I just returned from the New Jersey and the most important accessory I brought was a huge silk scarf that I kept wrapped around my neck. Comfortable and kept me warm even on the "polar vortex" days. (Which were in the teens where I was.)

Great insights on the importance of function.

When I pack for winter travels, I always think that the most important thing is to have a complement of mix-and-match hats, scarves, and stud earrings, because that plus my coat and boots basically wind up being my outfit! Hmmm, need to beef up my small stud earrings collection, as we're hoping to travel someplace cold this Christmas...

Really good notes on winter dressing.
I am afraid I’m going to stick with shorter skirts because of the coat situation.

I prefer the idea of OTK boots to a longer coat, so that will likely be my strategy going forward.

I totally agree with all of this, and it is all exactly what I do in Boston as well (except for earrings/makeup/hair product because I don't use those). I would add that the wide pants/skirts are also impractical because the sidewalks are gross here (covered with salt residue as well as snow and ice sometimes) in the winter and it all gets picked up by flowing long things. I imagine Beijing sidewalks are also quite grimy in winter!

I'm also a big proponent of the blanket scarf. It's seriously the warmest thing in my wardrobe and can make even the coldest day bearable.

In advertising pics, a shorter coat looks great over skirts or wide pants...but my rear end and thighs get sooooo cold when waiting for the bus etc. Beijing wintertime is not snowy or slushy, so that’s a bonus in terms of footwear, but there is a bitter wind keeping temps between 0 and -10c for several months. In my mind, I feel like a really dramatic long military-style or romantic embroidered coat would be interesting. Coats are such a pain to store during the off season, though, and a super long one might be even more of a pain!

For all-day feet warmth, I sometimes use “toe warmers” adhesive chemical packs. Also Columbia sportswear has a technology that they use in their winter boots— it somehow reflects body heat back into the shoe and it stays toasty. I have 2 pairs of their outdoor-style boots and they are great for winter hiking or just long days with lots of outdoor commuting.

Interesting! I have only one winter coat (a puffer), so I just wear whatever and don't think about what kinds of silhouettes work best with which type of coat. So would you recommend a shorter, tailored coat to go over the top of a swishy skirt or wide-leg pants?

I am so with you on the big long coat. This is a HEWI for me, personally. I need one that is lightweight so it will likely be a puffer. I think it is a must-have if you want to wear wider bottoms in winter and midis.

So much YES! Nodding along with all of your observations and seeing similar patterns in my own winter wardrobe.

Skinnies/leggings have been key for me to not feel so sloppy or weighed down. Short coats (or I suppose a giant coat) could work with swishy bottoms, but I can't convince myself to reach for them when it's super cold. I want clean lines on bottom for mobility, but lots of insulation up top (layered, weighty pullovers), and warm feet! I've also been craving the coziness of texture - fuzzy pullovers or toppers and plush scarves have been workhorses on dry cold days.

What kind of longer coat are you thinking?

I’m in a similar climate and agree with your observations. It’s posts like these that really help crystallize what works and what doesn’t and why!

Because coats are expensive I’m careful not to buy cardigans that are too long in winter. You remind me I need to up my hat/mitts/gloves complements ...

This also helps me remember that my wardrobe is held somewhat hostage by the elements (cold/heat) 7-8 months a year and that it’s best for me to adopt a uniform (or two) in these extreme temperature months.

It’s also a good reminder not to go hog wild with transitional seasonal purchases as they can only rack up so many wears when confined to 3-4 months a year.

A great big ole coat would work, but I wonder if you (specifically you, because you're good at this) could make sort of a trumpet dress shape with a very full skirted topped by a coat long enough to come over your butt that fit really close to your body.

How cold is it there? I'm surprised to hear Katherina says it's not as cold where she is--comments to reports on record low temps in the US generally include a few people saying "so? Scandinavia always gets that cold".

You are so right about that formula! Its the only one I'm happy with in deep winter too, but hard to find a long puffer with a hood that doesnt flop lower than my eyes!
They need to create winter office clothes that look dressy on the outside, but are lined with fleece in the inside

Yes, Katerina, so difficult with office clothes. I am starting to think the answer is a coat so enormous that it hides/fits over everything underneath.

Anchie , totally possible that different silhouettes may work in different seasons, right? I’ve stored my pleated midi till summer, to see if it feels more graceful with bare feet and bare shoulders.

Great post! Our climate is not as cold as where you are at the moment. More grey, humid, windy, around 0 Celsius. Yet, I often struggle with choosing outerwear to look good with my office clothes under - feels too voluminous. I wear a blazer and wide leg pants often....
I really dislike hats of all kind on me, so I usually don’t wear one and if it gets really cold, I use a hood of my jacket or coat. Scarves and gloves, however, are favourite items.

Great observations, I agree with everything. Especially one about swishy skirts and wide pants adding to a bulk. It was a light bulb moment for me, since these are the silhouettes that I am struggling with. Maybe I just chose the wrong season to try these trends?

Yes, Fashintern, I do it sometimes but it doesn’t feel good with the coat on top. Altogether too much fabric! And/or my coats aren’t long enough, so it feels awkward. The easiest/successful outfits are ones with fitted bottoms, I feel.

Winter has been around long enough to see what’s working in my everyday outfits. Some notes from my particular context (very cold, very dry, very urban):

Knee-high boots or mid-shaft ankle boots keep the ankles warm and allow for various pant lengths/widths.

Skinnies/leggings - showing leg silhouette is key under bulky outer layers. Long swishy skirts or wide pants just add to bulk.

Long sweaters for drama. Long cardigan and long turtleneck sweater-vest have been faves. A longer coat would be useful for better layering over these.

Coats, scarves, hats, gloves in various complements (working with footwear and purses in burgundy, silver/gray, brown, black).

Smaller earrings to avoid scarf entanglement. Less product in hair to avoid making hat sticky. Less makeup as it gets onto scarf and hat.

Interesting how things fall into clear patterns by the end of the season.
