I'm a natural rules-follower, so setting limits works for me.  I know it's not for everyone! kellygirl, I love the silk blouse/jeans formula.  It wasn't very practical in Colorado, except for a few weeks each year. Runcarla, we're getting to the part of the year where I'm more comfortable knowing what's coming, as Kevin started his job here last October.   Do you think you're just the kind of shopper who tends to buy in fits and spurts? It’s probably been a good idea to delay a shopping splurge until you’ve figured out your new environment and how it will affect your style personality. My 2019 challenge has been to keep to a budget, and (learned from you) document items edited from my closet and THE REASONS WHY. I almost blew my budget in October, adding 12 items to my closet. In retrospect, I REALLY needed to boost my closet numbers and increase the colour quotient of my wardrobe. Most of the items I edited prior to October had worn out, and most of what I jettisoned during my annual review were on their way to physical failure. My favourite Bretton t’s and cotton sweaters last 2 years on average - one of the dilemmas of a smaller wardrobe where the rotation (and wear rate) of items is higher. Here are my numbers so far: 36 items (clothing, footwear, accessories like scarves and bags) 8 items (sports kit refresh) 8 items (lingerie update) I have used up 88% of my annual budget, or almost 11/12 months if worked out as a monthly allowance. I think one downside of lots of wears is the stuff wearing out. It kind of dismays me which is silly when wearing the items a lot is my goal! It’s kind of like I expect then to be like the Everready battery and just keep going and going and going! The new silk blouse is really pretty and I like the colour of the AllBirds. I counted last night- also at 20 for the year so far and have retired 32 so far. But still a much larger wardrobe than yours around the 160-170 mark. Happy with my progress though. Yay for us. I think the same way about cardigans - have to go with everything- I do find black and silvery grey the most versatile. You are doing brilliantly. I am up to 33 so have gone over my limit. A mix of some thrifting wildcards, four pairs of sneakers probably did it! That includes gear and accessories but it all counts in my book. Instead of the statement shopping binge I'd planned, my purchases were mostly replacement items. My Good American jeans from last year's NAS gave up the ghost mid-month with a thigh tear after 57 wears. I also let my AllBirds from last year go after 138 wears. Things I bought: AllBirds wool runners in cocoa - Love this color and I think it's just a little different for pairing with all my burgundy and rust. Universal Standard jeans - I haven't done a lot of shopping at Universal Standard, because their modern, geometric shapes and cool color story are often at odds with the soft lines and warm colors of my aesthetic. However, these jeans are SO COMFORTABLE and fit perfectly. Easily the best I've had in years. I bought the longer length and my only question is whether to let them scrunch or give them a chop, as I did enjoy the unfinished hems on my Good Americans. Sundance silk peasant blouse - Yup, I kept it. It hasn't really scratched my itch for a new signature piece, but does give me another blouse option. At this point, I'd almost go so far as to say that floral silk blouses have become a wardrobe essential for me. If not that, they're at least a staple statement. Is that a thing? and one more piece... Garnet Hill cashmere duster cardigan (returned) - I also ordered a duster cardigan in "heathered black" to try. "Heathered black", it turned out, meant "charcoal gray." It looked terrible on me and matched nothing in my closet. I need a piece like that to match pretty much EVERYTHING in my closet, so back it went. I'll be back to add a pic of me in all three items, but I confess, I didn't wear the shoes for longer than the length of the photo, as I don't love them with the jeans. Plenty of other things to wear them with! Here's the boilerplate: In our yearlong shopping challenge, I committed to buying 31 or fewer items (not counting undergarments). January - 0 items February - 5 items March - 2 items April - 2 items May - 4 items June - 1 item July - 2 items August - 0 items September - 1 item October - 3 items This brings my total purchases for the year to 20 purchases, still plenty of room to to an end-of-year refresh! I've retired 26 items this year, so my wardrobe is shrinking. All in all, I have 113 items total in my closet, if I count all categories except jewelry, underwear and sleepwear (though I am counting sleep/lounge in my 31 purchases and my retirements.)
