That will work perfectly! Beautiful skirt. I think they make a wrap a faux wrap to eliminate the fussiness but personally I like the option to loosen skirts at the waist.

Hah, I see you've done it soooo right-was a bit nervous for having to do that...I never let my clothes bossing me around (an expression I learned from Angie!) but have also made some mistakes:-( during altering my clothes -anyway- I knew you are a pro! Love the result-and the puffer vest is fab!

Suntiger, I agree. This design is a feature, not a bug.

And my work is done, for the time being at least. I opened up the stitches, very carefully so as not to damage the fabric, and hand sewed ribbon ties to the inside. The buckle on the waistband seems to be quite secure, so I think this is good enough for fully adjustable arrangement while I lose weight. I may add snaps in the future, depending on how this performs.

Phew!

I think I would prefer a faux wrap skirt actually! I have problems with wraps getting loose during the day and having to fix them whenever I go to the loo. So could be a feature not a bug!
But you did make me laugh

Bijou, thanks! I do my best. I rarely feel like that in real life, so it’s nice to bask in the reflected glory of my glamorous alter ego, hehe.

Janet, that skirt looks like a veritable winter workhorse to me. My faux leather midi skirt was a wild card when I bought it and now it’s really showing the wear. I’m already wondering how to replace it.

MB, you make a good point about the vests. The two items look superficially similar, but I can already see how different they are in terms of proportion, and what I want from each of them. Might be a topic for a Style Lab, hmm….

Shevia, too funny I was just thinking, I’m never sure if having a Uniqlo flagship store five minutes from my front door is a good thing or a bad thing. But it has been brilliant to get first dibs on the +J collections.

Anyway, I made a couple of pics of the waistband, so you can see what I’m dealing with. Wish me luck…

Ooooh, I hope we'll get to see some WIW's or style labs, Approprio! Call me an enabler, but if you're regularly wearing a black quilted vest, then perhaps it's a signature item in your look, so I see no reason not to have a second one in the rotation.

How's that for enabling? :D

The skirt... oooh, that's maddening that there's a zipper. But the pleating in the stock photo looks so yummy and perfect. If it looks that good in real-time, then I'm with you on "I can make this work". Time to channel your inner MacGyver! (Or Tim Gunn).

Love the vest! Telling myself I do not need another puffer vest.

The skirt sounds a little confusing, but it seems you have it figured out! I look forward to seeing it in action. I like wrap skirts in theory but the devil is in the details — many of them just don’t have enough fabric, so you flash the world when you sit down, or there’s a strong breeze. I did just get this one — a surprise of a find at a local boutique during their anniversary sale. It is at least one size larger than my usual size so I almost didn’t try it on, but the extra fabric actually works in this case — I just need to move the inside waist button a bit to make it work.

Thanks Sally, Katerina. Having slept on it, I’m more or less convinced the skirt has been designed to enable this specific alteration. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense, so I’m feeling a lot happier about taking the plunge. I should know better than to question the genius of Jil.

Irina, I’m still figuring out the styling options on the vest. I think a lot depends on what proportions you want, but having seen your WIW’s, I’d say give it a go. While it may look like a down vest, the cut and silhouette is closer to a 1950’s swing back coat. Once I have the measure of the thing, I’ll do a more detailed review.

Diana, yes! It does work very well, although I think the words you used were: a lot of skirt. I sized down for what I felt was a more flattering profile, and now it no longer fits. Although, it is closer to fitting today than it was two weeks ago, which is encouraging.

I have no idea about wrap wastes, faux or real, and no clue about altering, so I am of no help here. But you certainly seem to know what you are doing. Go for it and enjoy your wonderful new pieces!

Ha! I think we did. Also uniqlo! I do think that particular skirt would not work without being a true wrap and it’s long/heavy enough not to blow open, but I will say that the ties annoy me a lot sometimes!

Rachylou, I should make some photos when I do the operation. The construction is a bit of a puzzle, and at first I wondered if an alteration could be done. And yes. Vest is awesome. I shall wear it for both of us.

Diana, yes, isn’t it just? I don’t think I’ve ever given it this much thought before, but I like a wrap skirt for more than the adaptability. Freedom maybe? Something I can’t quite articulate.

And didn’t we both buy the same JW Anderson wrap skirt that time?

CarolS, cheers! Suz, cat2, now it’s beginning to make sense. This is definitely not a faux wrap, it’s a wrap skirt with a closed waistband. I think they must be hedging their bets and trying to please as many people as possible, making something that can be very easily altered. But if you wanted a faux wrap, you might also be a bit put out.

Angie, it was not an easy call, believe me! In the end, I decided on the black for the effect of proportion and texture when layered with other black garments. But I was very tempted by the blue.

As for the wind, well, layers under and over, woolly tights and thermal leggings in the winter. Wrap skirts should not work on the bike either, but for some reason they do.

