Thanks everyone. I suppose the silver lining might be that I go and get another pedicure to fix up the mess. I'm not good at doing my own nails, but I will try your solution first Manidipa. If that doesn't work, then I'll go to the place I was going to last summer and get at least the polish re-done. I suppose I could ask for the fancy massage/foot rub stuff too. Just won't need the filing and so on, which is good - because like Kari, my feet are kind of ticklish!

And although I'll be returning most of what I bought at the Rack yesterday, the silver lining in that one is that some of the stuff I bought yesterday is loose, and one item is too big.

So, it's not all bad. Just had to laugh at my attempts to pretty myself up.

No hugs here. I felt as reading the story that you already saw the humor of it.

I have had those days too. The last haircut like that was so bad I was in a total tizzy. I went to a local shop and found the hairdresser I have been using ever since. She is not overly friendly but does great precision cuts and is very good at interpreting and advising so some good came from the horrible haircut that was everything I asked for it not to be.

I can also sympathize on the weight front. I have been battling the 15 lbs I gained over the winter for two months and have not been winning. Today I was down a pound. Yay. Perhaps the fact that it is taking soooooo long will help me keep it off when I finally succeed.

See, if you try hard enough you can often find a silver lining.

Arggh! Sounds like it's time for a nice bubbly bath and a book, shutting the giggly guys OUT of your bedroom. Some wine with that? They do say it's good for your heart!

Hang in there, VC. It's just one of those Comedy of Errors days, and at least your sense of humour sounds like it's quite undented.

Wishing you a FAB week ahead to compensate. (Meanwhile, try gently feathering over the smudge with polish remover to smooth it. After smoothing with nail file if it's too wrinkly.)

You made me laugh and laugh Kari! That's what it was like for me today. The dreaded foam thong things. Wrong shoes, car parked somewhere in la la land. Hot. It's late - I don't have dinner sorted. Should have been home by about 5, and it's now 5:30 and I'm hobbling around in these stupid foam things...when one of them fell apart.

And like you experienced, I have a mucked up pedicure (just one nail got smudged and wrecked)...so much for all that effort.

Tomorrow will be better....I *will* get a nice haircut. Somehow!

Oh, gosh, I hate days like that. I wish I could give you a hug. You are not a disaster - and I'm crossing my fingers hoping that the new salon can help you find a manageable way to rework the cut that hadn't turned out the way you had hoped.

Your pedicure experience reminds me of my own. The preface to the story: I hardly ever paint my toenails, had never had a pedicure, and I have incredibly, painfully sensitive/ticklish feet. Can't *stand* other people touching them! But at the wedding where I was a bridesmaid a few years ago, the groom's mom kindly treated the bridal party to pedicures so I thought I'd give it a try.

The pedicures were booked the day before the wedding at a large mall that I'm not familiar with - about 45 minutes away from home and halfway between home and the wedding location, so I could drive down there afterwards.

Problem #1: The shoe issue. I wore flat gladiator sandals but they came too far over my toes to wear, so I got the flimsy foam flip flops that you mentioned.
Problem #2: I'm not familiar with the mall, and the parking lot had no landmarks (numbers) to remind myself where I'd parked - just ridiculously long rows. And I have a bad sense of direction anyway - I get lost quite easily.
Problem #3: It was an unusually hot (for Seattle) summer day.
Problem #4: My appointment was the last scheduled of the bridal party, so I was already pushing it to be on time at our lunch following the pedicures.

The pedicurist was nice but the appointment was excruciating - it was like an hour of being slowly tortured by tickling! I don't think I'll ever do it again.

So, following my pedicure, I shuffle into the flimsy flip flops and head out of the mall... and I can't find my car *anywhere.* It escalated to the point where I was walking up and down each long row pressing the "lock" button on my keypad, hoping my car would beep at me. After 10 minutes I was starting to wonder if my car had possibly been stolen! Then, the flip flops ripped in half and I was basically only wearing the part that covered the ball of my foot, trying to walk on my tiptoes, on hot asphalt. I finally found the darn car but by then I was late, and had already wrecked the pedicure on my pinkie toes, which curl under, since I'd had to walk around on my toes. I finally made it to the lunch, driving barefoot, but my pedicure hadn't had enough time to dry before I had to put my shoes back on so it got kind of mashed.

It was kind of a frazzled day. Fortunately the actual wedding day went quite smoothly!

Sounds like the story of my life.

Bad haircut . . . .check

people laughing . . . . check

wearing sandals and someone saying "OMG you're naked!" because both my arms and feet were showing . . . . check

I recently went on a "date" wearing really scary old mom jeans because I was at an appointment and then went to volunteer and got dirty in my only decent jeans and only made time to wash the pair three times this past week instead of the four they needed. It was cold, I needed jeans. He commented . . . I suggested I'd wear my sweats or cancel next time.

I feel you! I was in a horrible rut for a really long time and some days it seems like every time I put out effort to stop the hemorrhaging into "scary" land it turns into a 3 ring circus.

Well I have ended up owning tons of flip flops due to similar nail polish/pedi outings so I hear you on that one!
Me thinks you may be a bit too hard on yourself? Give yourself some true TLC and these bad days can be behind you. I love that you have kept your humor intact and we've all been in similar funks (for lack of better word) so this is the place to get out of it.

Thanks everyone! Don't worry, now that I'm actually trying to do something about my not-so-fab-funk, it's all kind of funny, don't you think? I'm not in tears or anything like that - still feeling kind of yucky about myself, but had to share a laugh at my feeble and almost futile attempts to get out of it.

