Amy, I missed this thread the first time and didn't realize I'd sort of inspired it!

I've been following the other thread, but didn't weigh in because I'm in the mushy, non-confrontational "not crazy about logos for myself except for small ones on bags, but couldn't care less if other people wear more noticeable ones" middle, and didn't feel like I'd be adding much insight to the conversation.

Now that I think about it, my original comment about Hunter rain boots was probably driven partly by logo aversion, but mostly by my own personal laziness (which I sometimes assume is way more universal than it is). Basically, I really, really hate bringing other shoes to change into when I need to wear rain or snow boots somewhere, so I try to get ones that look as much like regular boots as possible, which means no obvious gear logos.

Back to your followup, I definitely understand how it can be weird when something you're wearing has connotations that aren't the ones you intend, or that you didn't even realize when you bought it.

And I like your new boots and their kitty accessory!

Boot socks. Fold the tops down over and don't get Hunter boot socks because they have the logo too. Actually the boot socks will make them a lot comfier and warmer in the rain - which they are not.

More logo-reaction thoughts:
The leather ankle boots I'm likely keeping (still haven't gotten around to posting decent photos, styled) are a brand I guess a lot of people would find desirable for status or something. I love them for their quality, style and maintain-ability. The leather feels fantastic! Part of the style is no recognizable branding. I wouldn't get a handbag, however well made, from the same brand bc I don't care for the logo itself nor its rampant fakes. Other bags with recognizable logos, I'd have no problem with bc I like the esthetic.

If I ever wear these boots to the volunteer thingy, it'll be with baggy worn jeans from a free box (such combinations give me a playful, lighthearted feeling about getting dressed), and I highly doubt even the keenest brand-fans will recognize them. If that's symptomatic of me being a reverse snob, well *that's* nothing new.

See, Nicole, that doesn't bother me, because then the focus is the design of the item itself. I'm speaking as a former graphic designer here, so I'm sensitive to the form/function balance of design. I feel like some designers just sometimes splash a logo on an item, and it actually detracts from what might be an elegant product design -- or conversely, clutters or obscures a poor one.

But what about the "stealth" logo or iconic shape that Echo referred to. I actually think that has more cachet because only those "in the know" will know that it's a Rebecca MInkoff bag, not because of logo but because of design. Or is that even more annoying?

I can't help you with the Hunters except to suggest generic boot liners the will fold over and hide the logo.
I actually don't mind certain logos -- I'm not sure why. I kind of like the graphic nature of the Hunter logo, and the very straightforward classic font. Those boots have been around forever, so I'm fine with that. But what I am not into is bags whose fabric is printed with the logo, so you can't get away from the brand. Even the beloved LV is too much for me.
At the airport the other day, a tall thin VERY stylish young man in front of me carried a HUGE Louis Vuitton garment bag, and if that wasn't enough, he was also wearing a TINY Louis Vuitton backpack as well! I started to feel claustrophobic, as if all the little LVs would start flying off his luggage like little bats and swirl all around us. It was just too much. I think the tiny backpack put me over the edge.

I agree with NicoleD -- attempting to obscure it might just draw more attention to it. I'd try the boot liners.

I dislike large logos and sometimes carry my bags with the logo facing in towards me, even though the logo is small. But if it's big enough or poorly integrated into the design of the item, it turns me off an item and I just don't buy it. The Hunter one only bothers me because it's bright white on a black boot, not because it says Hunter.

Well, I am SO not the boot expert, but it seems to me that buckles and straps are big detail items on boots. It seems to me that a cobbler or leather shop could stitch on something like this over the logo. http://www.pacifictrimming.com.....re-20.html

I tend to agree that the only real solution is not to buy merchandise with logos you dislike. Hunters are relatively subdued, but unless you take the boot liner or sharpie route, there is no getting rid of it (as surely you must have known when you purchased them).

And I think a lot of people are logo-averse. I generally don't buy designer items with monogram prints, and I always remove obnoxious hangtags. That said, however, even "stealth" brands are still easily identifiable by those who know because most brands have a certain style or aesthetic associated with them that is unmistakable. Regardless, I tend to purchase items I love, so I am fine with their look (logo or not) when I buy them or I don't buy them at all.

Tough one. Obscuring it on purpose might just draw ore attention to it. I think you will have to fold something over the rim, like a sock/liner, or another piece of fabric. That is one thing I don't like about Coach and Michael Kors bags.

As logos go, the Hunter one is quite small and tasteful. But I know what you mean. It's a logo, people can read it, and they can make judgments about you based on the fact that you're wearing Hunter boots. It's not that designers are necessarily "full of themselves" -- it's more that it's free advertising, which they are entitled to. You can't deny that it's a clever marketing strategy. If people buy the products, not only are they allowing themselves to be branded (and we ALL brand ourselves, whether we display it on clothing or not), they are agreeing to partake in providing free advertising.

The easiest solution, if you don't want to do this, is not to buy the products. Too late now, though! :-) The Hunter logo is clearly not meant to be removed. I would argue that even if you were to Sharpie it out (or put black tape -- that's a good idea), people are still going to read them as Hunters -- but, crucially, they are ALSO going to read you as a person who is averse to becoming a marketing tool. So you could do that. Maybe that's what you want your boots to say about you. Or, like Lyn says, you could cover the logo with rolled-over boot liners or socks, which will be a way of simply making them look not like Hunters. That might be a solution that doesn't have a political statement wrapped up in it.

This might sound really crazy, but what about black duct tape, cut to the exact size of the logo? That way it wouldn't be permanent, and you could remove it if you like. Although it might leave glue residue behind.

I too hate obvious branding. It seems like some designers are so full of themselves!

I've taken a seam ripper to logo patches on clothing . . . and I do tuck my Fossil skeleton key into the bag. But that looks pretty permament. I like Lyn*s idea.

What about those boot toppers that Angie posted about earlier for narrow calves? They're kind of like socks? And could cover the logo.

I don't have suggestions for removing the logo, but wanted to say how great your picture is. The beautiful black boots and the adorable black kitty with the red backdrop is stunning. It could be an ad for the brand.

Wonder if a cobbler could sew something more discreet over top... say, something in an all-black motif. I am with you on not loving visible branding. P.S. -- Your kitty is darling!

Well, I did use a waterproof sharpie on a logo on some sneakers last year.
It's tough because various solutions might not hold up well. Some kind of paint or marker is flat.
Super glue to put something over it comes to mind, but might collect grime or fall off.
I hate handbag logos, and for one bag I considered going to one of those stores that sells jewelry-making supplies, and try to find a small metal plate in the right size and metal--there are ovals, and rectangles, and such--and glue it over. Or leather, but again it might frizz up.
