I like them for wearing with lighter-colored things. They are like basic black, but for wearing with khaki, beige, cream, bright colors, etc...esp. outfits that have no black in them. I don't like black shoes if there is no other black in the outfit because I think they look heavy and odd and pull the outfit down. Of course lots of non-black shoes would work in those cases, but nude shoes are very versatile for outfits like this.

Nothing is a requirement for everyone, but nude pumps can be very versatile (if you wear pumps, that is). I didn't realize how necessary they were for me until I attended a funeral this summer. I wore flats, but they did NOT look right with the outfit (not that anyone was looking at me anyway). The only truly perfect shoe would have been one that disappeared, like the nude pump. I had a pair of very high nude heels, but that wasn't the look I was going for. As soon as that event was over, I went on a mission to find mid-height, nude-for-me pumps that I could wear with or for anything. I don't wear them a lot, but they definitely fill a hole I had not realized existed in my closet!

Basic, yes. Necessity, no.

I end up rarely ever wearing pumps. I seem to go straight from sandals to boots and back again, and in between I usually like my flats -- loafers, ballet, oxfords -- and my pumps go mainly unworn.

I cannot get excited about nude pumps for me. I have some metallic ones that suffice and have a bit more edge. Those suit my current style and needs better than nude pumps.

I do have a couple of pairs of nude wedge sandals that I like for summer dresses, skirts and shorts.

My own "nude" (i.e., basic neutral) in a shoe is a cooler-toned metallic.

Another in agreement with the thought that they're a basic, but not required. As a VERY dark haired brunette, I love love LOVE wearing my nude pumps! They are my go-to summer heel. Because I have super light skin, my "nudes" are dove gray, taupe, and cream (light camel would also work, but I haven't found the right pair yet); I have pumps, booties, and boots that I wear in these nude-for-me shades. Though of course wearing with light bottoms or bare legs is about as leg lengthening as it gets, I really enjoy wearing them with my darker and colored bottoms (black included); it can look really fresh!

I have a pair of patent nude wedges and flats. I'm hanging on to them, which may mean they are a basic, but I'm also feeling their moment in the spotlight has passed. It's not the fresh look it once was.

I agree with the general consensus that they're a basic, but not required.

I have a pair of nude pumps and I like that they go with basically everything. I did make sure to buy a pair that matched my skin tone as closely as possible. I chose to go with a basic pump with no adornments for maximum versatility.

Personally, I like the look of nude pumps better than nude flats or sandals, but that's just me. I think its nice to have the added structure or shape of a pump, as I feel that with a nude flat, for example, you're in danger of looking like you're not wearing shoes. xD

I did the worse thing--I bought a pair that don't fit in the heels but look nice and are comfortable otherwise, so I may only them with pants and not dresses, but I liked how they looked so much in general that now I really want some that fit better! So I plan to keep poking around and remember my PPP's.

What I liked was that in the right kind of nude --these were light taupey-nude-- was the lower contrast with my never-tanned legs. This color just looks easy to wear with some of the brighter colors I would like to do more of for spring and summer, and looked less severe and frumpy than black (I have fussy feet as well as wobble in anything hight at all, so can't wear what most people or magazine spreads consider real pumps, with narrow heels--that to me kind of makes black look better, more sleek and sexy--yah, for someone else!) or having to pick, black ? brown? match? The result is I'm put off buying dresses when I really would use them for non-work occasions. So at present I'm thinking that the "right" ones would be an easy go-to dress shoe for me.

Sounds like you are doing a good thing to be evaluating where they might fit in for you, but don't need to go buy some just to say you have them.

I don't own any, because I normally wear flats (and there is something about a nude flat that just isn't very exciting). Also I have some spider veins on my legs and a perfectly even nude shoe tends to really contrast with my not-so-perfect legs. Other things can work as a nude for me, certain leopard patterns (now that makes my legs look smooth in comparison, heh!) and metalic sandals which go with everything.

I think you just have to evaluate your life and your closet to see if they would end up being an essential for you.

I have yet to find a pair that I really like and that suit my lifestyle, but yes, they are on my list just in case I do find a pair. However, I have a pretty intense winter season where a nude pump would look really out of place (like -40 degrees Celsius in January does not welcome a nude pump, even in an office environment), so they would only be a 3 season wardrobe piece for me, at the most. They remain on my list, all the same, though!

First, I would have to say that nothing is a wardrobe requirement, beyond a decent set of underthings, perhaps! That said, even as a brunette, I like my patent pumps. They lengthen the leg line and draw attention to other elements of my outfit. I also find that I wear my metallic flats a lot, since their color blends with my skin-tone. A brushed or subtle metallic can serve well, too. Deborah is right that the right tone matters --- I find some too too gray and some too pinkish.

I've added a picture of me in my patent pumps, purchased last year from Target.

I have been looking for the perfect nude summer shoe for over 12 months. I see this as a bit of a wardrobe necessity (for me anyway) and I think nude can work for everyone but I think it's important to get the right nude tone for you. I imagine the right nude shoe would be quite a workhorse.

I have to admit that I have been on YLF for 4 years and don't own any. I do have nude sandals, which are great for summer.

I think they can work for brunettes and the reasoning they are considered flattering has been outlined by Laurenlarielala.