It's interesting to hear people's opinions on wrap skirts! I much prefer a faux wrap myself and not having to worry about ties coming untied and making lumps under my tops, or the opening blowing open in the wind.

With real wrap skirts I've often resorted to just sewing them closed myself.

That puffer vest is so awesome. I must say I also don’t understand how a pleated wrap skirt would work when it has a zipper. Is the wrap part real then? Do you leave in the zipper and do some other sewing on the wrap part?

That is frustrating about the skirt, but it looks so lovely it might be worth the alteration. A bit like cat2, I actually prefer faux wraps because they don't blow open in the wind -- that is my issue with wraps!

JAileen: it’s the strangest thing. It’s so obviously designed to be adjustable. It has other features, like a belt with an adjustable buckle and a placket on the inside to tame the wrap. Then it goes weird at the waistband.

I think Angie must be right. A pandemic induced blunder. I will forgive, fix, and enjoy the skirt.

Thanks all. I am pretty sure this can be made to work. I just needed to vent a bit first.

Tanya, exactly! Adjustable waistbands are the best, and I would say that even if I weren’t carrying a few more kilos than usual.

Angie, you’re right. Forgiveness and gratitude is where it’s at. I should give thanks for all these lovely items rescuing my wardrobe.

The vest is available in a very handsome navy blue, which I very nearly went for, and a grey which was lighter than I would have liked. I am inclined to embrace black right now for reasons of *ahem* personal branding, but it’s not without its risks.

Irina, I think it will be an easy fix. And I never have a problem altering pieces I’ve thrifted or bought on deep discount. For some reason I’m having to screw up my courage on this one. Is it because I paid full price for it?

Lisa P, I think I’m going to suck it up and make the alteration, because it’s as close to perfect as I am going to get. Once I get the wrap working, I think it will be fine. But I have to screw up my courage first.

The whole advantage of a wrap skirt is the adjustability. A faux wrap is worse than no wrap at all. I wore my Patagonia skort on a windy day and the skirt part is a faux wrap. It’s great unless it’s windy. And it wasn’t great. The vest looks great for you.

Great vest ! Not sure I understand a pleated skirt in a wrap styling, but what do I know. Wouldn't that add a lot of extra bulk where it doubles over? Anyways, send it back. You'll find another one - hopefully ?

Faux wrap skirt? Hmmm, doesn't make much sense to me. Seems like an easy fix, though. Glad the vest works for you. I love it!
I placed an order first thing on the morning of the release. I like many things from the collection but sadly don't need most of it or know they will not fit me. I ordered a bag, a hat and a wool sweater.

I can sooooo see you in the vest! LOVE. Did it come in a version other than black? If it's a wardrobe essential for you - milk it.

Aren't faux wrap skirts annoying! I vote forgive Uniqlo for making a pandemic-induced wrap blunder, and enjoy the vest

Gorgeous items, both of them, and totally suited to your style. I have been eying that skirt too but it was sold out in my size.

I totally hear your annoyance about the fake/real wrap business. I love wrap anything and they work for my body type, however they have to be real, adjustable wraps to actually work right. I cannot count the number of times I ordered a wrap item and the wrap turned out to be faux/non-adjustable etc, which made it worse that a non-wrap item would have been. They all went back. I hope you decide to do some surgery on that skirt, and that it works out!

Or, when is a wrap not a wrap?

So yesterday morning, I hightailed off to our local branch for the much vaunted arrival of another +J collection, and grabbed the two pieces I had earmarked as destined for my wardrobe.

The quilted vest did not disappoint. Beautifully cut and surprisingly, quite flattering, it is the very thing. I ended up buying it in black, which makes it a duplicate. Or an upgrade, depending on how you look at it. Now I have two black quilted vests. I am trying to convince myself they do different things, and that I shouldn’t let go of a closet workhorse for this fancy new arrival which is looking like a keeper. Or not yet at least.

That is not the problem, though.

The problem is this very lovely plisse skirt. This was supposed to be a wrap skirt, and in my effort to escape the scrum, I failed to notice that for reasons I cannot fathom, they closed the waistband and fastened the thing with a zipper. The only rationale I can think of is to preserve the shape of the hem, which is feeble if you ask me, because it doesn’t even match to begin with. To all intents and purposes, this is a wrap skirt. With the wrap stitched into the waistband.

Like, why, Uniqlo? Why?? You promised me a wrap skirt. And as far as I can tell, that’s exactly what you made, until some bright spark decided to stitch it closed. Seriously, is your skirt factory being held to ransom by the Worshipful Company of Zipper Inserters?

It looks like the simplest procedure to open up the seam, release the waistband and add a couple of snap fasteners, but that’s not the point. The point is that feeling when a trusted brand lets you down, and you have to take the scissors to a lovely new skirt.

By the grace of the Goddess, grant me the will to make the first incision. I may never wear it otherwise.
