Interesting!

I always bring my nude Sam Edelman ballet flats when I go to Toronto. They don't have a ton of cushioning but they stay on my feet and I can walk for hours with no blisters. I love my heels but, alas, they are not always practical. If I were a working woman in a large city I'd definitely invest in high end ballet flats.

both my sisters live in NYC, one in the Upper West Side and one in Queens. …i was just in the city mother's day weekend, and maybe because it was the weekend, but i saw mostly sneakers, (both the fashion kind and the true athletic kind), and booties. and generally when my sisters are planning to take the subway, they shy away from open toes shoes.

They must go through those ballet flats like crazy! I can understand wearing them, but those shoes just do not hold up .... how many days of city blocks can they possibly last, with their flimsy little soles?

And also, yes to Smittie and Suz: hooray for well-groomed, "tasty" gents. :)

I'm in NYC as a tourist and have been in the city so far for two weeks. I've seen lots of tourists and lots of sneakers. I'm walking 6+ miles a day and sneakers are a must for me. I've gone to 7 plays in the afternoon and seen beautifully dressed women wearing sport sneakers. I think that everything is acceptable in NYC and to stand out you have to dress really extreme. In the art museums, you will see really well dressed women with the exception of the Met where you see it all. I see the women streaming out of the buildings in the late afternoon, they must work in the offices, and they are wearing ballet flats. Dresses are very popular when it's hot. I've shopped at Madewell twice and it is a popular store. I think we must look like tourists, but we often get asked to give directions. We ride the subways in from Jersey City every day, so get to see people going to and from work there, too. Everyone has been so polite and thoughtful - I think NYC is one of the nicest citiies I've ever been in. I'm going to the ballet this afternoon and expect to see well dressed women there. I will be wear my asymmetrical EF top, jeans, and Nikes.

UmmLila, your discription of NYC street scene is identical to the Toronto downtown office tower scene. Things are a little different in the neighbourhoods like Queen St., little Italy, Kensington, etc where things are a little more eclectic.

I would have thought that there would be heaps of sneakers. I've never been to New York bUT I've been to Dallas, Seattle, Florida and San Francisco. American men in general seem to bed better groomed than Australasian men or maybe that's a reflection of where I hang out.

This amazes me as well. Cannot walk for blocks and blocks in flats. No way. And the rate of wear...the heel would be gone in a day.

What amazes me about the choice of ballet flats is that I find them so blasted uncomfortable on hard pavement (or anywhere!!) I absolutely understand why they wouldn't be wearing stilettos, but there are many options...

Very interesting observations UmmLila, thank you for sharing. I have noticed the same thing about the ballet flats here in downtown DC, in the areas where all the politicians are. The favorites seem to be Torry Burch Reevas.

YES. People in NYC don't wear heels on the street. It's too hard to walk those distances in heels. They pack them in their bags and change into heels at said destination.

I did see lots of people in sneakers the last time I was in NYC. Running type shoes.

I spent most of the early part of today shopping around in New York (mostly Fifth Avenue from Midtown down to the Flatiron district). The difference between the tourists and the locals is very easy to observe.

I did notice that almost all of the working women in the city seem to wear ballet flats. I found that interesting since they don't seem to be super trendy or prevalent elsewhere. Perhaps it's the best for city to keep your feet clean and also your toes covered in more conservative environments. Also, and likely because it was warm and their office sweater or jackets were stowed, saw a lot of people wearing the flats with sleeveless dresses.

I saw very few women in fashionable sneakers, unless they were also wearing gear. I also saw very few people in heels.

There were way more people on the sidewalks than actually shopping or even carrying shopping bags for that matter. The two most crowded stores I was in were Madewell and Zara (most crowded by a substantial amount, but I admittedly did not go into Topshop).

Also the working men are so well groomed (and tasty looking). I love the narrow suits and shirts, and nicely cut and styled hair.
