Yeah, I know that wet Toronto cold! I’m ordering moderate weather but we will see what the forecast suggests.

We did Paris at this time of year too and even along the Seine at night I was fine with sneakers (with socks) and a moderate puffer.

Having layering options will be key. Everything else is gravy!

I'd worry about the light yellow on NYC streets, especially if it does rain.

Also, it's true that as a Winnipegger you are hardy, but you know...the coast is damp. It's a different kind of cold. Laugh if you want (and I know you will, LOL) but I will never forget the day I walked into a Vancouver store and the SA looked at me and said, in all seriousness,

"I can't handle any more of this COLD!!"

I looked back at him quizzically. It was kind of yukky but relatively mild, to my just-moved-from-Ontario mind, but it was damp, and I had to admit, it felt chillier than it would have felt at that same temperature back in Kingston (which is damp in its own way, being on a major lake and river).

He stared back at me. "I'm from WINNIPEG," he said. "And I was never truly cold until I moved to Vancouver! My family think I'm nuts!"

That aside....sneakers without socks will probably be on some people's feet in NYC at that time of year. I guess? And as I said yesterday, it is a few weeks ahead of Toronto in terms of weather. But I can't imagine going without socks until end of April up there, FWIW. Even here in BC, I don't take off my socks/ boots until mid-April or so....

lol. My packing wardrobe holes are becoming apparent, Suz. I’ve always relied on black and the odd accessory to pass for dressed up in these kinds of trips. And I have so often packed extra stuff I never even touch.

Maybe I will find a dressy piece or two in some great NYC thrift shop or boutique, though. I’d love to have a statement “something”.

I haven’t tried the puffer under the anorak yet but will test that in some try on sessions. Debating whether the weird yellow Ecco sneakers I just found might work as my third shoe. They do inject some playfulness!

I appreciate all the ideas and perspectives!!!

I think you can do a lot with tops and accessories (like scarves) as far as colour and (apparent) dressiness. Like if you wore your black boots and pants with a dressier top, no one would be the wiser when you are sitting in a restaurant or theatre. :)

Can the puffer layer under the olive anorak?

Also, I'm an outlier traveller, I think. I'm super practical at home -- dressing always for my suburban environment -- but put me in a big city and I want to pretend to be a glamour girl. Not exactly that, but I see it as an opportunity to wear the dressier items I own and love and don't get much opportunity to wear in my regular life. Horses for courses, as Angie says! And if you don't need dressy clothes and don't already have dressy clothes, then you certainly have no need to go out and buy them!

Thanks for these excellent thoughts, Suz! The only other time I was in NY was at this same time of year. What feels cold for some fabbers feels pretty fab for me as a rule, so there's an advantage to coming from Winnipeg!

Footwear -- Yes! to try ons at the very least. For travel, Blundstones will be my rainy weather footwear option, My options for walking shoe is either a white Saucony or black and white New Balance. Probably the white Saucony. I don't have high tops or another pair of boots. Closest option is probably my bronze Ecco Soft 7s -- Or maybe the weird yellow Eccos if I decide to keep them. (I know, not exactly dressy)

Layers -- yup, will have that covered!

Colours -- speaking of wardrobe holes and vacation capsules... If it was summer I'd have this one nailed, but it's harder in this in-between season (something I will be trying to shop for). And I do tend to revert to VERY pragmatic tendencies when I travel -- Pieces have to be able to pass for dressy or casual with very little work. Your lavender coat is so fab, and you remind me how much I wish I had an awesome orange packable puffer - especially since it is outerwear that will be most on view. My options are all pretty dark, or frankly, black -- not exactly colour's best friend. Will have to give this more thought.

Fold up bag for purchases -- YES. Great thought, and I have good bag I can throw in.

Toppers -- Final choices will depend a bit on the forecast for the week. If it's warm enough, I do have a rather fun olive green thrifted anorak thing -- not exactly dressy, but a good colour at least. Would need plenty of layering to work, so not as one and done as the black puffer. Also, if warm enough, I could consider taking my camel topper thingy -- neither coat nor blazer but could kind of pass for both... Fingers crossed for a warmish forecast.

Umbrella is a smart idea!

