Marlene, if you're looking for European style, you might try these:
http://lookdepernille.theyouway.com/
http://www.polienne.com/
http://www.portablepackage.com/
Sarah Strand is interesting too, and Garance Dore is huge but I don't really follow her.

I forgot to add a few qualifiers to the footwear, namely, that is consists mainly of lace up shoes (other than the running shoes, of course) and/or very short ankle boots. I saw one woman on the train with knee-high boots and noticed that it was the first pair of tall boots I'd seen since I've been here.
I definitely agree that the clothing very much suits the bicycle and pedestrian culture, as well as the sharp windy and rainy weather.

If you want colourful clothing, or looser trousers, they are being sold in smaller stores. I also saw a beautiful array of dresses, imported from neighbouring countries, in a shop yesterday. Yet I have yet to see these items being worn. It could be that the colour and looser cuts are reserved for summer exclusively.

So many of my friends have moved to Berlin this year (priced out of San Francisco). I fit right into the fashion there with all my black clothes... makes me wish I could move there for a while too.

It has been a while since I have been to Europe.

I think the walking, biking and public transport make a huge difference to clothing choice.

Mind you there are big variations in the US - I have only been to a handful of cities but the difference between Portland(Oregon), San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Tulsa( Oklahoma )and rural Arizona (Sedona, Wichenburg) was huge.

And in Australia Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth have different vibes - and rural Australia is different again.

Here in NZ Christchurch has a more outdoorsy traditional vibe, Wellington has lots of smart suits and eclectic students, Auckland is a bit more body con, colourful and label oriented. Where I live in the Waikato is a bit of a mix of all the above. Huge generalisations here of course!

I go to northern Germany and Italy twice a year and see the same thing:
Most people seem to be dressed for practicality reasons more than fashion reasons.
In northern Germany pretty much everybody rides bikes instead of using their cars (My mother is 77 and her bike is her main form of daily transportation, even in winter) So pants that are not too flared and flat shoes are very common. People also walk a lot more than here and that definitely influences footwear. Especially on cobblestones or brick paved walkways.
Taking public transport makes darker clothing more sensible than wearing light colors that show dirt easily.
Last time I was in Florence, I was one of very few women wearing heels.
I'll be in Germany and Florence in three weeks again and will take note what is worn in Florence.

A friend of mine is Danish and moved stateside a few years ago. When she goes home to Denmark to visit family, she says she doesn't own enough black now (all of that colorful American living ha!) and stands out in a sea of black and simple chic items. Everything is black, urban, chic, nothing too colorful, exotic or frilly, especially for coats, pants, etc. She said her dark plum-grey coat she wears would be considered too much color and isn't stylish enough to wear over there. :o

I find it all fascinating since I thrive on color, frills, satin, silk, wide leg pants, and am eclectic with my dressing.

Sounds like I should keep my European travels to Italy hehe :D

Down here in Melbourne, Australia...which is a large city...there is quite a lot of this style too but it is far from ubiquitous and most adults prefer sharper footwear than white sneakers. It is city that favours black over white though. There is a great mix of up market and high street fashion, classy dressing, edginess, casual, avant garde, individualty and those who couldn't care less....you see a bit of everything.

I think (in Berlin, at least) there is a grittiness to the street style, along with a very practical style. I think it is easy to fit in, sartorially, as long as you don't wear bright white sneakers & a ball cap.

Yes, I think that's a pretty good description. I'm definitely out of the norm wearing skirts that often, but in the norm with wearing flats. Agree on the muted colors too... The BF trend was practically non existent here and I guess it will be the same for flares.

Dark clothing, skinny jeans, and Nikes or running shoes seem to be the go-to silhouette of choice for both men and women. I've popped into a number of stores, including Galleries LaFayettes, and haven't seen anyone sporting the wide-legged trouser look. Some shops have boyfriend jeans, but even those are more narrow in cut that what has been featured on YLF. Very few women are wearing skirts or heels, nothing bright, and make-up and accessories are minimal. Handbags are more like messenger bags, often in sturdy leather with a buckle (think homemade and less ornate Cambridge satchel). As a practical gal, I'm quite liking this fashion sensibility!
