Janet - I know, Mr. A feels the same about the deer and our plantings.

Bodie is curiously impervious to the lure of rabbits and will zip right past a rabbit to go after a chipmunk or squirrel. We have many stone walls and he will shove his little snout deep into the spaces between stones, hunting. Our concern is that he will either get his nose bitten by whatever's hiding there, he'll find a hornet's nest, or he'll corner a skunk (they love stone walls).

Oh, around here we have so many deer that they’re pretty much seen as pests! They eat our gardens and regularly wander into the highway nearby and get hit by cars. Hunting is very limited, and they have no natural predators here, so they are seriously overpopulated.

Still, it makes me sad when I see one injured or killed. And I like seeing them out in the woods (not in our yard, where they used to find an enormous salad bar until my husband extended the height of our fences!). Our latest issue though is…bunnies! A mama bunny decided to have her babies somewhere in our back yard, and unfortunately our dog Woody found two of the babies and, well, it did not end well for them. He just doesn’t know better (he’s sweet but not too smart). Mama bunny seems to have moved out of the yard since them (the kale is now once again growing!), so I’m hoping future bunny generations will stick with nesting locations outside of our fence!

Now if we could also get Woody to leave the turtles alone too! He just wants to hunt all the wildlife, unfortunately. He even barks at big birds overhead.

Fawn update: yesterday morning, Mr. A encountered Mama plus Skippy (all fawns are Skippy to me) out by my raised beds. Mama immediately jumped the fence to the front yard, where I'm sure she found a good spot to hide out and watch her baby.

This gave Mr. A a chance to open our gates wide and let the fawn walk through. Then he closed them again, so now Mama has to hide Skippy somewhere in the front yard (there are plenty of good places).

We drive up the driveway at about 1/2 MPH just in case s/he's walking around.

We have also had a mama snapping turtle lay her eggs up by our barn. Mr. A put a flag on the spot, since the incubation period is about 90 days.

A project for soon is to shield the eggs (underground) from predators, which we have in abundance: crows, raccoons, woodchucks. Apparently this is done with wooden stakes and chicken wire.

Awww! We have so many deer where I live. I see herds of them every day.
Sometimes they're close to rt 50 (the major highway) though, which scares me.

Echo, EXACTLY. The guidance here on fawns is that even if you hear distress cries, leave them alone at least 24 hours and just hope that mama hasn't been killed by a car. If she's still alive, she WILL return.

Adorable! I hope the drivers around your house are safe.

There have been numerous public service announcements and radio programs and television snippets on the news here about leaving baby animals ALONE. Apparently too many people pick up, transport or otherwise disturb infant wildlife, assuming they are abandoned. The reality is just that many animals spend a lot of time away from their babies!

The drivers, Lord. I take my life in my hands getting the mail.

Last summer, I watched one of our (twin) fawns freeze in the middle of the road as two cars gunned their engines to get up the hill. Fortunately, whoever was in front slammed on her brakes and waited.

Oh how precious. Hoping Mama doesn't cause too much stress for your little one, and that the drivers learn some sense ... wishful thinking, I know!

April, I'm sorry this brings stress for all of you too - humans, doggies and deer. I wish you luck navigating the situation and keeping Bodie safe.

If we have a problem with our fence, the deer find their way into our backyard. We haven't had fawns, but we have seen some with amazing antlers. They also love our agapanthus.

So sweet! We live in the country but do have a "corner" so two roads that the deer must navigate. Almost every year a mama parks her fawn and spends the day grazing then comes back at dusk. One thing we notice is they seldom park their baby in the same spot so hopefully your Bodie will not stumble upon it or if so it will be while mama is away. We have stumbled upon a fawn and they either crouch down to hide or sprint away, mama always finds them in the evening...so fascinating.
Yes to , slow down"!
This baby was so close to our house I was able to snap this picture from our front window. Great spot for hiding and eating....deer love hostas!

Last evening, one of our gardeners spotted a tiny fawn in our meadow. Adorable (apparently baby fawns weigh between 4 and 8 pounds) but now we must worry that the mother will attack Bodie if he stumbles upon the fawn in one of his "Snoopy in the pumpkin patch" excursions into the deep grasses.

We also must worry that the doe will get killed crossing our road, which has a steep hill that people gun their trucks to climb, blithely ignoring the 25 mph posted speed limit.

People: You kill the doe, you've killed the fawns. SLOW DOWN!