Level of formality -- tough one. I have work wear, but I don't really have DRESSY pieces to pull out. My shoes and outerwear are capital C casual -- dressy footwear options are very limited and among those there isn't really one I would trust for a lot of walking. My outerwear options are mostly casual, too -- and any that might read as dressier are black (harkening back to the colour points!)

I will probably start taking pictures of outfit possibilities in the next few days to see what I can do. I might have to rely more on silhouette and attitude -- ie trying to channel a bit of street style vibe -- rather than formality.

Fun problems to mull over!

SO exciting! I envy you this trip and hope you make the most of it!

End of March is definitely in-between weather in NYC. Not quite winter, not quite spring. There might be crocuses and daffodils coming up. There will not be leaves on the trees. I have been there in many months. The climate is similar to Toronto's but they are a few weeks ahead.

I just. put together a travel capsule for a PNW destination for a week. I want to say it worked perfectly...but the truth is, I went shopping and wore a lot of new stuff! ;)

However, what I will say is this, most of which you know.

1. Footwear first (and please do LOOK at footwear while there! Even if it feels too risky to buy, because what if they don't work out once you are home? -- you can try different brands/ styles and see what might work for your feet, for the future).

2. Layers. You've got this.

3. Spring colours in cool weather fabrics make the world (and you) super happy. I got SO MANY COMPLIMENTS on my lavender coat. People literally stopped me in the street. Obviously, garnering compliments is not the purpose of your trip, but I have to say, any little burst of happiness is more than welcome, right? And this kind of thing -- you are giving joy as much as getting it.

4. Bring a fold up bag for your purchases! I brought an Eddie Bauer fold up duffle inside my bag and was I ever glad. When it came time to pack to go home, I had what I needed right there.

Re toppers:

For my week, I took 3, plus an umbrella that worked with all.

1 was outdoor topper, pure and simple. (Lavender coat).
1 was indoor/outdoor (red puffer jacket)
1 was indoor only in these temperatures -- denim jacket.

I wore the puffer under the coat sometimes, and over the denim jacket (with merino and other warm layers beneath). I used scarves. I had a hat and gloves with me.

This worked a charm. Mix and match.

On footwear:

Blundstones for sure.

ONE pair of sneakers (in case it it unseasonably warm).

One pair of something else. High top sneakers would work, or another type of boot. You need something that will work if it does rain. Sneakers are okay in warm rain but in cold rain -- bleah!

On level of formality:

Yes, people dress casually these days. But, um, excuse me, don't you want to dress up? When I go to NYC I pull out the stops and wear some of my fancy things that I don't get to wear in my decidedly non-urban life here. If we go out for dinner, I'm wearing something nice! If we go to a show, I get dressed up. Not like I'm going to the opera or not like I'm on the champagne carpet -- but I wear a really dressy top, and nicer pants (or dress or skirt in summer). I wear dressier footwear (which maybe you will buy?!). And it is fun to do that.

Thanks, Suntiger. I'll come prepared for variable temps. And because I live in a cold climate, what feels cold to some fabbers reads as warm to me, so there's that. I'd love to visit NY in fall some day, but no desire to experience summer heat in the city!

I haven't been to NYC in 30 years, and no intention of returning, but the East Coast in early spring is often rainy and very variable temperature. Our summers and autumns are much more consistent!
What you have looks good so far though!

My solution for unexpected cooler weather for the bottom half is to pack a pair of silk long johns to wear under lighter weight pants. They take up very little room. If the weather warms up as the day goes on I just take them off and stuff them in my purse.

Good point, Roberta. Thanks!

The charcoal cargo sweats are heavy enough to be too warm on a warm day but might not be quite warm enough if there was a very cold wind. I'm going to look through my jeans again to see if there is a pair I would take, but I'll also consider throwing in a pair of black fleece-lined leggings that I've found to be pretty cozy this winter. And I will monitor the forecast as I get closer to help find-tune my choices!

