Number posts just fascinate me and so do capsule wardrobe posts. In theory I love the idea of capsules and everything happily mixing and matching but in reality I like stuff, lots of stuff and I will never have a minimal wardrobe but I admire and applaud those who do.

Lyn, a once a month repetition sounds pretty good to me, as that's only three times a season. Dresses are a little easier though because you don't have to do the mix and match thing, or only with toppers. I wonder if I have 30 completely unique outfits for each season - I probably don't quite but I'm close to it I bet.

It does get tricky with silhouettes and prints and such. I'm reminded of when I first started sewing again and participated in a wardrobe sewing challenge where people sewed 13 pieces that were all supposed to go together. I can't remember, i think it was 6 bottoms, 6 tops and a jacket? i made one, in black and white with a few black and white print tops, but not all of the pieces looked that good together even if they didn't clash per se. And then there's the whole length thing with tops depending on whether you're going to wear them with skirts or pants.

The other practical thing that gets me is laundry - if you only have four bottoms you've gotta do laundry pretty often, even if you're able to wear them more than once before washing. Worth tolerating when you're traveling or really limited in budget, but after a while it would drive me nuts. Of course, if you've got a couple other capsules - dressier for work or events or whatever, a weekend capsule, etc. - then you're swapping out days and you can extend that a bit.

Very thought provoking regarding my two week trip to ireland in October, but difficult for a maximalist with an enabling husband ...LOL...

So much expirmentation in my future and will be keeping this in mind!

Hmmm, I had 4 tops and some skirts/pants on a trip that all went together and I had bright berry, olive, cobalt along with the more expected denim, black, white. I think it had 'oomph'. (pics 1 and 4 in this post http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ip-packing). but I get the point that if you don't have your palette fine tuned it could be boring and just all neutrals.

Gigi makes a good point. Plus I wonder about the mix and match vs favorite combinations. For instance, I can wear my black and white stripe tee with white or black shorts but I really like it better with white. I can wear my black tee with gray or denim shorts but I prefer it with denim. Know what I mean? Would you be willing to wear each combination equally?

With those 8 pieces, I'd want to burn them at the end of the season! I think I'd rather have a few more of each item. Less repeating means I'd be more likely to wear at least some of them next year.

Interesting. However, as someone who likes variety, I will point out that if the four tops and four bottoms all go with each other, that means that the color scheme is going to be quite limited, imo. It may be practical, but it doesn't sound fun. :^)

This is terrific. You guys are really making me realize that I don't need anything new--at all. The only thing I could change up is the variety. I have different washes of bf jeans but I bet to the casual observer, they read all of the same which is also probably why I feel like I wear the same things over and over when I actually don't. Same goes for tops. I probably won't stop shopping but I will be more thoughtful about what I add. Just have to keep this post in mind! Thanks!

Yeah, for all the numbers I crunch, I also know minimalism isn't for me. But reasonable amounts without waste sure is!

I just culled down my wardrobe and I have 30 summer dresses; by your mathematics, with 79 days to dress for, that means that I only have to wear each dress twice or three times over the summer.

I don't think I need anymore than this, but I think going less than this will make me go crazy - I don't think I'll be a minimalist either.

Mo, you're right - most people probably don't notice the difference between the three (!) different washes I have for summer denim skirts; they all probably blend together in their minds.

I have a strange attraction to all these capsule schemes but when I actually try to stick to them 100% I rebel. I don't think I'll ever be a minimalist.

Yep, amazing when you really stop to figure it out, isn't it? I'd add that sometimes the things that I (we?) buy seeking more variety can often look just the same to the casual observer. So, getting yet another black skirt or denim short - oh, but this one is longer, or a different wash, and that one is fitted! - may look like basically the same outfit to others anyway. It makes me laugh sometimes but I still have a ton of fun with it, unnecessary excess and all.

This is a follow-on to my earlier post on the summer capsule and Mo's recent posts about repetition and variations of outfits. I was thinking about numbers and it works out like this: if you start with 4 bottoms and 4 tops, and they all work with each other, you have 16 basic outfits, not counting the variations you could make with different shoes or adding accessories etc. Assuming a 92-day season, that means you'd have to repeat each outfit between 5 and 6 times. Or you could exclude one day a week, assuming you'd need to dress up occasionally or you'd just stay in your loungewear one day on the weekend, which gives you ~79 days to account for, which means you'd only need to repeat each outfit around five times. If you added two more tops to the capsule, you'd have 24 outfits, which means you'd only have to repeat each outfit just over three times.
That's basically repeating each specific outfit once a month, which is not very often, although obviously the particular items are getting worn a lot more than that. In real life, unless you were traveling or otherwise only had these specific items in your closet, you'd probably mix it up a bit, for the reason of laundry if for no other. But it just goes to show how a very few items if mix and matchable give you a lot more options than you might think.
