Fashintern, he's planning to take a semester off, maybe two (he's waiting on some credit transfers that may mean he's done after this current semester). He'd really like to get a job and save some money so he can move out.

Joy, I hope you're able to get the new meter and that it helps! Medical devices should be at least as comfortable and functional as our clothing, and it's kind of sad that they're not.

My wardrobe has shrunk since leaving Colorado, but I did a lot of layering when I lived there, which made things more useful over multiple seasons. I check the weather here mostly for wind warnings and air quality. Very different from watching to decide what to wear!

Jenn, do you notice that every day is gorgeous. We stopped watching the weather on the news because it was so predicable and sometimes they skipped it completely.
I am so inspired by your wardrobe. How did you make this small wardrobe work in Colorado with 4 very different seasons? I really want to reduce my wardrobe by a third and hoped that would happen naturally by wearing things out, but that isn’t happening as much as I would like. Medical changes have dictated that all my pants with front zippers and many skirts with waists no longer can be worn, so my bottoms are few. Tops that are the least bit too short must go, but if I get a meter that can be worn on the under arm that may all change. That type of meter is accepted by our new insurance plan plus I have become skin-sensitive to something on the one I am using so that it leaves a bad rash under it. I still have red black and blue marks from the one I took off a month ago. Anyway, I would welcome a change if it would help. Sorry for the rant.

I hear you on the frustration for these young people having such strange (non)events thrown at them. What’s your son planning after CC? I’m trying to convince mine to take a gap year between the IB & college. Really meant for us to travel when we moved here. He has def gotten something out of living here, but we’ve only crossed borders twice.
Had to laugh at the grocery store people-watching. 60 was chilly for Tampa; some people brought out winter coats while others (maybe with more northern I get all thermostats) stayed in their shorts & tank tops.

shevia, it's so much warmer here than last winter! It still has only rained once, too. Such a weird year. We have more shutdowns starting tomorrow but, honestly, there's not a lot left to shut down and I'm not convinced the things that are left will make much of a difference. We went from "doing relatively well" to "shattering records" in the course of just a few weeks, with most things already shut down.

nemosmom, I've been thinking about what did and didn't work this year. I think I did pretty well, but not everything was a home run. As much as I like bundling up for winter, it is kind of nice to have a huge chunk of the year where I'm just free from temperature practicalities.

La Pedestrienne, winter in LA is a trip! I was sitting in the grocery store lot people-watching while waiting for my curbside order the other day and it made me laugh how little LA people care about the weather this time of year. I saw people in shorts and others in puffer coats. One woman had on short shorts with a tank top, sunglasses, and a giant cashmere scarf.

We share weather right now, although it will get somewhat colder next month. Your outfits are all fab and impressively varied given your small wardrobe. We are out of second lockdown and they are already discussing the third, although the talk of a vaccine is going to make it harder to stick imho. My son has started university from his bedroom. Not much to say but what a year.

Sal, the Mandalorian behind-the-scenes stuff is really great!

Liesbeth, hah! I'm dealing with lockdown well today. I wouldn't say I've been thriving, and I'm really sad for my son, who's missing a year that should have been pivotal in becoming an adult.

torontogirl, I'm not sure how disciplined I really am, but thank you! I tallied up my budget and I've spent just about the same amount this year as last year (though on a couple fewer items), so I guess 2020 with all its weirdness didn't change my shopping habits all that much. And yes! The Mandalorian behind-the-scenes was fab. So was the Making of Frozen 2!

Angie, would you believe I've worn that jumpsuit over 80 times? I'm hoping each round of vaccinations brings us closer to normalcy. I can't wait to travel again. All our 2019 travel was moving-related and I SO miss going somewhere just for the fun of it.

Runcarla, I was thinking your "closet spark" might be adding new colors! I feel like you transition colors in and out to create new and interesting combinations over time. And yes, I'm definitely Team Wear!

suntiger, we've gone back to doing curbside pickup for things like groceries and Target runs, too. I'd rather spend my risk budget on other things!

kellygirl, right now, neutrals work for me! I actually kind of regret the few colored things I've added over the past couple years. I'll wear them, but I don't feel as good in them.

Your discussion points are so useful, and your analysis insightful. I’m going to ponder more on what the ‘spark of life’ is in my closet - I’m thinking pattern! And in these strange times, my ‘unexpected inspiration’ is coming from vloggers with a penchant for vintage dressing! I need to muse on this some more - before the annual round-up with it’s requirement for a word and colour for the next year!

I’m glad you decided to keep the slip dress and have already put it into rotation. Do you find that you are team wear. Vs team store in the closet? I think that as part of keeping a small wardrobe, there is a case for getting items into rotation right away. Chances are most (but not all) new additions are carefully thought out and researched, and that emotional purchases are so rare, that they are the kind of things you might buy - and wear out of the store!

WOW!

That jumpsuit is KILLER fab on you, Jenn! Loving the floral top too! But you always look well turned out .... and I never expect anything but rocking fabness from you :)

Soooo glad you kept the slip dress! LIFE SPARKING FTW.

And of course, your thoughtful purchases are dead right for you. Well done!

The state of WA moved back to more restrictions two weeks ago. Not quite lockdown, but not far from it. Life was very restricted here anyway, so it's hardly made a difference, really. And especially not for us because we are stricter and more careful than most. I REALLY miss working with my clients in person. Shan't be doing that until the Summer of 2021 - by which time we hope to be vaccinated.

