Thank you Brooklyn, glad to hear that at least this won't be a big worry. My family from Europe is visiting us in the US right now and they just took off for a short road trip this morning. I told them to always find out how the hotel phone worked!

Thanks everyone.

Shevia, the ambulance officers said that there was a virus going around. I wonder if both our husbands got it?

And Chiara, you too? It’s so disappointing on a holiday, but at least we could just bunker down at the hotel.

Joy, thanks. They did check that out on the night. They didn’t think it was a blood sugar issue. But I will insist that he have a check up. I am so glad that he didn’t hit his head in the shower.

Chouette22, we do have travel insurance. We haven’t claimed yet but we expect to get most of the expenses back (minus an excess). Given the high cost of medical care in the US, we always take out travel insurance, even though we theoretically get free insurance through our credit card (I am never game enough to rely on that). I don’t think our Australian health insurance would cover it, but maybe it’s different in other countries. I hope we don’t have any problems because it was expensive. But not as bad as it could have been eg if he had needed emergency surgery.

Rachy, yes, all was not lost. I had to shop to save the holiday

That is frightening about your husband Brooklyn. Good advice about the hotel phone. I just ignore them. It is always stressful to get sick when you or someone you are with are traveling.

Love the first outfit. You look so elegant in the burgundy. Smart to buy something you like when you see it. Zara stock is different everywhere. I also have admired those EF sandals.

Your purchases are so perfect for you, as always.

I am so immensely sorry for that virus to hit your husband at all, and then on an international trip. I travel with college students every summer and of course, this is always my biggest worry.
If I may ask: How did it work out with insurance? Did you have travel-insurance and if yes, is it covering (all) the cost? Or does your regular Australian healthcare pick up some of it? US healthcare costs are through the roof!
Some of my students purchase travel-insurance and some just rely on their home-insurance to kick in should something happen.

Advice regarding how the hotel phone works is well taken, thank you!

What is it with husbands becoming desperately unwell when travelling? A reminder that travel is both fun and stressful. Last big trip that we took, my poor DH came down with a terrible flu. He was unwell in bed for days, and says that certain parts of the trip, he has no memory of at all!

Wow. Petrifying. So pleased he is OK. Thank goodness for travel insurance.
And for hotels.
I think I totally get returning the riding jacket. Sometimes you don't want reminding of certain days and times if you don't have to.
I am glad you think you have some great Australian brands that are not emulated there. I feel the same about some NZ brands. I remember it feeling a bit strange in San Francisco in 2013 when I had admiring comments about my clothing eg "Where do you get these clothes?" I replied "Um, which bit?" and the smartly dressed woman is like "All of it!"
You look gorgeous in the new stuff. I really like the jeans outfits.

Brooklyn, what a frightening time you had. I am so glad that your DH is recovering . If there is still any mystery about his collapse, ha e him get a blood test. A friend's DH collapsed in the shower and got badly cut on the glass from the shower walls. He had type 2 diabetes and did not know it. A blood sugar problem caused the collapse.
Your new items look gorgeous on you. The idea of a Byzantine theme for winter is a great idea

Thanks everyone for the support and sympathy, and the compliments!

A lesson that I learnt from this, which I will pass on, is that you should always have a phone or familiarise yourself with the hotel phone. I had taken the SIM card out of my phone to avoid international charges and hadn’t familiarised myself with how to call reception or make outward calls on the hotel phone. I was so angry with my self when I had my unconscious husband in my arms and I couldn’t immediately figure out how to call reception (or 911). Some phones you dial 0 first. Some phones you hit talk first. Some phones you just pickup the phone and dial the number. Next time I will do that or buy a travel SIM. Just as important as knowing where your fire exits are (which I always do).

Suntiger, I get it! I think for work I would wear a full slip. But it’s perfectly decent as is for going out.

Janet, I was intrigued by the Byzantine jewellery and patterns and also the colours (predominantly dark red, dark green and gold). Very rich looking.

Suz, the AT top would be great on you.

The AT top also comes in black. Kind of wish I had got that too now (shhh, don’t tell Angie). When I got it it was 40% off, so a very good price.