I'll keep two tops from Nordstrom Rack - one is a turquoise/mightnight blue colour-blocked top and another is one of those cotton open-weave type sweaters. Everything else is going back. That's what you get for not wanting to even try stuff on!

Gain some weight, and battle those pounds for two months straight AND get a bad hair cut? It's enough to make any woman feel a bit less-than-fab. Meanwhile, I think the past couple of days of me saying, "enough is enough" and sort of struggling to pull myself up by the bootstraps are kind of funny - I mean, who else ends up hobbling out of a nail salon wearing those silly foam thong things because she didn't think to bring the right shoes?

Me!

Oh you poor dear! I think we can all relate at some level. I hope it helped you to write it all down; you're such a good writer!

My poor hubs never knows when I'll laugh along with him (at my fashion antics) or when his good-natured kidding will bring me to tears. At least he thinks you're cute! And at least the good looking guy *noticed* you! They always see you when you're not done up don't they? That's what my daughter says anyway. I can't even remember!

I hope at least some of your Rack finds work out. And I grieve with you over your bad (or at least not what you wanted) hair cut. As much as we tell ourselves that it will grow, nothing takes away the sting of passing the mirror that first week or two. I hope your fab new stylist gives you something more wonderful than you can imagine! And good job keeping your weight stable during a time like this. That's no small feat! I hope tomorrow is a much better day for you Velvety.

Just for the record, I am now laughing at these shenanigans myself. It's all just a wee bit ridiculous.

Just for a laugh, I thought I'd share the goings-on around here lately...

For the past couple of months, I've been battling a few extra pounds and this has made me feel kind of awful. In the meantime, I went off and got my hair cut at a new salon at the end of March, and let's just say it was a total disaster. Layers where I didn't want layers, and overly long bangs.

Frump city. Frustrated, frumpy and really kind of bummed out about it all.

Got the diet sort of in control. Just barely. Skin of the teeth describes it well.

Need a pedicure, need new clothes, need new summer sandals. Spied some fancy 'foot friendly' sandals on sale at 6pm dot com - Danskos. But, I don't like Danskos. Too clunky, too frumpy, too...something.

Remembered that I'd bought some Dansko sandals last summer at Nordstrom Rack ...pulled them out, put them on, because I needed to know what size I am in these shoes. Am I the only one who is a different size in umpteen different brands?

Unfortunately, the jeans I was wearing were a wee bit too long, so I rolled them up so I could see how these Dansko sandals (never worn) from last summer fit on my feet, before I considered ordering something from 6pm. Meanwhile, my hair is a complete disaster. It's hot ...

I throw my hair up into something of a topknot. Complete with a totally tacky red *velour* scrunchie. Yes, I said red. I said velour and I said scrunchie. So here's me - rolled up flared jeans, clunky and semi-ugly Dansko sandals, hair in a top-knot, secured with a dreaded Srunchie of all things.

Husband comes home...

Starts laughing at me. Says he never sees me like this, but thinks I look really cute. He's laughing so hard he has tears in his eyes. Gee...thanks.

Fast forward to today. I'm way, way overdue for a pedicure. I also need some summer clothes, and some decent summer shoes and sandals. I also need to get my butchered hair cut fixed.

Phone the most expensive hair salon in town, book appt. for tomorrow afternoon. On a roll, I feel like I should "do something" about by not-so-fabness today - so I take off to Nordstrom Rack, in search of shorts, sandals, and maybe I'll hit the nail place in the same strip mall where the Rack is. Buy a whole bunch of stuff at the Rack without trying on. Throw it all in the trunk. Casually meander past the nail place, see if it's busy.

It's not too busy.

I venture in.

Forget that I hadn't worn the 'right' shoes for a pedicure. But I'm so grateful to just get the toenails done that I don't care. Shove Ecco pumps into my purse - yes, I said I shoved my shoes into my purse. Get the treatment. Hot wax, fancy massage, sea-salt rub and all of that. Went for a coral colour.

But ack! I don't have the right shoes to walk out of there. So they put these stupid paper-thin foam thongs on my feet. I sit there for what seems like an eternity and then wandered out, my overly-long flared jeans rolled up almost to my knees and wearing a pair of powder pink foam thong sandals. I've only walked a few steps out of the place, and all of of a sudden, the most gorgeous looking guy walks up next to me, and he's laughing ...laughing almost as hard as my husband had laughed the night before.

I don't know why I bothered (maybe because he was laughing so much), but I did say, "I just didn't have the right shoes for this" to him as he walked past me. He said something about me looking "cute." My face turns red. Really red. Felt like I'd gotten a sunburn.

Thing is? As soon as he walked past me, the paper-thin pink thong thing on my left foot decided to come apart. My car's way on the other side of the parking lot.

Meanwhile, it occurs to me that there's a Payless shoe place just two doors down. I hobble on over...buy some thongs (I hate thong sandals)...waited impatiently at the cash..."Just get me out of here, I want to go home" ....

Buy the thong sandals, put them on, and end up smudging/totally ruining the polish on my left foot. Because of some ugly thong sandals ....arrgghh!!! But I had to get to my car somehow, right?

Race on home - it's late, and I don't have the fish thawing yet. Pull into the driveway...dog's wagging, walk into the house...

And my husband is *still* laughing at me.

I tried! I paid $13 for a pair of thongs that I will never wear again just to get me from the mall to my car. Came home with $250 worth of stuff from Nordstrom Rack that I didn't even try on. Have an appt. tomorrow at better hair salon ....

Really hoping that tomorrow isn't a disaster. I will get the polish fixed and return the things I bought from the Rack that didn't work out. I will pull myself, kicking and screaming (and more than a little embarrassed) out of this 'not-so-fab' funk that I've been in.

Wish me luck???
