LOP - I am sorry to hear that so much has happened on top of the pressure of defending.

Refugee - I am glad that you are finding some solace, even if temporary. Someone once told me that you never really "get over" it, you just learn to deal with it over time. I hope that someday you find peace.

AG - I am sorry to know that you must be added to list. My thoughts are with you.

biscuitsmom- I am on Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin). It's a seizure medicine, so same type as Lyrica. My son actually just started on it, too. I am doing really well on it, and he is not having any side effects so far (I had really bad drowsiness/fatigue/dizziness when I first started it, but not anymore).
What were you taking the Lyrica for?

Ok girls I'll warn you - my life over the past 4-6 years (since kidlets were born!), has been so focused on dietary interventions that I can get a little carried away when I talk about it!! (I have friends that have eyes that glaze over when I start LOL)

Both my girls and I suffer heaps of food allergies (I have 17 allergens! The list includes: wheat, dairy, soy, rice, corn, egg, goat milk, sheep milk, almond, chilli, cocoa, and some others that I can't even remember right now LOL), I have hypoglycaemia and also low blood pressure, we are all intolerant of fructose, as well as fairly sensitive to natural chemicals found in foods - such as salycilates, amines and glutamates. Earlier this year we completed a 2 year biomedical intervention program that focussed on avoiding our allergens, ensuring we were on the right doses of supplementation due to our limited diets, and also helping with just general other issues. It was an amazing learning experience, (overwhelming so at times!), but the results have been worth it.

So, the main things I've focused on for my own issues are lots of protein (meat at 2 meals per day), lots of quinoa grain and flour - its very high in protein as well as being low gi, we use chickpea flour as our main flour though, 6 meals a day - protein at every single meal & snack. We've had to focus on meats as complete proteins because we can't eat the other animal sources and to combine proteins to ensure we get enough protein, we just physically couldn't eat as much as we'd need. Protein is vital to helping recover from allergies. I've also had to ensure that I have a caffeinated drink (tea) as soon as I wake up and again around 3pm, to help boost my blood pressure, as well as ensuring I have an adequate salt intake - these two things seem to keep the BP under control. Of course, every meal is low gi and if we do eat something high in gi it must be with something low gi at the same time.

Fruits & Veg don't feature highly purely because between the fructose content, and the natural chemicals, there are very few that are easily tolerated by us all.

Interestingly, I've recently discovered that hypoglycaemia can be worsened by fructose intolerance - I can attest to this as I had my worst ever hypo after eating some apple pie! (Apple is very high in fructose).

But, I'm still waiting on a few tests at the moment because the hypoglycaemia has been a bit out of whack at the moment - so it will be interesting to see what comes of that. I must admit, I haven't cut sugar (regular sucrose that is) out entirely yet, but I know I'm better without it - I am just reluctant as I KNOW I'm addicted LOL I strongly suspect it will be suggested to me at my next appt though.

As for the chemical side of things... BM I don't know if there is any specific test my friends had (I only got to know them after they were diagnosed and here in Aus, if you mention MCS to certain medical professionals you are lumped into the "nutjob" group and ignored). But, its become very evident in their lives when they avoid things, and then have exposures.

Both my girls are also chemically sensitive (both the foods as above, and other chems), and something as simple as being in a room where fly spray has been used, can invoke a nasty reaction - behavioural, constipation, headaches, skin etc. Chlorinated pools are no go, fragranced deodorant and personal care products cannot be used in my house etc.

I don't know if you guys have heard of the "Failsafe Diet" - its quite big here and I know a few US followers, but its very good at helping to work out food chemical intolerances.

Lately, I have been introducing some of my allergens, and I'm now doing ok (after a very strict 2 year abstinence) with some of them - hello cocoa and chilli LOL, but whenever I eat dairy and wheat I can guarantee i will react... the difference now is that I can easily spot the reaction and I now indulge knowing full well there will be consequences!

I could write for days on this, but I wont bore you all to tears LOL But feel free to ask me anything you like about our lives with so so many food issues and chemical sensitivity!

Chewy, what meds are you on for your fibro? I was diagnosed 5 yrs ago and have tried several- I still believe Lyrica was resposible for my becoming disabled. Theresa, who gave your friends the test for the chemical sensitivity? I would very much appreciate any links....as well as any other ladies who could contribute any, or any ideas....

Thanks Sara- we are also avoiding dried fruit and carrots- too much sugar. I try to really limit the artificial sweeteners because I just don't like them, but it has made things so much easier if I have something sweet that I *can* have once in a while. This diet is much more extreme than most hypoglycemic diets that you see, but since it was an endocrinologist that came up with it I think he has a much better handle on how our body processes things- which is important because in Fibromyalgia things in our body tend not to work the way they are supposed to.

Khris - when I struggled with hypoglycemia long ago, I also avoided artificial sweeteners (is Splenda considered one?) too, as I really needed to re-educate my taste buds to be happy with natural sweetness (i.e. carrot). I would resort to some raisins when I needed a sweet fix.

If you don't have peanut issues, I also found a spoonful of peanut butter (the refrigerated unsweetened, natural kind) really hit the spot and sustained me.

If there are no wheat/gluten issues, truly whole grains don't raise the glycemic index like other carbs do, but these are serious whole grains NOT 'Whole Wheat' or 'Whole Grain' things from the regular bakers (Sara Lee, Taystee, etc.).

You do a lot of research and probably already know all this, but I thought I'd throw it out there just in case you haven't run across some of this yet. . .

Refugee and Yublocka- I'm glad you're feeling a bit better.
LoP I hope your weekend improves upon the week!
Sara, Theresa and Rute- thanks for the support.

Theresa- mine didn't show up in tests, just symptoms. One of the books that I read about Fibromyalgia said that it's common to have both, and that even if the tests didn't show it that if you have symptoms you should treat it through diet. It made sense to me, so I decided to try it. My son is actually starting the diet, too. I'm curious to hear what they have you eating Theresa. We have cut out sugar completely (no honey, fructose, sugcorse, etc- but we can have Splenda), limited fruit (no bananas grapes or juice), up to three slices of sugar free bread a day, limited amounts of whole grain starches (no potatos, corn, barley, white flour) and lots of meats, hard cheeses and vegetables. No caffeine, either.

When you know for sure, then you can be just as sure that you need to take proper care, and yoga is so wonderful for all the aches and pains, etc. I have NEVER regretted doing a yoga class.

Oh Khris I just wanted to say I'm so glad you are feeling better. I have friends with fibro and it really has been quite debilitating at times. I don't know if you are similar, but 2 of my friends have found they actually have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity which is really the cause of most of their fibro... so eliminating every single (or as many as physically possible) source of inhaled or absorbed chemicals in their life has given a dramatic improvement. (Of course, ignore all of this if you already know about the link here, or if you know its not relevant to you!!)

I too have hypoglycaemia so I'm keen to hear how you go with your new diet plan. I'm just waiting on yet another round of test results before we work out if my diet needs more tweaking or not.

But its great to hear that you are enjoying yourself more!!

Let's hear an update on everyone who has been struggling.
I am feeling *so* much better these days. I still have bad days and good days, but on the whole even the bad days are better than they were before I got my diagnosis of Fibromyalgia. The medication is working well, I have gotten a new sitter who watches the kids while I do Yoga at the gym three mornings a week, and I found out that on top of my Fibro I have Hypoglycemia and I have radically changed my diet. The weather has cooled down enough to layer (or at least wear real clothes), and I am actually having fun with fashion again!