I can't even imagine how stressful it would be to get that ill on an international trip...and how disheartening on a vacation that must have represented a significant investment of both time and money! I'm glad you still got to do some touristy things, and that you were able to just spend time in the city, if only to shop.

You are a master shopper! You're so good at choosing items that suit your body and your style. I'm really in awe at your sense of your own aesthetic. That first outfit, especially is to die for, but I also like the new tops, dress, and sandals. And hopefully, those items will carry happy memories of your trip instead of scary ones.

Brooklyn, what an awful experience for you! I'm so very sorry. I can sympathize, too, because on one of our rare trips to NYC, my husband also fell ill with a strange virus and was confined to bed for days. I know just what you mean about the short shopping trips (and the self-pity purchases). In our case it was the dead of winter and there was a snowstorm so that complicated the picture. I was slipping and sliding on the ice and snow trying to bring him chicken soup at one point...

I am SO glad Mr. B. is now doing better and you had at least a few days to enjoy the city together.

And what amazing purchases you made! Every one of these items looks extraordinary on you -- just lovely. I especially love the burgundy outfit (and thanks for the heads up on the top -- looks useful). Also love the Zara tops and of course the sandals (which I own in silver).

I had to smile at your comment about the high v-neck being "flattering for us flat chested gals." Yep. There have been so many times a top would have been perfect if only the neckline hadn't been quite so wide . . . maybe that's one reason I find it so hard to accumulate enough tops for a true capsule?

Oh, that situation with your husband sounds so scary! I’m glad it was nothing more serious, but still that’s a tough thing to handle especially when you’re so far from home. I hope he’s feeling much better now.

All of your purchases look amazing, and how fun to see you in the familiar sites of NYC, one of my favorite cities. Intriguing to think of how you might incorporate a Byzantine theme!

Here we were thinking you were off the forum having a wonderful time in New York! So sad to hear that DH got sick, I can only imagine how frightening that would have been. So glad that it was not something more serious.

Clever you for buying the amazing Zara items when you saw them. I once bought the most fab pea coat in Zara Singapore, it never came to Australia. Your skirt and tops are definitely items that you would not want to miss out on.

The Chanel jewellery looks perfect for you, so glad that you got to see this exhibition and got inspiration from it.

I bet Mrs B was thrilled to have you home. That is always the best part of coming home from a holiday, the doggie catch up.

my goodness - what an eventful trip!

I can only imagine how stressful this was.

So pleased to hear Mr Brooklyn is feeling better.
You look terrific in your new purchases, too.

Great choices.
I want one of those Zara tops! I also look for those fabric blends.

What a dreadful experience! What a relief that hubs required only a few days of taking it easy.

Love the Zara tops. So easy for summer

Thanks, Brooklyn. Good to know.
Angel on right: youd be splitting your wears with the silk sarong you just overdyed with burgundy. Which you didn't wear yet as is, because its too sheer for work and requires a slip.
Devil on left: you're a Theatrical Romantic dark autumn, whose emoji is the brown flamenco dancer. Be the flamenco dancer!
Rational me: ill decide later...
1 week later DH: you got some boxes...(probably)

Omg Brooklyn!! What an adventure. I can’t imagine a scarier situation than collapsing in the shower, 911. I’m so happy that DH only had a bad virus, but I cannot imagine the terror. Hugs to you both and glad you are home and well!!

I’m so glad you could enjoy at least a little of your vacation. Your new outfits are all gorgeous!! I can imagine the negative associations with the riding jacket. No need to tote any but happy memories. My gut says it’s going to be a great year for jackets - another even better will be along soon. SOW, im so sorry PC did not have the blazer. That’s why I hate BM stores. You trek, lose time and they don’t even have the merchandise. sometimes you just can’t win. But do many gorgeous goodies!! You wear them so well!! And aren’t EF shoes the best!! Happy feet!!

Sending hugs to you and fervent wishes for a speedy revovery for DH and only healthy, happy, peaceful things I the future!!

Suntiger, thanks. The skirt is not opaque. It is semi sheer. It has a half slip underneath. I may end up wearing a full slip underneath it, I haven’t quite decided yet. It probably would depend on where I was wearing it.
