I've had a lot of returns lately too. I think I always want something specific - like a dark chocolate brown cardigan - in a natural blend, not itchy, not too heavy fabric. The right neckline. Nearly impossible. And that's how my shopping seems to go - I always have too specific of an item in mind.

Sorry to hear about the revolving returns; aren't some times are like that for all of us? I see lots of looks that interest me in magazines, on line, and in the blogosphere, but not I'm just not seeing the silhouettes I want on local sales floors in my size. A different kind of frustration.

I'm not even finding things I want to buy. Current fashion doesn't work with either my style or my body type. It's a good thing that I don't really have any true needs right now.

This is frustrating , but you are holding out for the right things and that is a good place to be. Its so hard doing it online and part of the process. I like the blazer that Angie posted for you. When it comes to patterns it really is a long hunt to find ones that are appealing , at least that has been my experience.

So frustrating! All I can add is hold out for things that you really love - I just decided to let go of two items purchased within the last year that I probably shouldn't have kept to begin with, but I really thought I needed "X" color or item and found them the best options after returning other candidates - but eventually, just the right thing will come along!

I feel your pain, I am returning a lot recently as well. I think sometimes when I try too hard to find just the right item(s) I drive myself crazy. Inspiration can come in many forms, but sometimes not as quickly as one would like. Hopefully this too will pass, and you'll be back to creating awesome/unique outfits in no time!

Nothing's inspiring me, it's still in the 80s. Looks like some 70s this week, that will be nice.

That said, I don't seem to need as much variety as most of the board does, especially in style. I need variety in color and accessories, but I'm still perfectly happy with slouchy hi-lo assym tunics. I feel like I just found them and should be allowed time (5 years or so) to enjoy them, but fashion has already moved on. I'm really PO'd at fashion lately and completely losing interest in keeping up. Hence my scarcity on the board. I'm just tired of trying. I guess this is the difference between someone with a true love of the whole subject of style and someone who just wants to look okay.

Sounds like you are tired from trying! I always think you look great, and I admire your enthusiasm and love for the art of style. I'm sure you will nail it soon, whatever "it" is currently eluding you!

I'm so sorry you're having these shopping frustrations. Going through a rash of returns can be so tedious and exhausting. Especially when you rely on web shopping as you do. You wait and then you are disappointed; a few rounds of that and ugh.

But beyond finding the things that fit well, I'm also really intrigued by your comment about looking at your wardrobe and finding all the same things.I think it's interesting to think about why that happens to us sometimes.

To a degree I agree with La Ped; there seems to be a lot out there but much of it boils down to great basics. For me, it's hard to find wearable items that feel really new. Even though I have had some success shopping this fall, I still feel like I am wearing the exact same thing I have for several years (look at my recent WIWs!). Probably my new French jeans are my best recent purchase that feels silhouette changing (have worn a few times) and my plaid long vest (have worn once).

So what is going on? Is it hard to break out of our individual norms? (Hard to move beyond the high-low fit sweaters?) Or are the really different items just not there?

Yesterday, I went to Cargo, an enormous store in Portland that was filled to the ceiling with the most amazing things. It's like what Anthropologie and Pier One would be in the most ideal universe possible: authentic interesting items from around the globe. There was color everywhere -- gorgeous cashmere scarves, long batik dresses, colorful quilted coats (and about a million other things). And what did I buy? A pair of simple, gold modern earrings. As my daughter said: "Mom, you bought the most YOU thing in this store."

So, I guess ultimately I wonder, what's the difference between having a style and being stuck?

I've had the opposite problem - I've found waayyy too much this season. What's inspiring me lately is color, and some favorite patterns taken up a notch with details. The color and fringe on the orange/red blazer, the elbow patch sleeves on the brown houndstooth, the color and crop on the pants, the maximal booties, statement jewelry, etc.

Are there any details on tops or bottoms that have piqued your interest for fall, Una? Or even a particular fabric or texture? If so, maybe you could keep an eye out for those. Sleeve detailing did it for me. There wasn't much in the new trends that appealed to me, but that did. The two items I found—a B&W top with vertical stripes and contrasting cuffs, and a sweater with tie details on the elongated split sleeves—have made me ridiculously happy and have had me dipping into my closet to make outfits. Then Aritizia, whose bottoms get me, recently unveiled their full line of winter woolies—great eye candy and fodder for Christmas—and a pair of olive trouser with raised seams caught my eye, and some wide legged cropped trousers jumped into my cart.