My only suggestion is based on my own trips to New York in January and early spring. That is, your upper half will be layered, but your bottom half probably won't be. So consider a pair of warmer pants. When I was wearing a sweater or a long sleeve tee under a jacket (with a scarf and gloves), the top half of me was toasty, but the bottom half would get chilly. You're outside a lot when you travel. When I knew I would be covering distance outside, I wore a pair of black bootcut fleece pants. Then I could shed my jacket at the museum or wherever, and still feel comfortable. But definitely bring at least one pair of parachute pants, they look super cool.

I agree that footwear is of extreme importance as you will be walking a lot. I would bring the Blundstones - sneakers just don't cut it if it rains. I would then go with clothes like your grey sweatpants, that are comfortable and make you feel cool .

Thanks, Rachy!! Yes, ease/comfort and versatility are key.

Absolutely, Carla -- that's just a list of things I"m considering. I would narrow it down once I have a better sense of the forecast for while we are there.

I think that's roughly shaping up as the palette, and I could probably do a similar look (thanks for the inspiration!), except my bomber is of the oversized, butt-covering kind.

I would love to add orange and I do have two orange sweaters but one is very chunky cotton and the other a fairly heavy turtleneck. I need mid weight tops, so maybe I will find something while I am there.

Thanks, Angie! I'll look at adding another pair of shoes and try to make sure I have three pairs of pants that each serve different purposes.

Because I live in a colder climate I don't run as cold as some of you do, but will make sure to have solid layering and butt-covering options!

I have a feeling it's not the best season for the things I need but I do hope I can find a treasure or two!

List looks good, but a lot of different toppers. Can you get by with 2 or 3 instead of 5? I’ve travelled with a leather bomber, trench, and jean jacket for a month. Layering the trench over the bomber worked great! The trench protected the leather from the rain, and the leather cut the wind and kept me warm. On later trips of equal length, I replaced the leather jacket with a puffer.

Maybe the bomber, weird raincoat trench, and blazer - which I see as your current signature?

From the description of the plaid trousers, your bomber, white sneakers, and white T - can you do an outfit like the one pictured below?

For colours I read a palette of black, brown, light grey, and white. Denim blue for ‘colour’. Have I got the colour palettes right? Do you have anything orange you might add?

A solid start, CarolS. Nice! Very exciting!

My 2 cents:

Please allow yourself to buy! This is a milestone birthday in NYC, and you love clothes - life is too short. No need to restrict yourself to carry-on either.

I'd bring three pairs of shoes. Your fussy feet - like mine! - need backup and a contingency plan.

Scarves are signature for your style - PACK A FEW! They don't take up room, and you will feel more pulled together and YOU wearing them.

What Jenn said about the pants. What kkards said about outerwear. It will not be warm yet. Would be nice if it was though. And lets hope no rain!

This is looks like a very good plan for NYC. I agree with the suggestion to add one more pair of shoes. And a very enthusiastic yes for black cargo pants, they look super versatile.

Thanks, Jenn. Good point about the joggers. Although the styles and fabrications are completely different I will keep this in mind as planning progresses. One is black and almost silky. One is heavy French cotton with exaggerated styling.

Cardiff girl - iou said it. Lots of walking, so footwear is king! Everything built around the feet. Will consider the odd small accessory too.

This is my personal opinion and YMMV;

For outerwear I like to have my bum covered. Both because it’s usually cold and windy but also because if your going to be on public transportation it’s nice to be covered in case you accidentally sit or brush up against something. If there’s rain in the forecast think about 3 pairs of shoes, it’s amazing how the rain puddles and how wet your feet can get.
Haven’t been to a Broadway show since 2019, but it’s pretty casual and if you’re eating near the theaters they are as well.

Have fun, it sounds like a great trip

I am no help as have never been to NYC but assuming it’s like most city breaks I.e lots of walking l think that your footwear is the most important then comfortable layering pieces. It looks like you have this sorted.l would probably ring the changes with accessories, scarves, hats etc that aren’t bulky.l am so jealous, what a fun thing to look forward to!

I’m putting together a travel capsule right now too, and this looks very similar to mine except that mine also includes dresses. My one hesitation here is that your top three pants includes two pairs of joggers. if you want more silhouette variety, then perhaps the parachute pants are a better option.

Preparing to spend a week in NYC at the end of March. Not yet sure what the weather will be like, so plans will have to remain a bit vague until I can see a bit more of a forecast.

