the tissue paper to take a half inch out of the amount of fabric in the middle of the butt.
I thought possibly this story could help some of you other "flat fannies" understand the why of the fitting problem. Hope it helps.
I asked the intructor about the pair of designer jeans I was wearing and she said they also needed to be taken apart and have the extra fabric taken out to fit properly.