ONWARD!

Your discipline is amazing and inspiring, and you're looking better than ever. I love your print blouse, black pants and red shoe outfit especially ... perfect and pin-worthy for sure!!

Suz, I doubt I'll be hobnobbing with directors and producers anytime soon, but it's pretty neat to live in a city with such a large creative economy. I do think it plays out in the everyday street style...at least, back when more people were in the (proverbial) streets.

Lynne, it's a lot easier to keep a pair of shoes for indoors right now. They may go outside once the situation changes.

Minaminu, you know, a lot of the inspiration is just in the practicality of it! Working on a movie set or in a special effects workshop/lab means clothing you can move around in, which I appreciate!

rachylou and Fashintern, I was specifically thinking of Deborah Chow, one of the Mandalorian directors, who wears a lot of functional black, but switches up her silhouettes on the regular. Also Jennifer Lee, who heads up Disney Animation. She's a C-suite exec, who still manages to look creative and approachable. There are a lot of different animators, unit heads, artists, writers, and modelmakers featured in the various documentaries, though.

Fashintern, yes, I've been here a year, but more than half of that time has been spent on some level of lockdown. Right now, we're at "no gatherings, indoors for out, with anyone outside your household" level. Husband hasn't been to the office since March, and same with the kiddo, who will likely graduate from community college and transfer without ever setting foot on campus again.

Aquamarine, I liked this take from a local news source on the latest restrictions:

Stay home as much as you physically, emotionally and financially can.

Do not interact with people you don’t live with.

If you feel absolutely stir crazy, find an outdoor activity, not one indoors.

When you’re not at home, always – always – wear a mask.

Follow these rules for the next two months, or until you get vaccinated.

I can live with that, as long as the end really is in sight.

Bijou, I love your Silk Laundry slip dress, and have been admiring their collection for years. Alas, they don't go up to my size. I hope this will be as versatile!

Great looks. You know, you’ve inspired me to buy some Eileen Fisher clothing this year. I’m attracted to the simplicity and you wear it so well.

Although I am on the opposite coast, I’m with you on the lockdowns. We decided not to do much anyways regardless of the changing levels of restrictions here, so a few (or more) months of this is doable in the hopes of keeping the family healthy.

Echoing RL’s curiousity and the praise for the at-home outfit. If a group of those folks working behind the scenes did pop by for an afternoon soirée /Happy Hour, you’d be ready for them. I really like the dress and jeans outfits too—so effortlessly right.
You’ve been there just over a year, right?

Ok: now I’m curious as to what Disney women wear! You’re looking great - perfect for LA imo. Also: best at home outfit ever. Love it!

you look so stylish! That dress is so versatile and it looks great on you! I can understand why you are getting inspiration from what behind-the-scenes creatives are wearing, I like how creative people express their creativity in their clothes as well and create their own style!

Fabulous, Jenn. I love that you're inspired by real working women clothes rather than styled looks! These are all great looks, I love how intentional your purchases are. I've often had the intention of keeping a pair of shoes for indoors but never quite achieved it.

You are looking amazing! And how interesting that you are finding inspiration from the behind-the-scenes creative types. I hope that post COVID you get a chance to meet some of them and maybe make friends. Moving during a pandemic is (cough cough) SO WEIRD.

The slip dress is going to be so incredibly useful for you. And I love the new top in #1 -- pretty and special but also easy to wear. Reminds me of a Loft top I can't bear to part with for those exact reasons.

It is crazy to think that 2020 is almost over and the collection below is near complete for this year's additions. I added two new items this month, bringing the year-to-date total to fourteen. For November I added a slip dress (statement) and replaced a worn-out Breton tee (essential).

Other thoughts:

1. Spark of life. I've only worn the new slip dress a couple of times, but its many styling options have added a much-needed spark of fun and interest. I'm finding I get way more pleasure and joy out of a black piece in a new silhouette than I do out of adding something colorful.

2. Unexpected inspiration. We've been watching behind-the-scenes documentaries on Disney Plus recently, and I've been surprised to find myself noticing and being inspired by what the many female directors, producers, and behind-the-scenes creatives are wearing...much more than the more public-facing actors and celebrities. These are mostly women around my age, living in my city, and working in offscreen creative capacities. I see a lot of clothing that's urban and practical, but also stylish and individual.

3. Gorgeous weather. This is the best season for dressing in Los Angeles. 50s every morning, 70s every afternoon, and it will likely stay this way until the too-long summer arrives again.

4. Lockdown. The lockdown restrictions keep getting tighter and tighter, but most of the things they're now prohibiting (outdoor dining, multi-household gatherings, non-essential travel) are things we never did anyway. It feels like old hat now and, while I'd definitely rather see the numbers improving, I'm feeling heartened that an end is near.

Some WIWs from the past month. Nothing really spectacular. Just comfort and wearing the heck out of my things.

1. My Jamie and the Jones embroidered tee top with ponte pants. The top feels special but also practical and easy-to-wear.

2. New slip dress with a pullover sweater over.

3. New Warp and Weft jeans. Older Tolani silk tunic, tucked.

4. Pure home uniform. Eileen Fisher jumpsuit with my inside-only ballet flats.