In the meantime, I am assuming daytime temps might be in the low to mid double digits Celsius (maybe up to 59F?).

The total trip will be eight days -- two travel days and six in NYC. I hope to shop - and maybe even buy, so I am not sure if we will be able to get ourselves to the point of carry-on only -- although it would be lovely...

Our activities will be mostly on the casual side. We do have one Broadway show on the agenda. And a supper show that might warrant smart casual.

COLOUR PALETTE
The temptation for me with this kind of travel is to default to black for its utter ease -- hides any little spills, goes with itself in endless combinations, easy enough to make it pass for dressy...

BUT, I'd still like to have some colour. The question will be how to do that without adding a lot of extra "stuff".

SHOES
Hoping to limit to two:

one pair of very practical walking shoes -- probably white Saucony sneakers AND

Black Blundstone boots OR

White or bronze Ecco Soft 7 sneakers

BOTTOMS
I'm thinking three bottoms max. Top contenders:

Simple black poly joggers that could pass as both dressy or casual. Lighter weight for warmer days. No wrinkling, small footprint in the suitcase. (UPDATE: Removing these from the list -- a try on made me realize I wasn't happy with the shape and I still had the opportunity to return them -- so I did.)

Plaid wide leg ponte knit pull on pants. The plaid includes shades of grey, black and brown. The black in the plaid also passes for navy (maybe because the grey is quite blue). Anyway, comfortable, easy to wear, no wrinkling. They look like trousers so read on the dressy side but feel pretty much like high waisted pajamas (stealth gear?). More conducive to wearing with colour (orange, yellow, brown all look great with them) but still works with black.

The charcoal grey "cool girl" sweatpants because, well, they just make me feel cool. Very chill. Work with black tops or toppers...

The tan Zara parachute pants might also be an option -- although lower on the list as they are less forgiving of spills and perhaps less versatile for this type of capsule.

If I had a pair of blue jeans I really loved, they would probably make the list. Might try to shop for jeans while I am there but my weight is up a bit which might make that a frustrating exercise.

ADDED: I might also consider a pair of fleece-lined Mondetta tights. Nice and warm if needed. And they have pockets. :-)

TOPPERS/OUTERWEAR
Will depend somewhat on the weather forecast closer to departure, but here are some options I'm considering:

1 menswear blazer. Top contender is a cool brown that matches the remaining brown in my hair. It is light weight, so good as a possible daytime topper on its own or possibly layered under something else for evenings. Can help to "dress up" a more casual look, which may be helpful given that I won't really have a dressy footwear option.

Somewhat patina-ed black faux leather bomber. Thrifted a while ago.Bombers seem to be on trend right now, but still have to sort out if this will be the most practical and versatile option.

Weird black water repellent trench coat (recently thrifted). Could work over a blazer for evening.

Lightweight quilted black puffer -- knee length. Eminently practical for all kinds of weather. Have to see if the blazer will fit underneath.

Cropped black lightweight puffer. Always feels cool - and the length works well for me with wide leg pants.. Could layer under or over something else. Easy to carry and pack, though not as packable as some.

There might yet be other contenders as I see what the weather looks like and as I made decisions about bottoms and tops.

TOPS
Hope to keep it simple to allow for easy layering. Not sure how many yet. Contenders include:

Black merino turtleneck

Black boat neck sweater in light knit

Marled grey knit top (sweatshirt cut but very lightweight)

Bright yellow pullover sweater

Black ss t-shirt (if days are warm)

White ls tee

Maybe a denim shirt

I'd love to take a scarf but might try to just use my sweaters as scarves to cut down on how much I carry and allow for the possibility of finding something awesome while I am there.

Accessories will be minimal -- might take a very cheap string of faux pearls I thrifted last weekend. Easy to throw in and no risk if lost. I'll be looking for a pair of "cool" earrings while I'm there.

I've added what finds I have and will try to add photos to this or another post as things shape up.

Thanks for following along if you made it this far. And thanks to all who have posted their well curated travels capsules recently -- it has been most inspiring!

Thoughts on what sound to you like the most practical/versatile combos are more than welcome.
