So glad to hear that many are having great experiences. I have had a bunch of health issues over the years and have seen the spectrum. I have also fired doctors in extremely stressful situations.
I have an awesome dentist, too, now that we’re on the subject. Love love love him. He makes crowns on the spot and teaches the process at the U of Md. best dentist ever, and he’s jolly.

Well, not a doctor per say, my dentist is somewhat like that too! Extremely direct, chatty, very humorous, and extremely healthy for someone reaching his 60s, although it can be hard to actually have a conversation or reply him when you're on the chair with your mouth hanging open and he's scaling your teeth while asking you what your thoughts are on the country's education system.

My primary care provider is a nurse practitioner who spends time actually listening to me. I'm a recovering addict, so when I go to her for my sciatica or shoulder pain, she actually remembers that I'm an addict and prescribes something appropriately non-narcotic for pain management. She is pretty wonderful and I'm glad you have somebody that wonderful too!

My GP is also my gyn and she is amazing. We were pregnant at the same time, and our kids attended YMCA summer camp together (she requested they be in the same group). She has been my dr. for years and is also the dr. to my kids. Then again, I live in a small town, and all the practitioners in the office are the same way. When we have emergencies we see the NP in the office, and she is similar.

I rarely see a dr., but when I go in, I feel like it has been a week since my last appointment. It's a rare thing to love your dr., so good for you!

YES. I like my GYN very much. She takes time to talk with me after our exam too. I also like my GP -- he's very attentive and helpful, takes time to listen and to explain things to me, so I'm very thankful.

I have a new dentist -- the first new dentist I've had in my life! Seriously, my old dentist, who was the only one I could ever remember having (I think we started as a family going to him when I was six), retired last year. I almost cried (mainly because it's one less reason to drive up to the neighborhood where I grew up, and one more connection to my late mom that's now gone). But my new dentist seems pretty good. She's very bossy, which might be a good thing for me because I tend to, um, forget to schedule the frequent appointments I should stick with.

My gyn is a gem, too. He's about 72, lean and fit, and treats me like a favorite patient -- he probably treats everyone as a favorite, but it makes it so comfortable to talk with him about anything going on. In health or in life!

I think I should clone him, so I'll never be without a good dr.

I have a male family doctor and a female gynecologist and both are wonderful. They talk to me about everything, asking about family and work and remembering everything that we discussed previously without consulting their notes. It feels nice to be treated as human being.

Funny, I had my annual gyn check up this morning. At 9 am the office was packed with women of all ages (pregnant and not pregnant). The practice has 8 ob/gyns, but I have been seeing my doctor for over 24 years (he delivered my DD) and was in practice with a doctor I originally saw who later stopped practicing medicine and taught instead.

He and I talk about everything as well. He was there for me when I miscarried over 25 years ago, calling once a day to check up on my well being and state of mind. We are around the same ago (early 60s) and I hope he does not retire anytime soon.

I do miss my English GP who retired. She was unhurried, unflappable and unexcited. My new GP seems ok; I have only seen her once. But now, my specialists - they have all always been pushy, mean and ridiculous. When I was 13, one told me he was gonna fix me and I was gonna become a cheerleader. One brought in a student to have a look at my eye lids, as a prime example of the results of miscegenation. One was always trying to change several things at once about my insulin regimen so you could never say with any certainty ‘this’ causes ‘that.’ One wanted me to go in for expensive blood tests every two weeks for something that nothing can be done about. Lists goes on...

FAB...

let me start by saying, i hate going to the doctor, I avoid it as much as possible. when I moved to the city i live in now, i went about 1.5years without a doctor, and then thought that I should find in GP, just in case, got a recommendation, had a check up and then 6 months later, had what I thought was an issue with a bee sting...well the doctor didn't see it as an issue and made me feel stupid...so as we say here...NEXT...then I was doctor less again for about 2 years, and then i needed to find a doctor...and found a local health center, and a wonderful doctor. she talks to me, seems to remember me, even thought I don't see her more than once a year or so....and the funny thing is, I think part of the reason that she is so wonderful is because it turns out this health center is a open to, and willing to treat everyone regardless of there ability to pay....

Generally, I think female GPs today are wonderful. Your experience Laurie, is my regular experience and I have come to expect it. We have two that we have been seeing for years here in Seattle, and they are AMAZING. I love our city hospital too. It's very diverse and a bit gritty. I feel soooo comfortable and at home there. The care and service is sublime. One of our GP's is American and the other Nigerian. It's hard to get an appointment with them though - they are very popular, and for good reason.

I would love a doctor like that!!! My family doctor in Hamilton where I use to live was extraordinary. He was amazing. I miss him so much. I am now without a doctor. I have just removed myself from the doctor's care I moved to in our new home. He was very rude to me. Extremely.
I worked in Health Care for 35 years, I teach in a medical school and Master's Program for Health Professionals and I think all patients should be treated with respect. Every single one of them. Imagine that!!!! Sorry for the rant.
Fortunately, that is the only negative experience I have had with a doctor.

It's about the $, but they are still out there. It's worth it to shop around if you're able to do so. My old obgyn was like that and I'm grateful to say my new one is too.
I have "fired" several doctors when I didn't feel they took enough time or had my best interests at heart.

I really appreciate this post because I'm in that mid life that moment where I am taking care of both older and new life. I would love to have a doctor like that so I am looking for one but it is hard in this day and age where everything is so at the speed of light Millennial. The bedside manner is gone which I really don't care about but it is that conversation that you speak of that's what I'm looking for interesting thank you for your testimony I guess I'll keep on looking

Laurie- It is so wonderful in this day and age to find a doctor who will take time to listen and not be rushed by insurance and numbers game. Yours sounds like a keeper and yes it is sad that you may lose him to retirement. It is nice that you can talk openly and honestly- some women can't or won't.
Before he retires make sure to ask him for recommendation-not who is taking over his practice but who will strike the same cord with you.
Otherwise- ask nurses in the area- they know who to use and who to avoid. When I move to a new area that is how I find doctors.
My "Mr Wonderful" is my cardiologist- everyone I recommend him to for a second opinion drop their first and moves to him.LOL
I use to have a gyn that was Ms Wonderful- she transferred into new group and now does the insurance and numbers game instead of good patient care- sad. So I am moving on.
Stay well and great that you are making your health a priority.

I had a long overdue annual at the gynecologist yesterday. He is so remarkable, especially in this day and age of healthcare, I just wanted to share. He's in his 60's with only the slightest hint that he "might start thinking about" retirement. He's always focused on gyn, rather than ob, so he's mainly talking to us ladies of a certain age all day long. And that's my reason for this post -- he talks to us. After the prelim blood pressure, etc., I go into his office. We talk for 20 full minutes about my general health and what is going on in my life while he takes a lot of notes. He's very funny and extremely straight-forward to the point of being blunt at times, and I appreciate his candor. We have talked a lot in the past few years about aging parents and young adult kids. Yesterday we focused on the urgency of maintaining the strength of marriage during this time of being pulled at both ends of the spectrum. And then he does a 7 minute physical exam and sends me on my way. Why does this have to be remarkable? We are whole people, not just reproductive organs! Here's to Dr. T! Hope everyone has at least 1 of these doctors in your cadre of health care professionals.
